Starting at 2nd level, when you hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can expend one spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon’s damage. The extra damage is 2d8 for a 1st-level spell slot, plus 1d8 for each spell level higher than 1st, to a maximum of 5d8.

(That's true, and I have no problem deciding after you see your attack and damage rolls whether you want to use a smite spell. And if you know how much hp a person actually has, then yoou can even use that to decide whether or not to spend the spell slot based on your damage roll and their remaining health. but that's different from Rolling attack and damage, then saying "if they aren't dead after that, I'll use smite as well". Or waiting for them to say that they aren't dead yet, then deciding to smite)
(@Stone I'm talking from a DM perspective as far as punishing the players in a 'normal' campaign. And I wouldn't call a random tourney match an important backstory one unless its with a rival one has been hamming up leading into or over the course of the tournament arc for the big pay off, or a championship fight. But eh, to each his own. I don't know epee's troubled past. :P)

Mazara heals Raeebite and then makes a few cuts at the air before slashing a thin line across the Dwarf's chest (damage resisted due to rage, Runthiel contest with Performance/Acrobatics, 1 ) as twin beams of fire and light hit Vurnic. As he walks near Epee, the paladin jabs at him with his polearm and there is a burst of light as the blade connects. At the end of Mazara's turn, the glow surrounding him suddenly flares and sears everyone in the vicinity, dropping Epee.
Maginio steps behind Mazara, throwing a skeletal hand at Vurnic that just barely latches on to the tip of one of the hobgoblin's ears.
Raeebite flails in vain at Vurnic, whose plate armor seems nigh impenetrable. He then interposes himself between Ashiera and Vurnic.
Cultic whips out at Vurnic, but with the same result as Raeebite, nothing.

Hissing at mazara as the other's aura seers him, Sha'kar looks slightly molified by the fact that Epee drops unconscious once again from the same effect. Turning his attention to Runthiel instead, Sha'kar slashes out at the barbarian with his shadow blade, green flames wreathing the blade to jump to Vurnic if it strikes home.
