A clear, sunny day, people going about their normal lives. Cheerful, unaware. Worshipping at the temple, selling goods, working hard. Then, a shadow passes overhead, gone by the time anyone looks up. The sound of marching boots approaching, the rumble of an army driven for conquest. And then, everything goes silent, deadly still. Then, the roar of a great beast thunders across the land. A torrent of flame sweeps down upon the people, and the armies of these great beasts charge forth to reclaim what is theirs. The dragons have awoken, and they are ready for war.
Hello all,
My name is Raccoon_Master, also known as Raccoon, and I am excited to announce I am starting to recruit players for the playtest of an epic campaign using the 2024 rules that I am designing known as Chromatic Conquest. Maybe it will end up on DMsguild one day, maybe I’ll publish it, who knows? Whatever the case may be, I am seeking brave heroes to venture forth and stop the draconic armies that threaten the land, and win the war before all is lost. Now, I am not at the stage where I can just run the whole game through with a playtest group, but I am looking to playtest small sections of the adventure, such as singular quests or levels.
If you are chosen for the group, you will have the chance to build a relatively balanced group of characters (both in party dynamics and in mechanical effectiveness) to see how the game runs. Keep in mind, this has never been playtested before, and I will ask feedback at the end of each section to get to know your thoughts. If you are interested, read the “Group Expectations” and “How to Apply” sections, which should tell you everything you need to know. With all that out of the way, let’s dig into some of the details.
Group Expectations and Information:
I am looking for a group of roughly five players who like a balance of combat, social interaction, and exploration. The main goal is bonding and fun. I am looking for thoughtful and skilled players experienced with roleplay and the game itself.
The tone of the game is very action and story-oriented, with an epic feel. In this story, you are heroes, or at least powerful but morally gray protagonists. You may face some hard decisions, and the truth and reality of the war itself is most assuredly a catalyst for character change, whether that be negative or positive.
Posting expectations are once every 48 hours while we are actively play-testing a segment of the campaign, but I require you check the thread at least once every 24 hours to keep yourself updated. If something comes up, let me know and I will give you an extension on that 48 hour limit, depending on how much time you need.
No T.R.A.S.H (Transphobia, Racism, Ableism/Ageism, Sexism, or Homophobia). Period. If this comes up, I will take those players involved into a PM, and we can talk it out peacefully like adults. Be willing to accept responsibility and both forgive and apologize.
The game will be around PG-13, since to be on this site you are supposed to be over the age of thirteen. Nothing gory or sexually explicit, but considering the story is about war and vengeance, players may have to face some themes that would be uncomfortable for a kid to deal with. We will be using X’s cards, session zeroes, all that (I’ll provide info and such when the group is getting started).
NOTE: I may elect to run multiple groups, depending on how many there are, as well as the enthusiasm and quality of the applications. You may run through some of the same stuff, some different stuff, we’ll have to see. Most likely I'll have a mechanics group where I playtest monsters and a story group where I playtest the actual story and adventure.
How to Apply:
Unlike many PBP’s, we will not be making characters for applications. Once the group is decided, we will make a balanced party so that way all manner of characters can challenge the adventure (if I only ever play-tested with a party full of barbarians, that wouldn’t be a very good adventure, would it?). Instead, provide the following information:
About yourself: Who you are, preferred pronouns, experience with tabletop, preferred play-style,
Story prompts: Write a one paragraph story for two of the prompts of your choice presented below. For simplicity's sake, write from the perspective of a fantasy, heroified version of yourself, the point of the prompts is to see how you write and tell stories, not to showcase a certain character concept.
Your beloved lies dying in your arms, slain by the forces of the dragon army. How do you respond? Do you pray for their spirit? Do you swear vengeance? Or does your grief simply overwhelm you?
You have stumbled upon a dragon hatchery filled with baby dragons. They’re so cute and innocent, but you know that if you let them live, they could grow to be horrible monsters. What do you do when faced with this dilemma? Is your prerogative to play with the cute little critters, or is it to advocate for or against their slaughter?
Finally, you’ve made it. You fought long and hard, and lost many along the way, but your final challenge is before you, and it’s time to end this. How do you inspire your companions in the face of death? Do you deliver a rousing speech, cast one last blessing spell on the group, or do you simply prepare yourself, ready to defend your allies when the time comes?
The battle has been hard, but its almost done. You are sole member of your party standing, and the boss looms over you. What does your final attack look like, and what consequences does it have for you, the rest of the party, or even the world?
Themes: What themes and tone would you like to explore? Do you want a game that involves learning hard moral lessons, or are you just here for the ride? It’s meant to provide a little something for everyone. And the point of the playtest is to make it balanced and fun, so whatever you want, I’m sure we can find a way to incorporate it.
Recruitment ends August 16th, and I'll choose players then. If you have any questions, let me know!
And with that, let the war begin!

