You all head off through the city. The main streets have people bearing torches; you even see Watch patrols from time to time, and you pass through squares or busy commercial areas where taverns and cafes are open and doing a good trade. The city feels busy, but you also see that shops and businesses are shuttered - not all are still open at this time of night.
It takes about an hour, but you make it north through the city, past the Castle Ward and Sea Ward on your left, the North Ward on your right, until you come to the northernmost part of the North Ward, the old city walls where it borders the ramshackle Field Ward. The streets are definitely getting quieter, though pockets of life around taverns are still noisy and busy.
(I assume you're heading towards the Defiant Kobold, the tavern that Jamna said she would leave information for you - I'm not sure she said she would meet you there, though. Soar would know of another inn near the Defiant Kobold called the Crumbling Walls. Or do you want to go to the Merchant's Resolve, the inn recommended by Coral that's very close to her shop?)
Soar doesn't really know much about the Company, and certainly not where they might have a building. You don't recall anything from your time in Waterdeep.
I definitely got the names mixed up but yes you are right, we were looking at the Defiant Kobold, the one Jamna mentioned. We would leave the name of the inn Soar had in mind (the Crumbling Walls, love the name) with Coral before we left so she could get word to us.
I did incorrectly think Jamna said she would be there to meet us though - will have to go back to see what she said about leaving information for us there. I’m guessing the place where the Company operates their business is not on the way to the Defiant Kobold?
The Crumbling Walls tavern appears to be in very good condition, set against the old City Walls; it's too dark to see what condition the walls are inn, but the tavern is open and appears to be doing a good trade, so presumably the patrons are not worried.
You enter, and find yourself in a fairly typical common room for a higher-end inn; there are groups of people sitting around on tables, drinking and eating rather than getting completely drunk. It has a pleasant ambiance, and the halfling bartender welcomes you. Soar, you learn that the person you knew from before sold the inn several years ago to move to Neverwinter. Rooms at the inn cost 5 silver pieces each, plus an additional three for an evening meal - and you are all quite hungry, but are you eating here or at the Defiant Kobold?
Soar, you have no idea where the High Road Charter Company has its main building, if it has one in Waterdeep at all. You can make a Perception check to see if you noticed anything related to this on the walk from the South Gate to here.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Soar unperceptive check: 11
“Aw, well, I’m glad Danal found another adventure - this is a good inn, now that there’s no danger of zombies taking up room and board. Two rooms, I think, for us, and we’ll probably have breakfast but I believe we have business elsewhere for dinner this evening. Anything odd happening in town? I haven’t been here in a while, just got back.”
She will finish up the conversation and then head to the Defiant Kobold with whoever else wants to come. There she will find the bartender and ask for a Candlekeep wine. She looks around for Jamna, not expecting to see her.
The innkeeper of the Crumbling Walls thinks for a moment. Well, there's always something going on in Watedeep, but... nothing too out of the ordinary. Gangs causing trouble. Lords quarrelling, or so the rumours say. People saw a half-dragon riding through the Field Ward, that was a good tenday ago. Nothing much going on, I'd say.
You are able to make it to the Defiant Kobold, a slightly more downmarket establishment very close to the gate that leads into the Field Ward. As you ask for the Candlekeep wine, the innkeeper nods and shows you to a private room.
(Is everyone going with Soar?)
There's definitely no sign of Jamna, and you saw nothing related to the Company on the road through the city.
I will play out the letter thing with Jalt as retro though because Nate's going to try and open the letter, read it, and then mend it if Jalt gives it to him. If Jalt does not hand it over, Nate would've sulked about it for a few minutes while they walked to these various inns, then would've gotten over it.
Actually scratch that Nate didn’t have a good interaction with Jamna so he wouldn’t go into that inn. he would just go to the merchant’s retreat and get a room.
To help , please see an updated map of (part of) Waterdeep:
The red dot is the South Gate, where you entered the city and had the confrontation with Lasfelro.
The purple dot is Coral's shop.
The yellow dot is the Merchant's Resolve, the nearby tavern that Coral suggested - in case you didn't want to go through the city at night.
The green dot is the Defiant Kobold, the tavern where Jamna said she would leave information for you. It's in the North Ward.
The blue dot is the Crumbling Walls, a tavern close to the Defiant Kobold that Soar suggested. It's also in the North Ward.
You all journeyed to the Crumbling Walls, and some of you opted also to visit the Defiant Kobold to pick up information. So far, Soar is going, and Nate is not.
Soar, and whoever is with you, you wait in the private room for about ten minutes, and then the innkeeper comes in. It's a tall human woman with large wooden earrings made of multiple parts that clatter when she moves her head, a fairly pleasant sound. She sits down at the large table that fills the room. Sorry to keep you waiting, especially when I got nothing for you. I don't like to disappoint the lady's friends in the bar, in case you all start making a scene. That's not good for business. But as I say, I got nothing for you. You can check back tomorrow if you like.
(Thank you! Do we know where the temple of Lathander is?)
“It’s been a long day, thank you for your trouble. Tell her that a friend who used to be a bore and who now is absolutely soaring to be back home will come by tomorrow. Oh, actually, one question for you - where’s the High Road Charter Company operating these days? Been a while since I’ve been back in town.”
