My b, I’ve got the animals in my wheel house but I didn’t realize these things we fought were animals.
I didn't think it would work on the basilisk, which is a Monstrosity.
I was hoping there were other animals around, the kind we don't fight, to provide the party with information without using our own eyes and ears. Like Tarzan or Beastmaster consulting the local wildlife.
If losing a spell slot is the cost to resolve this situation without fighting the basilisk, I'm fine with this being a one-time strategy. (Future basilisks would be more Monstrous, less Animal-ish.)
Let me know what Beegred should say. I'm guessing information about a safe path away from this place, and letting the basilisk know that many unpleasant predators (gnomes) are moving into the area.

If it was in combat, I might have switched my mind and retconned. But out of combat like this, I will just go with it? As long as you're all not going to lynch me for this one deviation from RAW. :P
And before anyone asks, yes I let it go for Beegred, so I will let it go for other spells too. But if resorting to violence, then this no longer applies.
Just to clarify (and make my daily post), if Orubis wants to solve this problem by trying to enchant the creature, I will allow it to be considered an animal at this point in time.
Beegred is correct that leaving the creatures here risks petrifying the gnomes when they come later. The creature situation is something that needs to be resolved.
However, the circle was nothing but a tool. The tool is broken now, but it doesn't remove the power of the cave. It just means the gnomes will have to do a little bit more work in their summoning.
What do you want to summon? The cavern is not a mechanical 'machine' that poops out elementals. It's a place suffused with godly 'residue' that produces stronger elementals when a caster summons one with their own spells, at that location.
You were tasked with finding the place. Not coming back with an army of elementals.
If the basilisk is well away from this area, are there more places we should check to make sure it is safe for the gnomes? Or do we feel confident there are no extreme dangers in hiding?

There's another adjacent cavern nearby and the basilisk is near enough to be able to hear it. Orubis moved into the next cavern to get within 30 feet of it to cast his channel divinity: charm animals, and Beegred is communicating with it without line of sight, from the cavern with the summoning circle.
I would say you have not been able to investigate the surroundings enough to determine it is safe because the Basilisk is just next door.

Rodolfo pulls out his wand of viscid globs, "This should help to keep it from cooling too fast. I might be able to keep it warm as well with prestidigitation."
He looks at others, "If you are OK with this?"
(the plan is to shoot a glob at the egg and then keep warming it with the cantrip)
Rodolfo, I don't understand what you intend to achieve with the glob?
The glob is big enough to capture even large creatures, and it sticks 'permanently' to any surface. Casting a glob on the egg will basically cement it to whatever surface it sits on when the glob is cast.
I wouldn't put too much effort into keeping the egg warm. Don't want it hatching prematurely and petrifying Rodolfo. It is a curiosity, but like Kerrec said, you don't want it super-glued to you or anything nearby.
I think the best you can do is in your backpack, insulated by cloths or whatever on one side and Rodolfo's body heat on the other side.

I’m not sure I understand what to do with either the monsters or the circle at this point.

Okay. Does that mean we can attempt the summoning or do we need to do something before it can be attempted?

Well we've found a thing we were asked to find, so it sounds like we're good to return.

In case it matters later:
Who will helm the check to inspect/explore to be sure Entremoch's Boon is 'safe'?
(Beegred fails to notice everyone else taking a step back, while he is standing in place.) "What the...? I didn't volunteer!"

Should we take the egg? Maybe we can raise it was a pet

Oh goodness… we could never look at it!

Maybe the turning to stone is a power they can turn on and off - wouldn't they turn their significant others to stone if it was always on
