Gerrard Feldren - Human Noble in Ghosts of Saltmarsh
Kerric Brightblade - Elven Warrior in "Apocalypse"
Of course Maxine was there (it's not like she could leave the boat anyway). By now she almost got used to sailing (or, better say, to "staying on the boat in the quiet waters"). Clear sky, cool breeze, no insects, no predators of any kind in visible range, no need to struggle through swamps and impassible jungles (no need to walk at all and yet moving forward!) - what can be better? No wander sailors on the shores are always so eager to return to the ships!
The idea to share knowledge yet again was good, though. After some peace and quiet (Maxine was watching Captain and crew - not to truly learn sailing, but to sort of familiarize herself with the subject) accumulated energy needed some outlets.
"Potion making... I mean, I'd love to show all I can, but it's a combination of knowledge, skills and luck. Firs part - not a big problem, though, mechanic of magic is a concept not everyone appreciates, skills - that need practice, a lot, and I do not mean only repetition, but ... It's like cooking - anyone can mix few ingredients, but not every mix will be eatable afterwords. But we sure can try!"
So, if Shae was interested, the plants - collected or those they only saw before - were re-analyzed from every possible angle and experimented with, as a demonstration of all possibilities modern Alchemy could offer.
Shae would be happy to have the Professor copy Remove Curse from her Tome to his Spellbook. She would browse what she could understand from the Professor's spellbook, even if it was to familiarize herself with his repertoire for battle. It was also great insight for her to understand the weave better and how gifted wizards like Snively are to be able to manipulate it.
One night while she's out meditating to commune/strengthen her connection with Kam, Shae would be curious to see if the Professor's mirror would have anything to show them from her Tome.
Maxine:
Of course Shae was interested. She was particularly attracted to the parallel Maxine drew to cooking. It added some perspective. The scholar was more than happy to apprentice Maxine as she re-analyzed and experimented in what ways she could. She'd be sure to invite Fang to accompany them if he was interested and would like to contribute any insight. The warlock was attentive and would observe, listen, ask questions, sketch and note down everything Maxine would dictate to her as she worked her skills in Alchemy. She would then relay the information back to Maxine for review and finalization for entry into the Professor's Gazetteer.
Fang:
In company with the Alchemy studies, Shae would set aside the appropriate time necessary to complete the herbalist and medic review and update of the Gazetteer with Fang. She'd methodically consult with him on every plant, flower, root, leaf etc. that they have come across, as she did with Maxine, and maybe any others that he may be aware of that they haven't come by yet. Engaging in further discussions and analytics of the plants, she would ensure a detailed and thorough documentation from descriptions, to diagrams, to healing properties, to locations where found on the map, to other uses etc. Shae would be sure to contribute what knowledge the Grung shared as well, combining it with their collective knowledge.
Some point during the discussion, the conversation would bridge off on the materials used for crafting and enhancements. This was additional knowledge and skills that Shae felt could be a great reference or even reminder of what Fang has already been able to create, and what he could potentially do in the future. Shae would include it in a subsection of the Gazetteer. This is when the warlock would engage Fang in a conversation about shields and armour improvements. Could there be potential in the future for him to assist her as he had the others?
Berrus:
Shae had strongly been considering it, but had not found the courage to ask. So when Berrus would make his announcement to offer training, her ears would perk up. She'd stand back and wait to see if any of the others would take up their protector on his offer first, waiting her turn. Eventually though, the warlock would step forward, albeit a little timidly, but excited all the same. She'd approach Berrus with a shy smile and a small wave.
"Will you take me?" Shae'd ask. "I'd like to learn some basics if I can." Yes, training would be an excuse to dedicate time to spend with Berrus, that she could not deny. But she truly did desire to learn from him. The warlock first and foremost wanted to improve her defenses and perhaps add additional skills to her repertoire in case she ever found herself in close combat without her magic. As a student trainee, Shae would indeed respect what he had to offer in teaching her. And she knew what she'd be learning could not happen over night. It may not happen over the course of this sailing journey. Mastery probably took five times that for each skill she'd hope to learn from the warrior. But she was willing to commit the time, if Berrus was.
Shae wasn't thinking short term.
(There was some light OOC discussions on training with Staves and/or Short Swords. Perhaps Shields(wooden?) and/or Medium Armour for improved defenses?)
"The spear will be good fer basic stances and movements."
To Shae. "Maybe a little spear work but nae sparring wi it yet"
Berrus runs Shae through some basic stance and footwork drills. Occasionally stopping to instruct or gently move her to a correct position with his hands
As Shae applies the crushed flowers, they feel cool and soothing on the skin. Although further tests might be necessary, you get the sense that these flowers could have analgesic or anti-inflammatory properties. The fragrant leaves give of a minty scent as you crush them, but the application to the skin yields no particular change. As Shae looks back over the specimens of the tri-flower, she notices that the samples of the sap had thickened and blackened, to the point where now, the sap almost resembles the Professor's inks.
