The crotchety gnome, who just stands there fists on hips while the gnomes accost the party, yells out in gnomish, "You're all acting worse than a surfacer! You're all sick in the head. Back off before that bugbear pet starts biting heads off!"
With that admonishment, the crowd disperses and you all have your personal space once again. The crotchety gnome still stands there fists on hips, facing the group. "You see, everyone is wrong in the head. Why should we be trusting you?"
"Hey, hands off my stuff!" Narstin cries as he realizes he's missing things. His eyes dart around the gnomes around him trying to see who might have his stuff.
He looks to the crotchety gnome as the creature speaks up. "You should trust us because we're here to help you!" he says. "We already killed off two oozes"
(Nevermind the second part. Still don't speak gnomish to know what he said :P)
Beegred: "Rodolfo or Skameros... Whichever of you understand his jibber-jabber, can you get his name? That way we can tell Perogi Perigrog that all his work organizing a trip to the salt mines is being ruined by the otyugh sphincter in front of us."

"Hey, that's my....!" he starts to call after the gnome with his axe, but glances around at the sea of the creatures around them and trails off, deciding it's not worth making a fuss over. After all, he still has another one, and he doesn't use them for much of anything anyway.
As the standoff continues, Rodolfo arguing the party's case to the crotchety gnome and the other gnomes milling about waiting for a shift in the mood to decide what to do... Perigrog returns. He seems concerned at first to see everyone facing off, but then launches onto a table and starts to shout his fellow gnomes down. Handing out tasks to the shift that just woke up, ordering the shift that just returned to eat, he gets the situation under control. He apologetically segregates you from the gnomes, assigning you your own corner in the room. He continues to keep the gnomes busy getting ready for the expedition and out of your hair.
Eventually, the waiting ends and Perigrog asks you to follow him. You head out into the mine shaft and take the lead in front of a long train of gnomes leading giant lizards with dozens of empty sacks hanging from their backs. Perigrog says, "When we get near, you will go ahead and clear the area. When you give the signal, the train will begin moving in. Agreed?"
Your party leaves the gnomes behind to wait while you scout ahead. You enter the cavern with the ooze highway and set up in your positions, then you sit and wait for something to happen.
You wait.
And wait some more.
Just when you start to look at each other thinking nothing is going to happen, your minds are blasted with a grating mental screech, "FLESH FOR THE FACELESS GOD!"
From the ceiling, out of the fissure, a large ooze pours out followed by a smaller one. The ooze splat onto the floor then reform into their shapes. You recognize the smaller as one of the more benign gray oozes, and the larger one known as the black puddings

With two violent strikes, Beegred eviscerates the gray ooze. It loses it's form and flows down the slope into the trench, adding it's fluids to the trench.

Rodolfo notices the things happening and spits (continuing in gnomish), "You ******** really know how to make friends, don't you."
He then continues more calmly.
"We are here to protect your sorry asses from oozes and what do you do? Attack us and steal from us?"
"We were told people were on the edge and suspicious, but come on. You're Svirfneblin, you are better than this! We are here to help you!"
(Observant feat is already factored into your passive perception)
Beegred slaps some hands away, and his dagger falls to the ground. The gnomes don't appear to understand anything Beegred says.
