Hey, look, I don't want any trouble, I just want my stuff. The half -elf holds his hands up in a placating gesture, then flinches, looks over his shoulder at the closed door. Then he approaches you slowly and starts to whisper. I don't know where their taking their shit, or anything about a trap door. I was planning on making a run for it tonight, and that plan's not changed. He points to the bag in Nate's hands. I just want my... that. And not to die, of course. If you're going after those madmen, then good luck to you. They're crazy, you know that? Keep talking about their dragon goddess, on and on. It's weird. He grins nervously. I really should've left last night, I had a really bad feeling too.
"So you're running away from the cult? Why are you even involved with them in the first place? Where are you running to? And how did you get what's in this bag?"
Can Nate get a sense if this guy is telling the truth? Especially about him running away.
I'm a thief. Okay, look, there was a group of these idiots with a big wagon full of crates coming through town and I took a look when they weren't paying attention, and there was all this gold and jewels and stuff. Things like you've never seen! His whispers take on a frantic tone as he keeps looking behind him at the closed door. Look, meet me tonight, in the stables at midnight. It's too dangerous to stay here. You need to get gone too, before one of them comes back and finds you here. And bring my stuff. He looks at Nub, then Nate, then turns and slips silently out through the door. (Assuming you let him)
Nate, you sense that he's the sort of person who is very good at lying, and does it almost by habit. There's no particular sense that was lying now, but he was clearing nervous and skittish.
Nate moves slightly and also nods to the tortle to let the half elf out. He doesn't say another word to him, and then waits a few moments and then motions Nub to get out as he also leaves the room, with the bag of jewels pocketed.
Nate would remain silent until he felt that they were both clear and safe from the room, and back in their room. (not sure if Nub would follow Nate back to the room?) Once they got back, Nate would take a peek into the bag to confirm what jewels and coins are in the bag (to get a better understanding of its contents), and then say to Nub "Ok that was... intense. I don't usually do that type of thing... it's just... I saw red when I thought he was a cultist. Anyhow... I don't think we need to worry about that thug ratting us out, and I think he's just a legitimate thief and not one of them. So... I don't think he's going to be able to tell us anything else that we don't already know about the cultist scum."
Nate's look then changes to a very serious one, and he also cracks a small, perhaps devilish grin and asks him straight up "So... Nub... how do you feel about this bag? Would you have an issue with keeping it? And... I'm not sure we should tell Soar and Jalt about any of this... just yet. They might not... understand."
It's getting on for late afternoon. Jalt and Soar should be back soon, though they didn't give you a time to expect them.
Nate and Nub return to your shared room and close the door behind you. If anyone say you and the thief talking, you don't know about it. :)
The gems and jewels are all small, easily concealed, and are the type of treasure that the cultists from Greenest were hauling. With time, you would estimate their value at 1,400 gold.
oufff... Nate is having an internal moral dilemma after noticing that the jewels are likely from the Greenest townsfolk. He will not tell Nub that piece of information, yet, and will await his response to his questions.
Also tapping his feet quite rapidly, stressed that Jalt and Soar are going to come in any minute.
Jamna doesn't really have much of a response - she seems to want to have the discussion of the details when you are all together. You can make an Insight check on her if you wish.
And eventually, and without further incident, as the afternoon is getting on... Nate, you see Jalt, and Soar, and then Jamna, all entering the room. It will soon be time for Nub to head to the kitchen to help Pete with his cooking, if you decide to do that again today.
Nub does follow Nate back to the room, and answers the questions "I don't usually go in for stealing or lying. I think we should tell the others, as meeting this supposed thief may help us because he might be able to provide more information or it may be a trap by the cultists. Either way, it may help us get to the bottom of what the cultists are up to. But don't worry, if you decide not to tell them, I wont say anything at this stage unless I am asked."
Nub also goes to Pete and says that he wont be helping out today. He doesn't give a reason, even if asked.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Soar insight: 7
"Nate, you remember Jamna. Nub, this is Jamna, who joined the caravan to Waterdeep and shares goals with us, though we work with different and yet anonymous groups. She let me know the cultists have been sneaking off north up the road in small groups. That's where they're headed. I let her know about the trap door. She's... subtle, and may have more of a chance to get in unnoticed perhaps. First off, are we good with renewing the cooperation we had on the caravan? If yes, we can plan specifics."
Soar, she looked a bit annoyed when you told her about the trapdoor. You get the feeling that she's unhappy she missed that. She hides it well, though.
Nub, Pete shrugs. Hey, whatever boy. You'll pay for your meal then. You then return to the room just as Jalt and Soar are returning.
Jamna smiles sweetly as she is introduced. Jamna Gleamsilver, Master Nub. She sits on Jalt's bed and awaits the rest of the conversation.
Wash greets Jamna and then apologises to the other three "I'm sorry, but we wont be eating for free tonight. I thought given what we know now, that my time might be better spent on things other than cooking. I was just going to have rations, though we could eat in the kitchen instead."
Nub asks Jamna "How far North have you followed the small groups of cultists? Are they following a road or heading into the wilderness?"
Oh, just a half hour or so. I didn't want to lose sight of the roadhouse. They followed the road as long as I stayed with them, but after that, who knows? Depending on what we agree, I might keep with them tomorrow. Jamna takes a waterskin from her belt and has a drink as she thinks. Not sure. The leaders are still here. The loot's still here. If they split up, I want to follow whichever gives me the best shot at learning what they're doing.
Nub ponders "I am wondering whether the trapdoor connects to a tunnel that goes to the same place that the cultists are disappearing to?" He then asks "Jamna, do you have any way of getting into the locked room with Nate that wouldn't alert the guards and cultists, or make them suspicious that anything is up? If we even knew which direction any passage went, we would be able to make better educated guesses."
You're asking if I can open a locked door, Jamna says. She stands up and walks over to Nub, and reaching up she grabs his cheek playfully. Aww, aren't you an adorable little tortle boy. Yes, sweetie, I can open a door quietly. The challenge is to get in without the guard noticing. That will require a distraction, which can certainly be arranged. We could, for example, set the stables on fire... She smiles, laughs, and then returns to where she was sitting.
Nub may be naive about some things, but he has learnt that when someone with the skills Jamna has just indicated she has pulls a move like that, that one should check that they still have their belongings. Nub subtly checks that he still has his pearl, coin pouch etc.
Nub says "From how Soar introduced you, I had no doubt that you could get into a locked room. I was hoping that you might have a way to get past the guards without needing a distraction, like being able to disappear from sight or change into a small creature like Nate. Unless the guards and cultists are not very smart, I would assume that they would likely go straight for the locked room if there was something obviously a distraction like a fire. I could be wrong though."

(No, Soar, Jalt and Jamna are out on the road.)
Nate pulls the bag away from him further.

Nub is just following Nate's lead now. If the Cultist moves past him towards Nate, Nub will slowly move towards the door to block it.