She orders a pint to be nice and tips double the cost of the drink for the trouble. While she drinks it, she looks around at the clientele to see if she gets a vibe that these people seem to be the type to work for any of those groups or another group that she would know from her time in Waterdeep. One of the gangs, maybe?
She is perfectly happy to head back to the inn, draw a hot bath, eat a big dinner, and sleep like the dead. She’d have a long causal look out the front window of the Crumbling Walls during dinner to see if anyone seems to have taken an interest in the place (if they were followed or someone’s keeping watch), and ask the halfling she talked to earlier to flag any interest anyone takes in the group, an extra gold for his troubles in doing so. Also she’d volunteer to keep a watch overnight.
A bit frustrated at the day, striking out with the Harpers, the Gauntlet people, and whoever Jamna works for. And missing the chance to find the Temple of Lathander or the High Street place and Caron. But she did free a pixie from slavery with an honestly clear conscience departure from her former employer. And followed the cultists to Waterdeep without being killed. So that’s nice.
To Nate's request for the letter. This journey has asked us to work outside the lines of what we are accustomed to. I do know however, that wars are fought with both weapons and intelligence. There are so many moving parts behind the scenes that percolate and come together. We've trusted these methods through the caravan. And I always follow orders. Maybe its not smart to but its a code I follow. So if she says do no open the letter. We do not open the letter.
Jalt would have went with Soar.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Jalt Rhogar - Dragonborn Cleric (9)
Thank you for the map! That really helps. So obviously Nate wouldn't have walked back to the Merchant's Retreat. He would've stayed at the Crumbling Walls. He would've bought the biggest plate of food he could and would spend money on the most comfortable room. If Soar returned before Nate was in his room, I am sure they would've discussed the pixie incident and Nate would've asked Soar if she met up with Jamna or not, and also about fey lore and likely talking with everyone else too... until he got tired retired to his room for the night.
To Jalt: "Alright. I understand. Then hopefully we can at least see what's written when we deliver it to Alatus in the temple like Soar mentioned. Maybe she will open it in front of us. Otherwise, we're sending a message to Ontharr, from us, that we don't even know the contents of. Hell, I don't even remember talking to Coral about what she was going to write. And she seemed off to me. Anyhow, maybe I've been on the road too long and this is all making me crazy... yes hopefully it's just that."
Soar would talk about the pixie incident until her eyelids dropped. She has no idea what happened, and wishes she knew more about fey royalty. Starting with that fey have royalty. When all this business with the cult sorts itself out she hopes she has some time to explore it a bit. She asks Nate if he know anything about it. She also tells him she really really likes his true voice and is glad that Cowboy Nate has ridden off into the sunset.
The Charter Company? The Neverwintans?, the innkeeper of the Defiant Kobold answers. They have an office up in the Field Ward, near where they gather for their expeditions. There's one due to set off day after tomorrow, or so I hear. She will give you directions if you ask.
Soar returns to the main common room and enjoys a drink. You can make an Insight check for the clientele.
(If Soar, Jalt or anyone else wants to ask questions or do something in the Defiant Kobold, you can do so... but we'll skip ahead now.)
Soar and the others return to the Crumbling Walls, so you are all together once again, and free to talk. :)
The halfling politely refuses your coin to watch for watchers, but agrees to let you know if someone starts asking about you.
Soar is keeping watch overnight. If she does so alone, she will take a point of exhaustion. If at least two others want to join in, then they (and Soar) should give me Perception checks.
Elspeth, you mentioned wanting to cast spells before sleeping - please confirm exactly what you want to do.
From what you've discussed, it looks like the plan for tomorrow is:
Temple of Lathander in the Castle Ward, to send a message to Ontharr Magic Shop - you don't know exactly where to find one A powerful spellcaster to help the elf who was transform into a stag Temple of Kelemvor, to meet Soar's old companions Back to the Defiant Kobold, to see if Jamna left information for you
Feel free to change this around, and add more things, as we go, so long as you finalise each point before we reach it in the story...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Soar, I barely knew that fairies... I mean... pixies existed. I thought they were make believe. I mean, they never came and spoke to me in the forest where I grew up. Let alone them having royalty! Anyways I'm glad all of that ended well for you. And that it made you happy. Oh yeah, cowboy Nate has definitely ridden off into the sunset."Nate blushes as he remembers back to how ridiculous he must've sounded.
"Although guys, I still don't think the cultists are on to me like they are on to all of you."
Nate would absolutely help Soar with the watches. Not the first one though :)
My apologies if I missed it, but where are the cultists wagons situated in the city? Or do we not exactly know that since we didn't follow them? Perhaps another thing for tomorrow would be for one of us to seek them out directly (likely Nate), to walk near them, make sure they are still in the city, perhaps see if Carlon is also around, and ask him what, if anything, happened last night as he and Jamna pursed them.
The last you know, the cultists were headed towards the place in the Field Ward where the High Road Charter Company meets to gather before expeditions north set out. You have a vague idea of where that is, and could probably get directions if you ask.
