"Uhhh..." Rees carefully pulls an arrow from her quiver and readies her bow. "We have company. Just...be ready."
The bear tests the water with a paw... then finding it safe to cross gets in and starts to swim towards the smell of the cooking deer.. and the party...
Alten will grab the organs, entrails, brains, etc left from butchering the deer and toss them at the bank of the river where the bear is likely to emerge.

Shake tries to hide behind a fallen tree, but he trips on the way and makes a very loud scene.
It takes the bear quite awhile as it fights the current and swims the distance... but, it eventually makes the side of the river which you are on and heads straight for the entrails.. easy meal for it.. good thinking.
Do you stick around to see if it wants more or move out?
I assume we're not trying to roast a whole side because of the time. If we've cooked whatever deer steaks we cut and can take it with us, then let's move out.

Fair enough.. you've cooked enough for a big breakfast and probably lunch. You move out and follow the river towards your goal.
All is quite until early afternoon when you spot a boat headed downstream on the river...
What kind of boat? How big? Manner of propulsion? Cargo barge, passenger boat
It's heading away from where we're going, right? Downstream would be heading west, to the coast?
As the boat gets closer you can see it is some sort of open topped barge. There are two dwarves (one on each side) with very long poles steering it, a third dwarf is on the rudders at the stern, and a fourth manning a large heavy crossbow bolted to the helm. You can see a large mound of something in the center, but it is covered by a thick cloth tarp so that you can’t see exactly what that something is. The barge is headed towards you; so away from Mirabar out towards the cities along the coast.
Alten intends to wave but keep going unless someone else hails them or has a reason for interacting
They’re going the wrong way for us to catch a ride and we aren’t robbers, so. . .
As they come along side (they're still far as they are in the middle of the river) the dwarfs stare at you cautiously, not returning the wave. The crossbow is point down, but in your direction.
You continue on following the river for the better part of the day. You see two more boats outfitted much the same as the first one you saw in the morning. Eventually towards early evening you turn a bend in the river and spot some sort of village up ahead. As you approach and your field of vision widens you realize that it is not a village at all, but a fortification of some sort protecting a stone bridge. On the other side of the river you can see the tops of buildings in a sprawling city surrounded by fortified walls...
Grom as a Dwarf yourself you relay the following information to the party:
Mirabar is the richest city of the North by far. It sits atop a knoll on the north side of the Mirar River like an unassailable fortress, enclosed on all sides by sloped outer walls as wide at the base as many city blocks in Waterdeep. Defenders can fire arrows down from atop the walls, or, in winter, pour water down them to make ice slides. There is no shortage of stone and weaponry. Even the docks have battlements and fortifications.
Visitors to Mirabar often wonder why they don’t see more dwarves, as humans make up the majority of the city’s surface dwellers. Another city lies just below the surface, and that place is dominated by dwarves. Underground, Mirabar is a city of lit residential caverns, superheated forges, foundries that operate day and night, and tunnels leading to the mines.
Mirabar’s marchion, Selin Ramur (LN male Damaran human noble), meets with the other members of the Lords’ Alliance to ensure that Mirabar’s interests aren’t ignored. While the marchion handles foreign policy, true power within the city rests with the Council of Sparkling Stones, a group of dwarf elders that manages the city’s security and decides where the output of Mirabar’s mines are sold. The city’s defense falls to the Axe of Mirabar, a well-armed garrison. All members of the Axe of Mirabar are shield dwarves.
"Reminds me of a song," Shake says as they look upon the city. He then lays down a beat using the plate and utensils and sings:
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck gettin' dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity?
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people lookin' half dead
Walkin' on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night, it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on, and dance all night
Despite the heat, it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights
In the summer in the city
In the summer in the city
Cool town, evening in the city
Dressed so fine and lookin' so pretty
Cool cat lookin' for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
'Til I'm wheezing like a carriage stop
Runnin' upstairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop
But at night, it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on, and dance all night
Despite the heat, it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
The days can't be like the nights

You can't see from where you're at currently.. there's almost a small village surrounding the bridge. It's clearly fortified by a wall and clusters of what look like houses from here.

As long as you do not raise them hostilely then the crew continues on its way...
More defensively/reflexively than aggressive/hostile.
Edit: But I am a towering metal monstrosity and they are just but wee dwarves (no offence Grom)
Warforged Fighter Talien
Cool, yeah they don't do anything unless you are openly hostile. They're just protecting their cargo.
