(Oh!) Erro became quite fond of the cloak, it’s style growing on him despite having no idea what it could do. His steps seemed to feel more springy and the jaunt through the woods didn’t seem quite as arduous this time as he felt for some reason oddly suited to the area.
((Super cool item. It would go good on a Barbarian too, Lightnin, if you think Rawk would want it. My AC is already quite high, not that our enemies cared.))
Elia thanks you all, taking the potion and giving Ellis a quick embrace of thanks. She hurries back to her charges, and you see her adding the potion to a concoction of her own stewing over a fire. Minutes seem to drag on, and there is a hushed expectancy amongst the crowd. Finally, Elia seems satisfied, and starts administering the medicine to the dying warriors.
More time seems to pass so slowly then, eventually, you see the warriors beginning to stir, Joran tries to sit up and Elia gently pushes him down again. She turns to the crowd, saying nothing, though the grin on her face conveys the good news. Suddenly the gathering becomes a hub of noise, as people seem to be released from the tension.
The next few hours pass in a dizzying fashion. The news of your victory spreads through the town, and you loose count of the number of people who come up to you, offering thanks, tears often in their eyes.
Rawks father returns, going to his daughter with a look of relief - and pride on his face.
That evening, a celebration of sorts is planned. In a clearing within the village, the bodies of a half a dozen slain warriors are laid on pyres of logs and branches. Tables circle round and it seems everyone in invited. The relatives of the dead come first to pay respects, then a huge feast is started and a eulogy is extolled for the dead as the fires are lit, carrying their mortal remains away. Then things move on to happier matters, Quirin recounting the victories over the Yuan-ti by their warriors, and finally the great victory banishing the lingering shadow. Cheers rise from the crowd at this.
A little later, another cheer goes up as Elia arrives with her charges, still clearly weakened but at least able now to walk. You notice Joran is being supported by Kanush, and the two seem to be laughing together, the near loss seeming to have healed the rift between them. Kanush firmly steers Joran to sit beside Elia, who smiles her thanks. The two of them become intent, laughing and joking with each other, Elia looking more at ease to Rawk's eyes than in a long time. Perhaps an eagle eyed member of the party would catch them sharing a semi-furtive kiss when they think no-one is looking. Kanush, sitting with your party certainly catches it and gives a grin.
The other former-prisoners are also invited to the party, exchanging conversation, and Tahvo sticks close to Darion and Ellis where he can.
You all feel that though there is sadness, and weariness at a long generations old conflict, there is perhaps a sense of hope - that even though lives have been lost, that perhaps it was not in vain for the first time. For once the Dom-Rutan people can celebrate as well as mourn.
For our heroes, though they will almost certainly face danger again and the threat of the Yuan-ti remains, for tonight they can relax in whatever way they wish; surround themselves in food, drink and company as they watch the flames dance skyward and leave their concerns for another day.
I think everyone has definitely earned a LEVEL UP - you can advance your characters to level 5 now :)
Also, in gratefulness at your deeds, the village gives you each the equivalent of 250gp. You can have this really in whatever (mundane) form you would like. Darion asks for most of it in the rare components he needs to enable him to copy spells into his spell book, taking 25gp neat, and 30gp in the incense, herbs etc he needs to cast Find Familiar!
Recovering
For those of you still suffering ability drains, these can be removed by taking a day of complete rest, in which you must have at least 8 hours in sunlight (you can spread this over a number of days, but they must be consecutive days of rest)
And with that, I will hand over to Xtra! I am glad you enjoyed the adventure, even though I nearly killed you twice! I am looking forward to Xtra's story and getting back into playing Darion!
Xtra - If you want to start a New Campaign for part 3 and invite us, then I will delete my campaign (you can't change DMs in a campaign unfortunately!)
