I will not completely remove any risk, however at the cost of the summoned earth elemental, I will reduce the chances of having an encounter (that involves you actually having to battle) to 10%, ie: a 19 or 20 on a d20. But your earth elemental will be used up.
Per the module, you will have to fight 1d4 + 2 battles to reach the lair of the Pudding King, minus one for each minor objective accomplished prior to the battle. So the result will be 1d4 - 1.
To summarize: roll 1d20 1d4-1 times. On a 19 or 20, you fight oozes.
So I think as long as you don't let ArgentTheSilver roll, the odds are not likely you will actually end up fighting.
Provided there are no more curve balls from the DM, I have enough juice to spike growth a couple encounters. I can make magic stones so that our martials don't have to burn up their weapons, too. Or they can take my weapons
I'm good to go. I was just making clear what I had reservations about, and why.
I made this offer before (which Skameros declined), but if Skameros would like to borrow the magic short sword for this fight, he is welcome to use it. I understand he prefers to use a big weapon instead of a butter knife, but it won't be damaged by acid, and a bugbear's "reach" will let him avoid acid splash.

and to be honest I had forgotten about the splitting of the puddings because of slashing.
I'm not trying to be difficult - and I suspect this is probably a big part of this campaign but there hasn't really been any reason or motivation for us to accomplish this task other than it where we came to find help. It's not like the gnomes have offered us any assistance (that I recall) in what I think was our original goal - to reach the surface and return those who belong there. They've treated us like crap from the time we knocked on the gates, making us prove we're not out to kill them only to be conscripted in to what appears to be to be a losing battle with a superior army of very deadly and very problematic creatures. The gnomes seem under prepared and equipped to deal with this and I certainly feel the same way. I feel we're just spinning our wheels for nothing.
maybe I'm just having a bad day.
maybe I'm wrong
in the interest in moving the game forward, Skameros will feel moved by the dedication you've shown each other and agree to move forward.
Oh I understand and share your view ArgentTheWise - we've gained a level in this place and that's it. Along the way we've not really been trusted or helped in any way. But I guess that's part of the campaign.
And I did mean it that Skameros can sit this one out - it actually makes sense for someone to go back to the city proper and tell them what's going on. Might even run into the sentient gelatinous cube. In real life terms I imagine this won't take a whole lot of time as the plan is straightforward and the whole situation is on the clock anyways by in-game-time.
The module does just assume the party will all just be heroic and take on the task of fighting The Pudding King. Your points of view and realistic approach has thrown the module off its rails. But it is a nice change of pace from the path my RL table took.

I suggest Skameros using the spell-casters as meat shields (instead of the other way around). Effective way of using that extra 5' of weapon reach.

Rodolfo will grab the books (using gust if needed to push them to the edge of the pool first), put them on a nearby rock and cast a quick prestidigitation to clean then up, then bag them for later.
Sure, no problem. However, doing that will ensure you start last in the initiative.
Am I correct in assuming that the earth elemental is now gone? We "traded him in" in exchange for the reduced chance of encounters?
Kerrec said he reduced the encounter chance to 10%. If it was originally 20%, then that elemental just saved us from having 2 fights out of 3 chances (the 17 and 18).
Definitely worth it. You managed to foil the evil plans of the dice gods.

Oh, it was worth a lot more than that. The module flat out says 1d4+1 (- mods) encounters to reach the Pudding King. Done deal.
I traded in your Earth Elemental to make each encounter only result in a fight on a 19 or 20. So it went from Done deal to rare.
I heard you all loud and clear that fighting oozes is not what you signed up for. Even this upcoming encounter is not about combat necessarily.
Speaking of which, I'm posting the map (which has the combat order), but will post the write up tomorrow. Just wait for it, but feel free to figure out the scene.

Paladin - warforged - orange
Are you referring to something I've done, or just saying that in general?
I just meant the statues that we had wrecked before becoming a whole new ball game after they could throw rocks.
This was not a criticism, just meant as a note that not everything goes as expected

I don't want to move on until Beegred and Skameros agree with Rodolfo and Thurnir.

The majority seem to be on board with Rodolfo's plan. But Skameros's last post seems like he's staying behind?
Having died once in this campaign I'm not overly keen to rush in to killing off another character.
