Soar nods at the pixie in an encouraging manner, indicating Orleen. She nods in thanks at the Lieutenant.
”Thank you for coming to help us, Orleen. I have tried to learn some words of sylvan, but boy it is harder than this tongue, or even celestial, infernal, or draconic!” the half-elf says, self-consciously in almost-perfect elvish. “She said that her friend is trapped in there. The only time the wagon was open, I saw a glimmer of light inside. Could be nothing, could be something bad. Can you talk to her and help us find out?” She smiles a very very winning smile, again trying to charm the pants off of this guard.
The young elf guardsman speaks in a familiar, though incomprehensible language, and the pixie almost explodes in a torrent of words as she flits about from side to side, making tiny gesticulations, pointing at Soar, pointing at the wagon and the gargoyle, pointing at herself.
The elf looks confused at first, then you see him give a start as a shocked expression comes over his face. He stands up taller, as though standing to attention as the pixie continues to speak and speak. Eventually she comes to an end, and the elf bows deeply to her. He turns to the lieutenant: Um, this is Her Highness the Princess Udays of the Wealdath. She does state that her sister is being held captive within the wagon, that she is a witness and requests that we assist her in resolving this matter. Lieutenant, I'm afraid I don't know about the diplomatic status of the Princess in Waterdeep, but...
Dammit, a diplomatic... crap. Fine. Lieutenant Mixtier turns to Lasfelro. Open the wagon.
Lasfelro looks shocked. What... this... I must protest. I have an order to deliver the contents only to the representatives of Lord Notturis, and...
And the good Lord will not want to be involved in anything underhand, I'm sure. Open the wagon.
Lasfelro looks unhappy rather than scared, but he complies, and opens the wagon door. The gargoyle does not respond. He withdraws a wooden case, places it on the ground, and opens it. Within it is a cage, and within the cage, barely moving, is a pixie.
This creature, he says flatly, is no intelligent person. It is a pet. And it has been purchased by Lord Notturis for his daughter. I suggest you take this matter up with him.
As Orleen translates, Soar's expression turns from a facade of confidence masking some uncertainty, to surprise.
"Royalty? Among the fey? Of course..."Soar mutters to herself, in Common.
Has Soar heard of Lord Notturis?
She kneels down next to Udays near the wagon as it is opened. She turns to Elspeth, and says, "got one of those berries, by any chance?"Either way, she'll try to see if the pixie in the cage is close enough to the outside that she could reach a finger in and Lay on Hands to heal her. She doesn't quite make that move yet, though, still aware of Lasfelro. "It's not intelligent? It's a pet? Let's heal her up, feed her properly, and ask her."
She turns to the guards. "Lieutenant, would you mind if I cast a harmless spell that will allow me todetect magic, to see if there is anything arcane affecting this person locked in this cage? It seems like she is not well, and needs food or possibly healing. Pixies, I understand from storybooks, are very powerful, so I find it odd that this poor soul seems helpless."
She looks at Lasfelro. "Let me offer you a piece of advice, as a former employee tasked with keeping you safe. Waterdhavians don't take kindly to kidnapping and slavery. But they really, really don't like diplomatic spats with powerful foreign governments. Kidnapping royalty? Well that sounds like a headache to me. If you value your safety -- something I somehow still do, call me a sap -- I would not fight the Lieutenant here on this."
OOC: have the dragon cultist wagons departed the scene by now?
Nate would've been definitely keeping an eye on the cultists wagon... but if they departed the scene, Nate would not have followed them. Even with Soar's look from before, he's not going to leave this situation just yet. Especially now that he's found out this "fairy" is a Princess. who the hell knew fairies could be princesses
Nate would keep listening... oh wow one of them is being kept as a pet? shit, that's not going to fly with Soar. Ok this is getting good
Nate isn't really affected by the fact that the pixie might be being held against her will, and actually thinks a pixie might make a good pet after all. He would never express this though, especially now! I know this isn't really following the whole druid persona... but like before at that town with the light, and all through this campaign, Nate is only a druid based on his power he draws from nature. He doesn't share a lot of the same morals as true druids might (like an Elspeth might).
Mixtier frowns. It may come to that. We have our own resources, however. She looks at Orleen, the young elf who is watching nervously as Udays flits angrily around the cage. He speaks to her softly in sylvan, and the pixie touches the cage to cast some kind of spell; I think you would all recognise this as dispel magic. It's hard to say whether there was any effect, but the pixie then grabs at the cage's little door and starts to pull. Orleen speaks again, and she backs off. Orleen stands. The key please, sir, he says with a little anger showing in his voice.
Lasfelro the Silent remains silent, and does nothing in response to anything that he is asked.
I'm afraid I must insist, Lieutenant Mixtier says calmly. Please unlock the cage or hand over the key.
Lasfelro does nothing. Orleen shrugs, produces a set of lockpicks from his jacket, and gets to work on the cage, opening it in less than half a minute. It's a tense half minute though, with many curious onlookers gathering, and Lasfelro glowering but wholly isolated. Leda is watching, mouth open in astonishment at what is happening. The cultists have now gone, with Jamna tailing them and Carlon belatedly tailing Jamna.