Tempest wills himself to be happy while the village celebrates the victory over the Lingering Shadow and the yuan-ti. He finds it hard to suppress his anxiety over his mother and the probable war of attrition against Fenthasa and her armies. Despite the heavy burden on his mind he takes a few hours to connect with his companions and some of the villagers. While enjoying a piece of meat he'd glance over to Rawk dancing by the campfire with the other villagers. As the amber firelight flickers and shadows pass over her form he'd feel a strange fluttering in his stomach. He'd ponder a moment and take another bite thinking it was hunger and look around to the others each enjoying the celebration in their own way. His gaze would occasionally return to rawk as if curious and each time the feeling would return.
Over the next few days, Tempest will spend a day sleeping in the grove where a ray of sun shines through the canopy to recover his strength. That night he would spend casting Plant Growth for 8 hours to boost the land's fertility. He'd spend some time in the grove with Elia, aiding in whatever way he could but also spend a good amount of time with his companions. Through whatever circumstance he'd always end up hanging out with Rawk. Whether it was going out to hunt for food or scout with others he would somehow end up unconsciously winding up with her. He would never pry into her privacy but would tag along and nurture their friendship.
Everyone else: We'll say you get 6 days to rest and recover in the village. During that time you can rest to regain lost ability scores, go on a scouting mission to potentially learn more about the area (result based on 2-3 skill/ability checks), have conversations with the locals, etc. The village is your oyster for the moment.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(O_O) (@Xtra- Interesting... @JustBrad- Nah you keep the cloak. I can already swoop in on enemies. ;) )
Insight: 17
Rawk will fly over to her father and embrace him tightly... perhaps too tightly as he coughs and lets out a small kaaw in pain. He doesn't fight the hug though, he would be overjoyed at her return. She'd tell him all about the journey there, the city, and the battles happily flapping about. After the funeral ceremony, Rawk would celebrate joyously with the other villagers, spinning and fluttering her wings in the firelight. As the first day came to a close she'd make her way through the canopy of the village and arrive at her tree house home. Her room was more of an enclosed tree branch with a small chest, stand for her axe and large window for her to fly in and out of. She'd nuzzle herself bringing her head into her chest while drawing her wings tight around her body and softly coo as she slept peacefully for the first time in a few days.
Over the 6 days, she'd spend the first resting in the sun to regain her fortitude and make sure her father was alright. As the days went on she'd welcome the presence of her companions and assist in a couple scouting missions. She'd also consult the local blacksmith and procure a Longsword that has been silvered, a dagger and a shield. She preferred her axe but saw the benefit it added to Erro. She would still carry her greataxe but settled that the pros of having options was worth the extra weight. Despite Tempest's increased attention, Rawk is unaware of any ulterior motive and continues to cheerfully converse and interact with him as she normally would.
(Added silvered longsword, dagger and shield to my inventory. Figured that'd be between 50-120 gold for everything depending on the cost of silvering.)
Darion will spend some time with his spell book over the next few days, copying a spell from the spellbook he had found, as well as making progress on a couple he had already been researching himself.
He is polite and cordial with the other former prisoners, though is concerned and caring towards Tahvo, who must be returned to his family when possible. He is quite reserved, often being quiet and watchful on the outside of things, reflecting that he hardly knows any of these people. However, he is more open and friendly particularly with Daner, Kanush and Elia who he got to know more over the time the rest of the party were gone. Kanush in particular is someone he spends more time with, several times drinking with him in the evenings as they swap stories of loves lost.
He will, however, make a point of talking to Ellis who he is most concerned about, approaching him on one occasion and asking "How are you bearing up Ellis? I'm told you put the lives of your companions before your own on a number of occasions. I admire your bravery - but be careful of giving so much to others. This world is full of those who see that as weakness, and would take advantage!"
On another occasion, he would make a point of approaching Erro, someone he knows barely at all. As ever, Darion remains deeply suspicious of newcomers, especially ones they just ran into in the jungle. They may for now have mutual enemies, but then what?
"So, Erro, what are your plans now? I wasn't sure I fully understood what you were doing so far from home? It must have been such a shock for you to run into slavers from your own country, such an unfortunate coincidence" he will try and discern what Erro's reaction to this is, if there is anything that gives concern.
