'Kestrell notices Orlys not moving and nods in appreciation. Then his attention returns to the golden stalagmites. Upon noticing the mushrooms, he shouts'
"Alright, here are a few more mush..."
'And gets cut off by the skeletal hands as they startle him.'
"SKELETONS AND SPIDERS" 'he finishes loudly.'
"Bugbear! Are you still there? I hope you have all your hair! We are going to need to take care! I don't know why I'm rhyming, it isn't fair!"
'Kestrell backs up one step before continuing'
"It looks like they are going to be on us at any moment. Whichever comes out first, I'll mock it viciously, and you wack the living piss out of it!"
'Kestrell casts Minor Illusion between the fey spider mass and he and Orlys, creating an image of a large mass of webbing with the legs and fangs of a large Mama fey spider sticking out.'
"Maybe that will slow down the fey spiders."
'The bony hands continue waving about blindly grasping a foot or so above the carpet of webbing, but do not appear to be emerging through any further. The motion continues to send vibrations throughout the webbing however, and the previously small puddle of tiny fey spiders continues to grow before Kestrell's very eyes. The bard summons the illusion of webbing including somewhat unconvincing arachnid fangs and legs, and a small 'arm' of the growing swarm extends momentarily towards it... before withdrawing back into the growing mass which continues to boil up from somewhere below. The diameter of the still growing fey spider swarm is now roughly five feet and increasing with every passing heatbeat.'
[OOC] Just a reminder that minor illusion can create sounds or images of objects, but not creatures. It's fine if you want to continue trying to use it in this fashion, but I just want you to be aware of why the description is unflattering re the usage. [Meta] In this instance, the usage is largely ineffective due to the spiders tremorsense.
Orlys lifts his maul resignedly, but stands his ground. "Tha's a fine rhyme, but get yer bony self behind me." He will stand ready.
Action: Ready an attack for the first thing that enters his range, which is 5' further out than that of most critters, because long arms. So anything that enters 3/6, 4/6, or 5/6 will get whacked.
'As a small tendril of the apparently intrigued largefey spider swarm extends towards the bard's illusion, a handful of the tiny insects stray within range of the long-armed Orlys'maul. With a growl, the ready bugbear brings his heavy weapon up, over and down in a choping motion, smashing bits of cold, brittle grey webbing and exploding the tiny blue-white carapaces into a grey-blue smear on the cavern floor. However, the loss of a few of its individual members seems to do nothing to bother or deter the growth of the swelling spider swarm, which even now has grown out to cover an area of almost ten square feet. The outside edges of the consolidated swarm begin to oscillate like small waves, in and out, almost as though the horde of tiny creatures is preparing to move enmasse one way or another, but have yet to choose a direction.'
[OOC] Orlys' strike hit the floor at 4/6.
The large fey spider swarm now covers 2/4, 3/4, 2/5 & 3/5.

A'ro just looks at the Bugbear "As long as everyone else is good with us going - yes we can leave."
His attention turns to Vaken and Kay, as the bard continues on himself "I'm afraid our friend may be going mad. It appears you two hold the important votes. What do you two want to do? I don't want to see you two put in harms way for a mushroom of all things. Though if you want to keep pressing on, we will."
'As A'ro finishes speaking, Orlys simply shrugs and moves forward with maul in hand to stand in front of Kestrell, apparently consulting with the navigator on a course of action to deal with some mounting problem in the chamber at the end of the tunnel, a problem that master of sail cannot make out from where he currently stands.
Kay and Vaken are standing undecided, the sail monkey and cook looking hestitantly back-and-forth between the two ships officers. Finally Kay speaks up with a weary and resigned shrug and says,'
"I'm not keen on facing more'n we have to of them spiders, but surely we can't be leavin' our fellow..."
'That is as far as the dishevelled young sailor gets before the bugbear begins yelling for fire as he grabs their bold navigator and begins backing back down the tunnel towards the rest of their small party.'

'As the trailing edge of Kestrell's once fine cloak is grabbed by the shouting bugbear who tries to pull the brazen bard back towards the larger Southern chamber, the navigator shrugs off the goblinoids hand and unleashes his tirade of witty insults at the writhing mass, though the swarm's only acknowledgement is to change direction ever-so-slightly to orientate towards Kestrell as the now hundreads of tiny white-blue spiders begin streaming along the tunnel floor and walls towards their waiting meal.'