Hi, UK based, He/Him. I'm possibly a little older than many, I cut my teeth on 3.5 but then stopped for a while. I've been playing 5E for a couple of years now, some PBP and some live. My live play is all DM now so it would be nice to be a player for a change (the group I DM for are my daughters and their partners, some of who are playing for the first time). As for playstyle, I'm happy with most things - combat, social or exploration. I can do the strong silent type, or the one who never stops asking questions.
About yourself: Who you are, preferred pronouns, experience with tabletop, preferred play-style,
My gaming identity is Harknail (use this on all gaming sites), any pronouns are fine. I'm old in years, but still a kid at heart.
I've been playing D&D since before AD&D was released. I've played every version since, some more than others. I've also played a variety of other fantasy games, as well as Science Fiction and Superhero games. I've been playing play by post games for well over a decade now. I check for new posts a few times a day. I used to have 2 nights a week for in person games, but since covid all my gaming is online. I'm currently running a couple of real time online games (D&D 5e and Hero System Champions 6e).
Story Prompts:
The battle has been hard, but its almost done. You are sole member of your party standing, and the boss looms over you. What does your final attack look like, and what consequences does it have for you, the rest of the party, or even the world?
Mika, Flint, Rico, they're all dead or nearly so. It's just me left, and to tell the truth, I'm not going to last long either, even if the big bad in front of me suddenly dropped dead from his accumulated wounds. I have to bet it all in one desperate move while I can still move. It's all or nothing, no chance to try again, and even if it works, no chance to survive. But it's the best chance to finish this...
I charge the big bad, but instead of retreating from his spear thrust, I take it in my belly, and keep charging forward, the shaft of the spear sliding though my guts, locking his spear in pace so he can't parry when I stab him though the heart. As the world starts to go dark, my hand slipping from my sword still lodged in the big bad's chest, my last though is wondering if it worked, or if the big bad had someway to survive a sword in his chest. I guess I'll never know...

It’s meant to provide a little something for everyone. And the point of the playtest is to make it balanced and fun, so whatever you want, I’m sure we can find a way to incorporate it.
Mostly here for the ride. Like combat, mixed on puzzles, not good with political intrigue, love slice of life roleplaying. OK with hard choices, when warned in advance (so I can make an appropriate character). The choices may not be optimal... For example some of my characters would kill baby dragons without a second thought, others would try to raise them to be good dragons.
I'm looking forward to making a balanced group, where the characters are made to complement each other, covering each other's weak spots.
About yourself: Who you are, preferred pronouns, experience with tabletop, preferred play-style,
He/Him. Full grown adult many years out of college and a family of my own. Got into DnD fairly recently (about 1.5 years ago) but got obsessed pretty quickly. Went straight to homebrewing entire worlds for my friends where I am the DM. Because of this my knowledge of official DnD worlds is limited. My preferred playstyle is in person, then live virtual, then pbp. However with my kids, my free time is measured in seconds not hours so pbp is like 95% of how I play dnd. I’m usually very responsive and will post multiple times a day. (Located in US - EST)
Story prompts:
Your beloved lies dying in your arms…
The air stank of smoke and fire, the air so hot it burned my lungs with each sob. This pain however, was nothing… nothing at all compared to the sharp jolts in my heart. I cradled my sweet Fortuna’s head in my lap, her blood warm against my hands. I whispered a prayer to any god that might be listening, but not for her life… that was beyond even their ability now, but for her spirit to find the peace it so deserved. I pressed my forehead to hers and swore, in every language I knew, that I would burn every dragon a thousand times more than they had to her. When I rose, sword in hand, my grief had become a blade sharper than steel.
Finally, you’ve made it...
The portal loomed ahead, nothing but a swirling mix of colors could be seen, yet we hesitated and trembled as another monstrous roar could be heard from the other side. My companions look to me, their armor dented, eyes shadowed with loss. I raise my staff high into the air so the amulet with our company’s sigil could be seen and let my voice cut through the clamor: “We’ve fought, we’ve bled, and we’ve buried friends—but we are still here. Today, we end this. Our losses brought us to this point of no return. Tonight we repay every drop of pain, agony, and suffering they have caused us. Tonight, Hell itself will fear us!”
Themes:
I like a healthy mix of combat and opportunities for roleplaying. Having an adventure with meaningful choices that actually have an impact and not just a “no matter what you say or do, you end up at the same point”. I like real risks and not being surrounded by plot armor. Riddles and Puzzles are awesome, but only if the clues aren’t ridiculously obscure or from something a month ago (in real world time). I am not a fan of dealing with politics (in game or out), it always just seems to be full of bigotry and condescension.
About me: I'm a cis male ally he/him, been playing D&D for 28 years now. I'm a forever DM but I come here to do PBP to experience playing at other peoples' tables.
I'm not sure if you wanted to stories with a single prompt or one story across two prompts, so you get 3.