Regarding rewards, Erro will seek the following equipment. He'll use 100gp worth of the reward to request that his trusty (yeah right) rapier be silvered. Then, a couple bags of caltrops (2gp), a bell on a string (1gp), a crowbar (2gp), a grappling hook (2gp), a steel mirror (5gp), and a 10ft pole (5cp). The remaining 137 he will take as gold if possible. If the next leg of the adventure is such he might be tempted to buy a horse or a donkey!
Erro will watch the exchanges between Tempest and Rawk with amusement if he notices them. In general, Erro will not be bashful about joining in any festivities and he will spend as much time as he can, when he is not at work, enjoying the simple pleasures of the village. He will spend plenty of time drinking whatever brews the old storyteller could cook up, and listen to his stories. Sometimes he'd take it a little too far and have to be helped to bed on some nights. Perhaps he was trying to avoid thinking about something, or maybe more likely overindulging. Erro naturally feels the closest kinship with Tempest, Rawk, and Ellis, and he would spend most of his free time hanging out with them.
Feeling perfectly healthy (not taking any CON damage) and fitting the bill, Erro would have taken part in every available scouting party, hoping to do his part in what he hoped he could make a new home.
"My plans?" Erro hesitates. "I... don't take much stock in plans, friend. Fate has a way of unraveling the best made plans, so I go where the winds of fate take me. I hope that they will let me rest here for some time!" "...It was an unfortunate coincidence indeed. That wasn't in my plan. I am away from my home because my home needs help. She is too far gone, and I had hoped that help would come from abroad."
A 24 insight would easily discern that Erro is withholding something and it would be easy to lead him out of it with such a high roll! "Truthfully, my learned friend, between you and me, and please keep this between you and me," Erro knocks back another drink and siddles up uncomfortably close, "I suppose that I am a bit of a coward. I didn't want to be a slaver, but I didn't want to be a slave either, you get me?" He looks out at the happy, bucholic scene pensively, "I am so sorry for those I left behind... but look at this place. I don't need to remember here. One day I'll go back to Calimshan... but does it hurt to lay low?"He laughs at the thought of his last week as counting as 'laying low.' "What about you, mate? We may be here together in this little village a while. What's your story? How did you get tangled up with the Yuan-ti and what's your aim now?" he says as he hands Darion a drink.
For the rewards, Ellis would like to get two healer's kits (10 gp), a grappling hook (2 gp), a 10ft pole (5 cp), a bell on a string (1 gp), a hood lantern (5 gp), hempen rope (1 gp), and 5 torches (5 cp).
Ellis will spend the first day resting in the day to recover from this whole ordeal. Then the rest of his days he will spend hanging out with his friends and many of the others in the village, singing and playing his lyre for everyone while getting to know everyone else better. He will also make sure to hang out with Tahvo a lot too, being like a big brother and wanting to help him get home to his family much like how he wants to go home. He had heard Darion and his concerns, nodding back. "I'm doing much better now. Thank you. I know, but we might not have made it if I hadn't helped the others first and I just want to make sure that everyone else is safe. I can't do much in terms of physical combat or using spells to damage enemies, so it's the least I can do if I'm able to support others with all my power." Ellis would say back to him, smiling happily.
All- If any or all of you want to purchase one of the empty homes the villagers can restore it for 52 gold worth of labor and materials. The furniture will be simple but will provide you your own home or the group's own home. Otherwise you will all remain stationed in the visitor's center, except for Rawk. Though the village may have much in regards to simple materials, coinage is quite low, or not as valuable a commodity here. You assume bartering is the main form of trade. The most gold coinage you can receive from your 250gp lot is 75gp each.
Erro- Make two survival checks and an Athletics or Acrobatics check.
Most of the locals welcome the blissful enthusiasm from Erro, while some find his debauchery a bit... taxing. Nevertheless, you make your way around the village assisting in the scouting missions and you try to learn more about the surrounding area.
Ellis- Make a performance check and an Athletics or Acrobatics check.
Darion & Ellis- Each of you make a persuasion check or one of you make a persuasion check with advantage.