'Kay is in the process of moving to assist the blue eyed bard and their hulking bugbear companion, when she sees them begin to retreat up the tunnel as the latter calls for fire. The sail monkey's confusion is broken when she sees the horrifyingly wide and thick swarm of tiny crawling fey spiders boil around the far corner and begin streaming in their direction.
Kay is about to turn and retreat back towards the waiting ships mage and the ledge above, when she notices their navigator unsurprisingly call out insults to the swarm... before the tall, tanned officer does surprisingly step to the side of the tunnel as if to wait for the approaching swarm to roll over him. Having to blink her eyes a few times to check she's not seeing things, the stunned sail monkey stops her retreat, muttering darkly in frustration as she turns back towards the swarm. Pushing her way past the master of sail, Kay rushes forward with a worried look on her narrow face to adopt a defensive stance infront of Kestrell. Grimly facing the oncoming swarm, the skinny rogue steels herself as she growls over her right shoulder,'
"No offence, Mr. Navigator Kestrell Bardson... err, sir, but if'n ya don't mind me askin' afore we both die horribly... have ye lost yer BLAZIN' mind! There's a whole heap o' crawlin' nasties comin' ourways, if'n ye hadn't noticed. Might've been a good idea to run this one time... though a bit late to worry about that now..."
'Even as the swarm continues its advance, you all hear Virt's voice call out as it echos through the large cavern and down the cold stone tunnel where you all currently stand,'
"Hey, yes! Good, I finally got it, A'ro. Hey, just to let ye all know - the rope is secured and ready fer ye all to climb back up. What's all that shoutin' 'bout, by the way? Vaken?"
[OOC] RND1: Kay moves to 10/10 and takes the dodge action. Virt, as yet unaware of the new threat, uses his turn to finish securing the rope which runs down into 7/6.
*Please forgive me if this goes horribly wrong, Abunny, but it's what I thought you would have done with Kay in this situation.
Vaken is up, then the Large Fey Spider Swarm LFSS, then A'ro and we're just waiting on Orlys' initiative, but I'll bot him if it gets to the end of the turn. Then we'll start RND2.
D&D is a game, but it's not just a game. It's the ultimate storyboard, a campfire to share with friends, an imaginary call to imaginary arms and a ship to sail to horizons yet undreamt of...
'Vaken, seeing the lithe sail monkey rushing back to make a stand, looks over his shoulder for a moment at the rope hanging tantalisingly close, glances forlornly up at the ship's mage standing above before growling out a curse and turning back to rush to the aid of his companions within the crowded tunnel. Bustling his way past the master of sail to take a stand behind Kay who is even now dancing around the swarming horde of biting insects, the towering goliath fails to pay sufficient attention to the icy ground and slips on the trecherous footing, slamming onto his back before gingerly climbing back to his feet.
As the front edge of the large fey spider swarm all but engulfs his frantically dancing and dodging ship mate... before continuing on in an attempt to bury the bard, the bugbear and himself beneath its crawling and writhing mass, Vaken calls out in a strange and guttural tongue as he slams the butt of his heavy staff into the stone floor, summoning once again into the greying staff the ancient power of the fey warped land around him. Even as ices begins to freeze both ends of the staff, the wide-eyed cook brings the weapon up overhead in preparation to smash it down onto the spiders around him.'
[OOC] Vaken moves to 10/11 making a dex save vs DC vs DC11 to not slip and fall prone: 8 - fail. Vaken falls prone and uses half his remaining movement to stand up again.
Vaken takes the ready action to attack the LFSS as soon as it comes within reach: Attack: 20 Damage: 7 plus 3 cold damage - hit. LFSS takes 7 bludgeoning and 3 cold damage.
Vaken's con save (with advantage due to being Mountain Born) to avoid 1 pt of cold damage from his altered shillelagh: 813 - success.
'With an involuntary cry of rage at the perverted twisting that has been done to this place and its denizens, Vaken brings the end of his fey enchanted staff smashing down into the mass of spiders beside him, crushing and freezing a dozen or more with a single blow and sending yet others flying away from the voracious mass as he raises his weapon in preperation for his next strike.
As the scuttling swarm engulfs the goliath and his three adjacent companions, dozens, hundreds maybe, of the furious tiny fey spiders dash at, around and onto Kays spinning and weaving form in attempt to sink their multitude of jagged little fangs into her body. Despite the frenzied agility and desperate energy that Kay puts into her evasive efforts, there are simply too many of the tiny spiders to avoid. Vaken can only watch in growing horror as the tiny vermin swarm up the sail monkeys legs, covering her skinny torso as they lock their maws onto her flesh... before bearing the coughing, wide-eyed brave young sailor to the ground beneath their dark, writhing wave-like mass.'
[OOC] LFSS bite attack vs Kay (with disadvantage due to Kay's dodge action): Attack: 20 Damage: 10hit - Kay takes 10 piercing damage and is now on 0 HP, unconscious and must make death saving throws starting her next turn until she gains HP or stabilizes.