Udays seems to want to fly into the cage, but Orleen cautions against it, and he very gently tips the cage so that the unconscious pixie slides very slowly out and onto the cobblestones. She remains unconscious, with Udays tending to her and engaged in soft conversation with Orleen. Mixtier motions for the other guards to start moving the crowd along.
Soar is honestly impressed that Lasfelro is holding still, but she keeps an eye on him all the same. She gives him a sincerely sympathetic look. It’s clear to her she did the right thing but she is rarely one to celebrate the disappointment or misfortune of others.
She turns back to the pixies.
“Can we try to heal her? It might not help, if she’s poisoned or cursed or just malnourished or exhausted. But worth a shot.”
Soar looks to Nate The Healer, but seeing his dispassionate gaze, she moves closer to get within range to touch the unconscious pixie. If she is allowed, she will lay on hands 10 hp.
She looks at Udays and offers an encouraging smile.
Yeah Nate wouldn't openly offer to heal the pixie, but if Soar asked him directly, he would. He also can create those berries if she asks him. But I assume the guards are about to shoo Nate away.
This spell seems like it would be quite easy to cast without anyone seeing... right? If that is the case, Nate would nonchalantly create the handful, then give one to Soar, and put the other 9 tucked away in his clothes should he need them in the next 24 hours.
Ideally he doesn't want anyone seeing this happen.
It's generally not possible - or at least very difficult - to cast magic without others knowing about it. You would need to find a place to hide or partially conceal you, and a Stealth check would be required at the very least.
Udays does allow Soar to place her hands on the slumbering pixie, and use her Lay On Hands ability. For a moment, nothing happens, but then she starts to stir. Then she awakes, as Udays hugs her and kisses her again and again. It takes a while, but eventually Orleen manages to catch the attention of the pixies in order to get a few words out. He nods quietly as the newly-woken pixie says some words, and then without warning, both pixies vanish.
Orleen stands, grim-faced, and goes to speak to Mixtier. You hear his words: The princesses... um.... needed to go. I think a large city is a difficult place for them to be.. I got some of the story though. He glances around him, then he takes the lieutenant to one side and speaks to her in a low voice, too low for you to hear now. The other guards are moving the crowd away, and there are few onlookers now that there are no pixies to see.
It takes a minute or two, but Mixtier and Orleen finish their conversation. Mixtier goes over to Lasfelro, and you see him being led away silently. The guards also move the wagon, still with gargoyle in place, along the street.
Orleen comes over to speak to Soar. Both princesses asked me to pass on their thanks, and their apologies for leaving. It is... well, they are fey creatures and this is a city of men, and... they are curious, but vulnerable here. And the Princess Oltara is still vulnerable after her ordeal. She said that she will come to speak to you soon, when she has recovered. She said she has much to discuss with you and, fortunately, she speaks elvish quite well. He smiles. Well done. You've done a great deed here. I... thank you as well.
Orleen gives you a salute, and soon the wagons, the onlookers, the guards, the merchants, everyone is gone, and four adventurers stand in the middle of the street as the pedestrians walk past them.
Soar is happy but dumbfounded as the healing magic works and the two sisters have their reunion and then leave abruptly.
When Orleen comes over and tells her what happened, Soar listens with wonder. "I had no idea. There was that very persistent pixie and it was so hard to understand her and I thought this was a giant misunderstanding and I really hoped it was just goods and not a kidnapping slaver ring. What will happen to Lasfelro and the gargoyle? Should I try to offer my salary back to him? I did complete the contract, but he might not think so. Thank you very much for helping translate there, Orleen, and for not dismissing me. Like I said, you can call me Soar. I'm your friendly neighborhood doomguide. It's good to be home, even for a little bit. I hope I see you again!"she says, with a wink. She gives Mixtier a salute.
She then turns back to Elspeth, Jalt, and Nate. "I.... owe you all a sincere apology. I should have planned that better. At all. Thank the gods it didn't turn into a disaster! And thank you for backing me up. I think we did a good deed. Now, I saw those two tail the targets, I think we can trust them to keep track of the wagons, right? Should we head over to the place Carlon mentioned before sundown? Happy to lead the way. We can also stay at the chapterhouse but... well... it's sort of dark there. And quiet. Not too bad if you're okay with skulls and dirges and sarcophaguses (sarcophagi? always forget that...). I should probably just stop by there, maybe later tonight or tomorrow. They must miss me a lot by now. They put on a good show when I was leaving, I even saw Brother Hanlin stop the permascowl and almost smile when he was told I wasn't coming back for a while, but I know they can't live without me."
Her voice, after so many weeks of plodding, morose, dry mumbling, has blossomed back into the bright happy patter you knew before.
How far is the intersection where we're to meet the Harpers from the South Gate? Soar will lead the party there, happily playing tour guide.
As they depart the scene, after others have a chance to say their peace, she rambles on, partly to herself: "Lasfelro's not mad at me, right? I'd be happy if someone fixed up something that would have been a total catastrophe with the law. I'm sorry we didn't get to say goodbye. He looked like he needed a hug." [OOC: marking down Lasfelro, gargoyle, Lord Notturis, Lord Notturis' daughter all as new sworn enemies...]