Tahvo greets both of you warmly and asks many questions of your battles, as any kid would. Throughout your prolonged stay at the village you can see the peaceful living has calmed his anxiety somewhat. He does still shed a few tears occasionally when he thinks of his family.
Rawk- Make two survival checks with advantage and an Athletics or Acrobatics check. Silvering cost is 100gp for a total of 127.
As each day passes and Ellis continues to sing and play, you begin to see a shift in the morale of the villagers. The high from the battle should have long worn off but something about Ellis' performance stirs the heartstrings. The villagers each display a communal sense of renewed hope that gives a spark in each eye.
The supplies you requested are all relatively easy to pack except for the grappling hook and pole. It takes you a few unsuccessful tries with the grappling hook suffering an annoying pinch on your thumb, but you manage to successfully figure out a neat and efficient way to fit all the new items in your backpack, except for the pole. You watch Tempest walking around with his staff and eventually figure out a manageable way to use it in a similar fashion, though on occasion it gets caught in the lower branches of trees.
As you and Darion continue to nurture Tahvo, he eventually opens up about his family a bit more. "They're from a village I think near here. It's called, Kainui (Ka-new-e). It's much smaller than this village and it was around the water. Do you think we could go there one day?"he asks wiping a tear from his eye.
"Yes, of course we can go there. I'm sure it must be a wonderful village." Ellis would have said back to Tahvo reassuringly, hugging and comforting the little boy with a smile.
Erro would have been first in line to purchase a house. To him, this place was lovely, secluded, and stood a fighting chance against the Yaun-ti. He would have spent time settling in (inviting any of his friends to make it their domicile as well). He would have asked Tempest for help getting a small garden started with a Druidic jump-start. “It’s late in the season, after all.”
Darion smiles a little at Erro's confession. Though he doesn't fully trust Erro yet, that had the ring of truth. Darion will sit back a little, making sure he is not drinking to much.
"There is no shame in running from a hopeless battle. But I think you will find the rest of the world only a little better. Mind, having run into the Yuan-ti again, it makes me appreciate that for all their duplicitous, self-serving scheming the 'nobles' that run my home are still at least human. Some even may have a redeeming feature or two!" he smiles cynically, though perhaps not totally. "I was only young when the Yuan-ti were expelled from home, I had thought them more beaten than they appear."
He takes a few more sips, then more seriously leans towards Erro "Be careful though in putting your hands in 'fate', for in truth there is no such thing. It is a story people tell themselves to explain and justify what is. And often used by those in power to control those beneath them; 'I was fated to rule! The gods raised me to this position!'" as he says this, he puts on an exaggerated and contemptuous upper-class accent "No, more often than not it is simple luck - good and bad - that determines the course of our lives. Skill, and the knowledge of luck - embracing it even - might help influence that luck a little. But to believe in fate leaves you vulnerable to be buffeted helpless and uncontrolled by the world."
Darion leans back, smiles slightly "Apologies for the lecture, I fear I sometimes sound like my father."
When Erro throws the question back at him, Darion would look intently at him for a moment, then figure there is little harm in being mostly open "I was on a research expedition for my father, gathering up tomes and information from the coastal towns. I was travelling with a merchant and her husband when the Yuan-ti attacked. They killed the guards, then decided the merchant was to old to take back, so slit their throats in some ritual." his voice hardens, anger dancing in his eyes "I did not know them well, but they talked of their children, their pride and fears. They did not deserve such a fate. After that I was dragged inland, ended up prisoners with the others."
He pauses, thoughtful. What is his aim? ultimately to return home, of course, perhaps even to help these people. Perhaps, if he made a name for himself, then perhaps... well perhaps things might be different. Erro would notice Darion reach up and hold the locket that dangles from his neck, not really realising he is doing it.
"For the moment, I think, I aim to stay alive! To get home as well, and perhaps kill some more of these Yuan-ti creatures." he settles on saying, and Erro would see there might be other things lying beneath the surface, but Darion keeps those to his chest, and instead orders another round for him and Erro.