1st prompt: "Danni no! No! This can't be the way this ends" *He sobs, the sob of a heart that can't find its dance partner. Lost, scared, cold, he looks up. Taking the pendant he gave them those years ago and trying it to the pommel of his sword. He allows himself a moment, but there is still work to be done* "We keep going... Together. I'll see you on the other side my love." *He says as he rises from the floor, a new resolve, a renewed fire, ready to bring a new dawn*
2nd prompt: *He clutches the small group of dragonlings in his arm, presenting them to the gathered group.* "It's not our place to end such young life. We know they can become monsters of legend, but do we not believe in nurture? Is it that far fetched to hope of a world where the dragons and us are bound in mutual respect and harmony?"
3rd and 4th together: *He stood, bloodied, nearly beaten, their party lying strewn about on the cliff side as the beast's head loomed menacingly.* "Pitiful" *He heard it say, staring down at the broken blade in his hands, but there he caught the glimpse of Danni's locket, the symbol of their love. He chuckles, a moment rings clear in his mind and he begins to sing* "The rain can fall, the sun may shine, it matters not when there's friends and wine" *The simple pub song they all sang after their first victory. The rest of the party begins to join in, they stagger to their feat. He takes the sword and as he reaches the chorus he leaps! Flying into the dragons maw with a heavenly fire. Come victory or death it all ends today, no glory, no game, just purpose. One final blow, winner take all.* "I'm coming Danni" *He whispers as everything goes black...*
Okay themes: I like humanity in the face of adversity themes. Survival+romance, war+friendship. Finding the calm in the chaos. I have nearly no triggers outside of the TRASH as you called it so I'm DFW
“Why? Why kill them? What crime have they committed, apart from being born?” He looked at the others, standing between them and the newborns. “You say all chromatics are evil, and a threat, or is that just your prejudice showing? You can’t know what they will become.” As the others moved a little closer he carried on “You claimed that all Drow were evil, yet Jysnill stands among you, and you call him friend, put your prejudice aside and think!”
“So, here we are, the end is nigh” you think as you look around. You take in the faces around you, the small group of strangers who have now become your friends, allies and maybe a kind of family. Orym the trickster, always causing mayhem; Aired, the quiet one, with his thousand yard stare, seeing something you don’t; Glorandal who’s the opposite and never shuts up; and Adamar, your leader, in his shining armour that never dulls. You all take a few moments rest, checking your equipment, making sure it’s ready. Adamar speaks, his voice solid “So, are you bunch of oddballs ready?” Several replies are shouted, mostly profane; all except Aired who just loosens his blade in its scabbard and stares at something only he sees.
Themes:
Anything goes. Combat is good although I prefer it to have meaning rather than just hack & slash. Exploring new places and meeting new folks, trying to figure out who's trustworthy, and who isn't. Moral dilemmas, a bit of intrigue, not always winning - it's all good!
About yourself: Age- lets just say I remember a time when TV didn't come in colour. Pronouns- Traditionally he/they.....these days occasionally she/they but honestly any will do. Been playing RPGs since I was approx 10......so that's over four and a half decades at this point. Though D&D only for the last 10 years or so....I play TTRPGs for the story, interaction and the ability to live in someone elses skin for a spell.
Story prompts:
Mandawuy stared at the crimson stained grass upon which Daku's crushed body lay, he could not bring himself to lift his eyes to the ruin that had once been his husbands careworn visage. He pitched down onto the earth digging his fingers into the ground as a strangled cry left his body before he caught himself and drew a loud ragged singular breath. After several minutes he raised his head and looked out across the tableau of devastation, he was not alone in loss today, there were others out there among the ruins and burning homes some of which might still draw breath. H e reached down and, with gritted teeth and focused eyes pried the wedding ring off of his husbands hand and tucked it away next to his heart. He had only to follow the sound of wailing to know where he was needed. Don't waste time feeling sorry for yourself, there's those who don't have that time to spare.....that's what Daku had told him when they'd lost Kimber, and again when the Black Watch fell....and so here he was, not wasting time. He dug a knuckle in to the corner of his eye and straightened himself, a woman weeping....below the border wall and behind the mill...he looked back for a moment at Daku then moved at pace towards the sounds of crying....
Abet stared at Dewi in disbelief, " You cannot be serious? These vermin must be eradicated......or are you offering to be their wet-nurse and governess?" He shook his head and glowered at the half dozen or so small-scaled forms, " Fine, they've done nothing wrong....yet. But we both know how utterly lethal they are at even a few weeks of age.....or do you not recall all those that we have lost a long the way?" " Sorry, sorry...that was unkind.......but perhaps unkindness is what we must practice here. No one has the resources left to hold that many wyrmlings captive for any length of time and certainly not once they reach a month or so of age.....I agree with you. And innocence should be a protection against violence but we have both seen time and time again that that is simply not the case." " No, stay here...there's no need for you to see this....this.....necessary work.....no need for you to live with it....I will carry it. As we carry so much else."
Themes: Hard mortal lessons are good, as is forming social bonds and moments of levity. Combat/Social/Exploration.....I'm not so good with the puzzles but I'll give it a go.