Positive Soar is back! She can't wait to get her black hair back to normal.
Jalt looks to Lasfelro being escorted away and looks back to Soar Your methods aren't the most calculated but your instincts are usually spot on. He smiles I think it best to not try to contact him ever again. We have gotten on the bad sides of quite a few people since we've embarked on this journey. Let the law have their way with him. For now I think its best if we met up with the contact before it is too late.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
Leda has been watching, a thoughtful expression on her face. Soar can absolutely talk to her if she wishes.
Mixtier leaves without a word to Soar, busy as she is with Lasfelro. But Orleen is friendly, polite, but firm. I'm afraid I can't really go into much detail. Rest assured that his connections won't protect him. Messing with the fey is dangerous, though pixies are the kindest fey you can meet.
According to the map, the meeting point with the Harper contact is about an hour's walk from here, in the Trade Ward. Soar leads the party there, and you are able to find the place easily.
You stand near the corner of a fairly large street filled with shops, and a much quieter residential street. The shops are all shutting up, and the main street has a few people seemingly walking home. Here and there as you've walked through the city streets there have been folks sitting around outside - the weather is chilly to you but not cold, and the people of Waterdeep seem to enjoy sitting in the streets to talk and work. You wait around for a moment, and notice three individuals who seem to be loitering about as the sun is setting. An elderly woman sits reading on a bench. A young gnome man with blond hair has set up a small chair and easel and seems to be working on a painting of the street. A halfling is tending a tree and small grassy area that appears to be public land; he's wearing a uniform with the emblem of the city.
"No problem... the more I get to know you, Soar, the more I realize we have a lot of differences, but when it comes down to it I'll always have your back. I owe you my life and will never forget that. I mean, Boar." Nate smiles at Soar. "Tell you one thing... I am glad we are on the same team."
"Yes let's head to the Harper contact before it gets too late... I am anxious to hear their next plans. And their next plans for us. I am worried we might be taking too much time given what I heard."
"And about the chapterhouse... honestly, I think I'd prefer a comfy, well lit, not so death like inn with a nice bed. No offence though." Another smile at Soar. (but he's serious about the inn vs. the chapterhouse lol)
So, Nate would follow along, still looking a bit like a lost puppy, with Soar leading the way to meet the Harper contact.
She will just swing by on her way out, head ducked a bit, eyebrows raised in a “well that just happened” sort of expression.
”So we found out what was inside it. I hope I didn’t endanger anything for you. I think anyone on the caravan, even the quiet one, would give you glowing references. Definitely me. You can call me Soar here. Most places, really. There’s a little pub, right outside of the City of the Dead. I’ll probably be there tomorrow - I owe you a drink and a longer story. Safe to say while I was a caravan guard, I was also tracking some bad people. Have to go attend to that. But then our boss turned out to have questionable taste in merchandise. Really didn’t think that would work out but I guess Kelemvor was watching out for me. Or the fey. I can’t really tell these days. Hope I see you again!”
Leda looks hesitant, but smiles. I still don't really understand what just happened, but I would hate to think I was involved in some kind of kidnapping. I'll take you up on that story one day Soar, but I'm not sure where I'll be tomorrow. I think I'm going to head on through - there's just something about this city that gives me the creeps. I'm headed north, like I said, Maybe I'll see you there. She gives you a handshake, and sets off through the streets of Waterdeep.
Soar will try to, once they get there, take a slow loop around and get closer looks at the painting and book and look to see if the book has black antlers on the cover or inside, or if the man is painting something with black antlers. Trying not to be obvious.
Elspeth is absolutely incensed at all of this - even if it was only a creature of animal intellect it's clearly been mistreated at the hands of Lasfelro. She just barely refrains from clustering around the unconscious pixie as she is brought out - not that she knows anything about pixie physiology, but it's generally a good idea not to crowd around patients.
She's not particularly impressed by the titles of the pixies, perhaps unlike her companions. Their title doesn't alter the fact that the fairy was horribly treated, and that was what mattered most to her. She stares with cold rage as Lasfelro is taken away. If Soar isn't opposed to her presence, Elspeth would like to have been listening in as Orleen comes over to explain what had happened.
She shakes her head to Soar's apology. "You have nothing to be sorry for, Soar. I'd have done the same thing. I regret not doing it earlier, to be honest, but no, I didn't it was important enough. Don't worry about Lasfelro. With luck, we'll never have to see him again. All the same, I'm glad that's over and done with. Although, uh, if Ms. Oltara does pop back in to see you again, could you update me on what happened and her health? Hopefully it ends well for them. For now, lead on, Soar."
[are we heading for the tavern jamna suggested? or soar's preferred pub near the city of the dead?]
Lieutenant, I'm afraid I don't know about the diplomatic status of the Princess in Waterdeep, but...
Dammit, a diplomatic... crap. Fine. Lieutenant Mixtier turns to Lasfelro. Open the wagon.
Lasfelro looks shocked. What... this... I must protest. I have an order to deliver the contents only to the representatives of Lord Notturis, and...

Lasfelro shouts out. No magic! Not to be trusted.