With Ellis
Darion nods and smiles, of all his new companions Ellis is the only one he has decided he can trust. Though bards may be accomplished actors, good at hiding the truth, Darion doubts that anyone up to no good would not deliberately put others before themselves so often. Still, always be cautious he would caution himself.
"Well, still be careful Ellis. But it is good that you are doing better, and whatever you believe about yourself being a burden, the people here see you as anything but! As I think do all of those who have travelled with you."
He would pat Ellis on the shoulder and wander off, though would aid Ellis in trying to help Tahvo come out of himself. When he hears about Kainui, he will agree with Ellis about getting Tahvo home. What he doesn't say out loud is how safe that place might be, and whether it has withstood the ravages of the Yuan-ti over the last weeks.
Erro nods along, trying to follow Darion, sipping a rich, dark roasty stout (or the jungle equivalent) and smoking the closest thing the town had to tobacco or pipeweed, looking out upon the village in twilight. A pleasant atmosphere. He chuckles, “Maybe you’re right about fate, who knows?” He stretches his arms and settles back in his seat, comfortably. “But since we can’t know which is true, why not go with what feels best? You see, Darion, if fate is in control, then the pressure is off. I can enjoy this drink, this weather, and this night, and I don’t need to agonize myself strategizing about my next move,” he says as he notices Darion slowing down his drink, perceiving him to be the type to always want to be in control. “I simply need to play the hand that fate has dealt me. No proving myself, no second-guessing myself, and no agonizing over what-could-have-been. It is what it is.” He smirks, noticing the tense shoulders, “Maybe you should give fate a try sometime.”
Erro furrows his brow at Darion’s story and frowns. “Fate or luck, that is rotten, friend. I’m sorry to hear that story.” As the next round is served he lifts his cup to cheers, “To staying alive!” “And another to skewering more snakes!”
Rawk would take a few hours in the 5th or 6th day to find Elia and inquire about Jaron. Though she probably saw Jaron roaming about the village she knew Elia would give a straight answer. She had always gone to Elia with questions, mainly because Elia wasn't afraid of giving an answer. Her father tried to shelter her and most of the elders knew her father's opinion so they tried to do the same. "How's Jaron? He looked pretty rough when we arrived but seemed in pretty good spirits during the party. Is he going to make a full recovery... or...?" she stops herself from thinking negatively and looks intently at Elia for an answer. After Elia's reply she'd inquire about druids and how Tempest was able to change his shape into an animal. "You're a druid, right? During our journey to fight the Lingering Shadow Tempest changed into a bunch of different animals. Do all druids have that ability or is that special to him?"
Ellis- Tahvo hugs you and Darion saying, "Really? Oh thank you. When can we go?" his eager childlike enthusiasm showing through. He hops up and down and begins to pack his things excitdly.
Erro-
The first few scouting trips catch you off guard. Though you traveled this jungle with your companions to Dom-Sorn, the jungle you traverse on your missions seems exactly the same. Perhaps it's the struggle you have with your new items. Your backpack seems to be a bit uneven and you pause to readjust the caltrops that poke into your back. You nearly become lost and have to rush to regroup with your party. After a few tries you find a suitable packing setup and seem to have a bit more success studying the area. As you continue to go out on missions you begin to get a bit more familiar with the area north of the village. You begin to recognize the subtle marking on trees that guide you back to the village. (You can now travel up to a mile north of the village without needing a survival check.)
You select a stone and wood abode that is tucked between a trio of trees and seems to be overgrown with ivy. The foundation is solid and there's a large amount of dust but it's yours. Between Tempest and Elia they quickly subdue the vines and manage the dust with the work of a few spells. The entire village seems to come alive as various people chip in to clean, rebuild and furnish the home. Though not complete, the house is now livable. (It has 2 rooms, one on either side of the main living room with a stone fireplace to keep warm in the cold wet winters and a small lockable wooden chest where you can store items.)
Darion- (Let me know if you want a home as well. I saw you mentioned it in your conversation but didn't want to assume.)