'As A'ro shouts angrily to have the fallen Kay taken to safety, busy as they are with their own troubles, some of his companions glance his way and catch sight of the air genasi's violet eyes flashing momentarily white as blue electrical energy flares around his hands. The enraged sorcerer turns towards the large fey spider swarm even as a dozen of the tiny biting spiders crawl over the nearby bugbear's head and shoulders in an attempt to sink their fangs into his furred hide, the master of sail begins clutching, burning and discarding handfuls of now smoking husks, clearing as many of the voracious insects as he can away from the labouring body of his besieged ally.'

'Orlys' *ROAR* echos up and down the spider filled tunnel even as the horde of tiny but ferocious arachnids swarm atop him, attempting to sink their little fangs in any exposed or vulnerable spots on the furious bugbears body. So preoccupied is he with his own rage and determination to kill and destroy this mass of vermin, that Orlys barely notices the heat behind him as the energy wielding sorcerer joins the fray to burn some of the large fey spider swarm from his back. Crushing a handful of the bugs beneath his rag-wrapped heels and against the nearby wall by slamming himself bodily against it, the raging barbarian finally brings his great maul down three times, *CRUNCH-CRUNCH-CRUNCH* as he smashes substantial areas of the writhing spiders into paste as his braided beard flies about wildly during his furious onslaught. Panting even as he looks for more of these filthy things to slaughter, Orlys notices that through his own efforts and those of his current allies of circumstance, more than half of the large fey spider swarm seems to have been destroyed in fast order, despite the possible loss of the brave young human woman. Eyes narrowing, the cat-faced goblinoid growls a challenge out as all but a few of the remaining spiders swarm towards and over his ichor splattered form.'

"Oh, poor spiders! Your fangs will find no purchase here, and your poison is not welcome! Soon you will be nothing but a paste beneath our boots!"

The still ravenous spiders, intent upon their prey, are nonetheless distracted by the lilting magic-laced words of the bard, though they continue their assault upon the nearby goblinoid.'

OOC > Here is Orlys' Round 2 action, results spoilered for all the people who go before him (which is everyone), and in case he is taken down by the spiders and it is moot.
Barely noticing the actions of his comrades, the giant bugbear continues to smash and stamp the tiny spiders, all the rage from his imprisonment, his fear, and his exhaustion burning in him.
Continuing: Rage! for this and eight more rounds. +2 dmg, resistant to b, p, s dmg, adv on Str checks and saves Action: Attack with the maul. 11 to hit, for 11 bludgeoning damage Move: No move, he stands his ground.

Once the vial is empty, Vaken carefully lifts Kay and starts to carefully walk toward the rope Virt threw down.
[OOC] Kay is healed for 7 hp.
'As the injured and weary Vaken selflessly ignores his own wounds to focus on the fallen Kay, the goliath attempts to crouch down on the slippery ice to administer the potion of healing but instead slips on the trecherous ground and tumbles to the floor at her side.'
[OOC] Vaken's dexterity save vs DC11 for beginning his turn on the slippery and difficult icy terrain: 16 fail. Original roll of 3 in case edit messes up the formatting.
'Gingerly rising to a kneeling position, the determined ships cook pours the precious life giving fluid into the dying woman's mouth, even as the huge man struggles back to his own feet. Looking about at the carnage of dead spiders and injured ship mates around him, Vaken's stiff and sore body siezes up as he attempts to kneel back down to gather up his small friends motionless form, even as Kay's eyes flicker open and a choked off gasp escapes her lips. Seeing this, the huge man while clearly reluctant to abandon the still prone sail monkey, notices that the remaining spiders have turned their attention to the raging bugbear and, realising his own precarious situation, steps a away from the iced floor, past the navigator and nearer to the tunnel wall.
As the goliath steps away and the waif awakes once again to her surroudings, the diminished remainder of the large fey spider swarm crawls atop Orlys' lashing and thrashing form, but seems distracted in their attentions, ultimately proving unable to sink their fangs in sufficiently to bring a second of these unwelcome intruders to the cold cavern floor.'
[OOC] RND2:Kay regains the 7 HP from the potion of healing administered by Vaken. Kay is now conscious but still prone. Vaken moves to 10/12.
LFSS bite attack vs Orlys: Attack: 23 Damage: 8 - 2nd attack roll for disadvantage - 7 - miss. LFSS is still occupying square 9/10 concurrently with Orlys.

