By high sun on the second day, the adventurers have left the banks of the Mirar as they travel directly south through the Crags. The hills are steep and rocky, and trees are becoming less common as the party increases its distance from the river. As the five are winding their way through the hills, they spot two large human males standing atop a rocky prominence a few hundred feet ahead. Their long black hair, primitive garb, and spears make them easy to identify: Uthgardt barbarians. From this distance, however, it is not possible to determine from which tribe these individuals hail.
There's no doubt that the barbarians have spotted the five men on horseback, but, for now, they seem content to do nothing more than stand watch from their higher ground.
There are no trees in this area. The shrubs, on average, are between three and four feet tall. The contour lines on the hills represent a 10' increase in elevation. Initiative rolls are not necessary.
I pull up the reins on Irena and look at the barbarians in the distance. "I'll not assume they are friendly, or even speak much common. We can try to climb out of this valley but it won't be easy going for the horses." I scratch Pendergast on the chin as I think. "Approach to parley but expect to be robbed," I say at last. "Let's let Ladrian or Vigan do the talking."

Vigan
"One way to find out if they are friendly or not..."
The goliath gently encourages Nyx to trot forward (30ft south) and raises his hand in greeting and acknowledgement. He also scans the surrounding area for signs of additional Uthgardt.
As Nyx moves forward a short distance, Vigan can see that the two barbarians are exchanging words. The barbarians see the goliath'sraised hand, but they do nothing in response. Vigan neither spots nor hears anything else in the area.
Staying a little back from the goliath Andor moves up a little muttering a defensive charm under his breath. "Let's keep our fingers crossed there aren't a load more of them just out of sight."
Andor and Rixton coax their horses to move forward a bit; one of the barbarians (#2) abruptly turns around and disappears from view as he walks south and, apparently, down the backside of the hill. The one remaining barbarian stands, statue-like in the same place.

Rixton:
I pull up the reins behind Andor and Vigan and diamount. With my hand on the holy of my short sword, I walk up to Vigan, looking up at the towering Goliath. "What do they speak here? We should consider requesting or trading for passage."
I consider what I have read on this region, trying to answer my own question.
(Uthgardt barbarian tribes can be found throughout the North, and they have played a significant role in shaping some of the history and the culture of the region. With that in mind, I think it is reasonable to believe that all members of the party would know that the various barbarian tribes share a common language called Bothii. Additionally, some barbarians--not all--can speak and understand Common.)
"Well, common works for now," I say, headin back to my horse. I climb back onto the saddle and spur Irena forward. "Weapons at the ready, gents. This one is probably going pear-shaped."
Rixton:
I nod. "Vigan, Carrow, lead on."

The gray sky threatens snow but fails to follow through. The party's first day in the Crags passes without incident.
Ladrian
"I agree Vigan dear friend, let's continue then?" Ladrian says spurring his horse.
Continue south? F5, F6, F7 and F8? Or any other suggestions?
Yeah, let's cut straight south.

Ladrian
Spurring his horse he joins Rixton, Vigan and Andor
"Well this is interesting. Where did his friends went? Should we approach him or continue our way?"

Rixton:
"Well," I say. "Here is to hoping that they speak common."
I call out to the lone barbarian. "May we pass through your territory?"
The barbarian nods his head and waves his arm in such a way to indicate that the group should continue forward (south).

Andor
"What could possibly go wrong?" says the sorcerer with as straight a face as possible.

Vigan
Encouraging his horse forward to follow Rixton on his, Vigan replies to Andor "Well, we could let Rixton do all the talking, for a start."