Rawk-
You are used to these woods and easily recall your bearings on the earlier missions. Being already familiar with the south and north you begin to branch out to the east and west of the village beyond the farmland. These scouting missions were typically more dangerous and your father hardly ever allowed you to participate in them. You easily handle the additional weight of your new equipment and are able to glide through the air just as easily as before. Despite the extra weight you are able to focus and add additional knowledge of the area under your belt. (You are now able to travel within a mile of the village without making a survival check.)
Elia looks at you with a gentle smile, "Jaron is healing up quickly, though I think the renewed friendship with Kanush has helped more than the potion did. He's very happy and does his best to hide the pain that still lingers. It will pass eventually but he can't eat much right now without it coming back up. Whatever poison the yuan-ti have developed is quite powerful." she says as her face turns a bit grim. "I'm working with Tempest on a way to combat it but I don't know how much progress we can make without having a sample of the poison..." she pauses as you ask about Tempest and her smile returns. "Yes, I too have that ability though perhaps not with the same skill. We are each connected with nature in our own way. Being a child of the grove in Dom-Sorn I learned to use the power of the elements to conjure creatures and aid in the growth of plants. It's partly how we've managed to remain fed during some of the long sieges by the yuan-ti. Tempest has some of the same capabilities but we are each unique in our skills and how we use them."
Rawk's head bobs up and down excitedly as Elia speaks intrigued by the topic of conversation. She cocks her head when Elia mentions a sample of the poison and thinks to herself for a moment. An idea pops into her head but she's polite and waits until Elia is finished discussing druids before chirping out, "What if we went on a scouting run to get the poison? Maybe one of the yuan-ti will be carrying some." her head continuing to bob up and down while she processed the information about druids. "Okay, what about Darion? I've only met him in passing but he seems nice, kind of shy though. I know he helped with the magic stuff around the village, is he a druid too?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
With Erro
Darion leans back, taking in Erro's philosophy, which sounds to him like a gilded trap - works well until it goes wrong. Still, they seem to have led them to some of the same conclusions. He decides to shelve the debate for another day, sitting back and relaxing with his drink "Well, I can agree on accepting things are as they are!" he raises his cup to Erro's toast on staying alive and killing Yuan-ti. He would stay for the a while, presumably chatting about lighter things, perhaps asking Erro about his homeland.
Houses
In terms of houses, Darion would offer to go halves with either Ellis or Erro (with a preference to go with Ellis) as he couldn't afford the repair on it's own. He would look for a comfortable room where he could sleep, but could also fit a table and a shelf to put books on, where he could do his studies. He likes keeping the place tidy, and makes cleaning easy by use of prestidigitation. If neither of these options pans out, he would be happy in the central hall, but again ask for a table and a secure chest to store things.
Tahvo
He is happy to see the lad's excitement, but when Tahvo was not around would make enquiries about Kainui, and what was known about it's current state. If needed investigation: 13
Scouting / prep
Darion is a city-boy at heart, so doesn't particularly look for additional supplies beyond the basics (e.g. water-proof clothing, boots, water-skins), nor would he particularly think to scout out the forest, but would be able to volunteer if needed or if there was trouble.

(O_O) (@Xtra- Interesting... @JustBrad- Nah you keep the cloak. I can already swoop in on enemies. ;) )

One day I'll go back to Calimshan... but does it hurt to lay low?" He laughs at the thought of his last week as counting as 'laying low.' "What about you, mate?

Ellis- Make a performance check and an Athletics or Acrobatics check.
Darion & Ellis- Each of you make a persuasion check or one of you make a persuasion check with advantage.
Rawk- Make two survival checks with advantage and an Athletics or Acrobatics check. Silvering cost is 100gp for a total of 127.

Ellis-
"Yes, of course we can go there.

With Erro

Erro-
Darion- (Let me know if you want a home as well. I saw you mentioned it in your conversation but didn't want to assume.)
Rawk-
Rawk's head bobs up and down excitedly as Elia speaks intrigued by the topic of conversation.