Shae would check in with Fang from time to time when he's fishing to stock up on fresh treats to have on hand for Mushu.
Training with Berrus
Feeling Berrus' eyes search her up and down, she'd swallow to fight back the heat rising to her face. Returning his stare, she'd present her arms forward, then back, before taking a few steps to turn all around and face him once again. Shae wasn't strong, and she wasn't the quickest, but she was lean with stamina. She held her own, and the map of scars across her skin told those stories. And Berrus was there for all of it. The warlock sported severe claw marks on her left shoulder and down the length of both arms. And where those faded, there were a mix-matched pattern of laceration scars from her elbows to hands, including the inside of her palms. These would look all too familiar to Berrus, as he sustained similar crystal damage to his legs as well. Then, beneath her right clavicle were the two arrow puncture wounds. She stood there, a survivor. But now, she wanted to more than to just survive.
Shae would offer the most confident nod she could muster as she'd accept the spear, thanking Fang.
At first, Shae's footing was unsure and her body rigid from nerves but when Berrus would step in to instruct her, she'd relax from his voice and her body would reciprocate, responding to his hands correcting her. She would ground herself with more certainty, finding comfort in her improvement and appreciating his continued encouragement throughout her learning process.
Yes yes. Ye have the moves to use a staff effectively. Ive seen a master o tha staff take down three sword bearers wi'out a scratch. We just nee tah get ye a good one an i ken see ye bein a master yerself"
Shae did feel some self-doubt melt away at Berrus' words. She didn't have to use a sword to defend herself. If she could do it with the underrated staff.
A mischievous smirk would grow across her face before she'd gently hip check him to step away with a few of the movements he just taught her, leading to a flourish of the spear and her playfully poking him in the chest with the butt end. "See me be a master of knocking you flat on your back." She'd wink. A soft chuckle would then leave her lips, knowing full well he'd have her down on this deck if he willed it, should they ever spar. She hoped he wouldn't go too easy on her once she started to get the hang of it.
"Thanks, really appreciate it. But I think I'll stick to my crossbow and..." she wiggled her fingers searching for the right word, "... other means. If I have to fight in close quarters - I failed so bad, that dying might be more merciful." Maxine smiled showing she is not serious (not that much anyway).
Shae couldn’t help but beam with a smile when Berrus would laugh along, suggest a firm time, and invite Maxine to join. Although Maxine passed on the offer, Shae was content all the same that the option was there should she desire to train together. She’d try not to dwell too much on the comment about failing so bad if she landed in close combat. It was not a perspective she had considered for herself and wondered if she was foolish to think otherwise.
Shae would nod firmly to Berrus, agreeing on a time that best suited their schedules.
Compared to the travel in the jungle, the coast now flies by. Thanks to Fang's fishing, you are able to keep sailing until your fresh water reserves are used up, and you only have to land on the coast around late afternoon of the second day. Bertrand in particular shows an interest in fishing, and soon, between Fang and Bertrand, you usually have a few fishing lines trailing the ship around all hours of the day.
Berrus and Shae are both busy helping out with duties around the ship, and the crew is gladly showing you the ropes- literally in the case of knots and the rigging. Together with the workouts and Berrus' teaching, Shae can definitely feel herself toughen up, and Berrus is glad to be able to use his strength for all their sake, even when his shield isn't needed. When not working with the captain to navigate the ship or helping to keep tabs on their groups' supplies as a stand-in quartermaster or working on her fighting with Berrus, Shae was busy to add to the Professor's Gazetteer, happily comparing notes with Maxine, Fang, and the Professor. The latter is taking the relative calm and quiet of the two days on sea to further his studies and complete his notes on their journey, as well as new magical musings he has had along the way. Together with Maxine and Fang, he is busying himself with documenting the arcane traditions of the lizardfolk and the amazing properties of some of the local flora. Whenever he's not resting or working on his studies, the Professor is making sure to provide a stiff gale to push them towards their destination a little faster.
Maxine enjoyed the sense of getting closer to civilization, and she enjoyed the ability to relax a little and enjoy the sunshine and the breeze for once. Discussing the finer points of her potions and herbailistic discoveries with the Professor got her excited about all that they had learned in the jungle and helping around the ship gave her something to do when she needed a distraction from the notes.
As you land on shore almost exactly two days later, the atmosphere is far more relaxed, and you all have recovered from the worst of the fatigue and the exertions of the jungle. Making sure that you can keep sailing for as long as possible, you gather all empty containers that you can to head inland in search of a source of water. If things went well, you should be able to get back to the boat within a couple hours, and by the evening be back to sailing towards Mezro.
Who is going to search for water and who is staying with the ship?
