In their absence, humanity clawed its way forward. Magic became a distant memory—rare and untamable. But where divine power failed, mortal ingenuity thrived. From the ashes of the old world rose magitek: complex machinery that harnessed the dregs of magic left over from creation itself, bending reality through gears and equations rather than prayer and sacrifice.
For a time, it seemed humanity had won. Disease retreated. Hunger faded. The great cities gleamed with brass and light
But something is wrong.
A rot spreads through Argos, invisible yet inescapable. Shadows gather in forgotten places. Old hatreds flare like wildfire. Nations that stood as allies for generations now eye each other with suspicion. In the halls of power, politicians trade insults that edge toward declarations of war. Even families fracture—brother against sister, parent against child.
No one can say when it started. No one knows why.
But everyone feels it: a pressure building behind the eyes, a voice whispering in the dark corners of the mind, urging anger, demanding blood.
The world teeters on the edge of something terrible. And in the Isles of Icama—hidden in the eye of the eternal Maelstrom, untouched by the outside world for over seven hundred years—no one knows the storm is coming.
Howdy y'all! Been a while since I've posted on here, but I'm looking to start up a PbP campaign in a homebrew setting I've been working on for a while. I personally think DnD is a great way to really dive into roleplay and storytelling, and I see PbP more as collaborative storytelling instead of just a bunch of number crunching. As such, I'm looking for some similar-minded folk. If you're looking to tell a story and have meaningful roleplay moments, this is the campaign for you!
This campaign starts in an archipelago nestled within the eye of a mysterious and ancient hurricane hundreds of years after a ragtag crew managed to sail into the center of the storm. The archipelago is teeming with magic and wonder--from glowing fungal forests to sentient dolphins and jungles filled with bloodthirsty plants--the Isles of Icama have it all. Though despite the peaceful and idyllic life of the Isles, unknownst to the islanders is that the world outside is descending into chaos. Eventually, after some peaceful and slice-of-life stuff on the islands, the characters will eventually get caught up in the events of the outside world, the campaign acquiring a more gritty, catastrophic tone.
As for my playing/writing style, I love making my players' backstories the driving force of the campaign. While I do have the scaffolding of plot to nudge things along when needed, you as the players are going to drive the story forward. As such, I'm looking for folk who are proactive rather than reactive when it comes to posting and playing style. The more you give me, the more I have to work with.
In addition, while you don't necessarily have to be a masterful writer with an incredible vocabulary and outstanding prose, you should definitely put some effort your posts. While that doesn't necessarily mean your posts should be paragraphs upon paragraphs long, it should be better than,
"Joe drinks the wine. He's unsure, but likes it anyways."
You could make that so much better with only a few more seconds of effort, like,
"Joe takes the proffered cup of wine with a hesitant hand, distrustfully eyeing the man who offered it to him. He swirls the glass and sniffs the dark liquid within, the heady aroma assaulting his nostrils. Cautiously, he raises it to his lips and takes a sip, and he's pleasantly surprised that the wine has a rather pleasant flavor."
Doesn't that tell a much better story?
Anyways, I'll post a link to the lore document of the campaign below. There's a lot, so I don't expect you to read all of it unless you really want to, though I do require you to read everything from page 68 on since that contains all the lore specific to the Isles where the campaign starts. I also recommend reading through Religion and Magic section as well, though that's a lot of reading. I'm still working on filling out the other sections of world lore, but feel free to read through the rest and give some feedback if you'd like!
In addition, the game will be on Discord, and while the game will be asynchronous, I expect at least one quality post per day. If we all have similar time zones, we could try sneaking in a live text session sometime in during the week. I find they're very helpful in preventing PbP burnout and loss of interest that's so common with this hobby. We'll be using Avrae and Tupper, though experience with those apps isn't necessarily required.
If you're still interested, feel free to leave an application below! Instead of me giving you a form to fill out, feel free to write what you think would give you a chance to get into the campaign. You should include things like why you'd be a good fit, confirmation you've at least read the required lore section, any questions/suggestions about the world and its lore, and other stuff you think would be helpful. I'll try to answer questions and stuff, and I'll leave this open until I find enough good players to form a group. This definitely isn't first-come, first-serve, so feel free to take your time.
I'm pretty new to the pbp scene of dnd tbh(I'm not new new to dnd don't worry). Yet, I've found a liking for it as it gives a chance for me to say parts of roleplay that I wouldn't naturally in a worry of interrupting someone verbally(which I'm getting better at slowly) or embarrassment. I'm a self-taught writer so when I describe scenes or acts I feel the need to really nail down the acts of my characters, which might take up ten minutes before I'm satisfied with my description. Each character I make, I feel the need to make specific for each campaign I play or rework characters to fit nicely into the story of the campaign. As, to me, it isn't really about the combat or experiencing the story, it's about the way my character reacts with the world, the unfolding changes/story and their own members/friends.
So far from reading the lore(only required so far), I'm really interested in the isles and the idea of playing an overfriendly, excitable girl from Antuzula who loves everything with such earnest, a bit of a storyteller/performer and loves going with the flow of things, it sounds so fun. I have made some suggestions I would consider when expanding her lore as I love crafting my character's backstory(not too lengthy to be flexible usually) so I can see where I'm steering her character further. When I have time, I'll def. look over the full doc.
Questions:
- Do each island have their own communities?
- Are myths common among the people?
- Do the people of the isle venture off the island ever?
- What types of people live on certain islands? Or is it whatever so we can make our characters however we want without certain islands being linked to certain races?
I apologize if any of these suggestions are mentioned earlier as I've only read 68 - current and typing as I go.
- Conflicts between Wind and Water users/ different of praise (as I would presume that they are some people who oddly worship one over the other even if it is seem as odd or unruly)
- Bonus to stats based off of which island a player choose (like for Axtatla, one that native to the isle would have more dex. then one without so they have +2 to dex.)
- Roles underneath Tidecallers roles (like an assistant or disciple or such)
- Certain traditions for certain isles (Idk maybe it's because I like the idea of a dancing with nightlight infused clothes tradition/culture dance for Antuzula to hope the mold won't ever cause them illness but I think each area having their own unique tradition depending on the natural surroundings would be fun)
-Myths of the outside land
-Caretakers of certain areas (Axtua, Watchers area if there isn't one maybe people who plan a ceremony for them to hope they come more, Itki-Wal)
- Small bias/Stereotypes about other island people in certain islands (even if they are harmonious, I can still see a reality that each island community may have their own bias against others due to their own worries or common behavior from a certain island people take as fact)

The gods abandoned Argos long ago.

Not yet.

For me at least (?) the PDF link is just taking me to my own personal OneDrive.
Ah, tragic. I'll update the post with a different link and see if that works!