[OOC] Large Fey Spider Swarm's wisdom saving throw: 17 - success.

DM Trevails Upon the Trackless Sea
Vaken's con save (with advantage due to being Mountain Born) to avoid 1 pt of cold damage from his altered shillelagh: 8 13 - success.
[OOC] LFSS bite attack vs Kay (with disadvantage due to Kay's dodge action): Attack: 20 Damage: 10 hit - Kay takes 10 piercing damage and is now on 0 HP, unconscious and must make death saving throws starting her next turn until she gains HP or stabilizes.
The LFSS is now occupying 9/10, 9/11, 10/10 & 10/11 concurrently with the 4 PCs in those squares.
RND1: A'ro is up, then Orlys. Then we begin RND2.
Current Initiative Order:
Kestrell 21
Kay 20
Virt 18
Vaken 14
LFSS 11
A'ro 9
Orlys 8

A'ro just looks to Kestrell as Kay passes out and then back to the swarm '****'. He just reaches out towards the swarm his anger for Kestrell's recklessness fueling the growing storm around his arms as primordial leaves his lips trying to shock the swarm.
"Get her to the rope - the crew is more important than a stupid quest. Let them call us quitters, I can live with that. Just get her to safety." he shouts as he reaches down and releases the lighting touch towards the swarm.

[OOC] RND1: LFSS takes 12 bludgeoning damage from Orlys. LFSS is below 50% HP and is now medium sized. LFSS occupies 9/10 concurrently with Orlys.
RND2 is now starting and everyone should post their RND2 actions. Kestrell is up first, with the order of initiative as listed in post #941.

"Kay! You can't run from spiders! They must be slain!"
'As Kay goes down:'
"Oh, maybe we should have run!"
"Virt! We've got a spider swarm. Hang on, we may be coming up in a hurry and need your help!"
'As everyone blasts the spiders, and the size of the swarm visibly diminishes':
"HAHAHA, yes! Keep pouring it on!"
'Realizing that if the spider swarm manages to connect, it could spell doom for any of them, Kestrell casts Vicious Mockery, hoping to distract them enough from their attack.'
"Oh, poor spiders! Your fangs will find no purchase here, and your poison is not welcome! Soon you will be nothing but a paste beneath our boots!"
[OOC]: Wisdom saving throw of 14 or take 1 psychic damage and have disadvantage on their next attack.
'Seeing the fury with which his allies are laying waste to the now diminished, but once large fey spider swarm, Kestrell again trains his blade-sharp tongue on the much hated spiders that crawl across the furred hide of the growling maul wielding bugbear. The still ravenous spiders, intent upon their prey, are nonetheless distracted by the lilting magic-laced words of the bard, though they continue their assault upon the nearby goblinoid.'
[OOC] RND2: LFSS wisdom save: 7 - fail. LFSS takes 1 psychic damage and has disadvantage on its next attack.
'Left with pale, drawn bite-marked skin upon the cold cavern floor where she fell, the unconscious Kay is clearly visible to her still battling companions.
[OOC] Kay's 1st death save: 13 - fail. *Edit caused the original roll of 9 to change.
'Calling out in response to the navigator's shout, Virt responds with,'
"Aye, I'm waiting and ready to assist. Standing by to hoist ye to safety, mates."

+2 dmg, resistant to b, p, s dmg, adv on Str checks and saves
Action: Attack with the maul. 11 to hit, for 11 bludgeoning damage
Move: No move, he stands his ground.
OOC > Fudge. Is a nice food. Sigh.

Vaken pulls the potion of healing from his pack and runs up to Kay and pours it down her throat, slapping spiders away from her face in the process. "Drink up little one!"
[OOC] DM, I assume the above took and action, but I still have movement left. Would it take an action to pick Kay up before using said movement? Assuming it's allowed....
Once the vial is empty, Vaken carefully lifts Kay and starts to carefully walk toward the rope Virt threw down.
[OOC] Kay is healed for 7 hp.
Campaigns:
DM - Waterdeep Dragon Heist PbP
[OOC] RND2: Kay regains the 7 HP from the potion of healing administered by Vaken.
A'ro is up now, then Orlys (whose action is posted) to finish the round. Then we start RND3.
