(Hit Dice if only short rest: 24)
During the party’s rest, the thoughts that Rhayna was trying to keep at bay, slowly started to crawl back. She fell asleep, and she dreamed that she left their hiding spot, and started dissecting the dead Minotaurs. She was elated that she was finally able to get her hands on a corpse. She even dreamed that she was able to animate one of them. She was about to jump for joy, but she woke up. “Ohh. It was only a dream…”
Upon arriving at the dark metal tower, she finds it intriguing, and starts to draw it in her Journal. While doing that, she wonders if she has ever read about something like this, and checks with Kirin about what he thinks.

The drow mage walks slowly around the tower at a safe distance (not all the way around though, as it literally sits on the edge of the cliff). His response to Kirin is that the tower is not of any construction he is familiar with, and he has never seen any quite like it. Stone towers are common enough, but one made entirely of metal? Clearly his long experience doesn't extend to all the same areas as the surface dwellers, because although neither Rhayna or Kirin have seen a real-life example, both recognise it as fitting the description of a rather rare magical artifact they have read about known as Daern’s instant fortress.

Pax walks up and looks through an arrow slit. If she must she climbs up the side a ways. Once she can see through, she casts misty step to appear within and looks around.

Peeking through the arrow slits into the second storey, Pax sees an empty room with a trapdoor in the floor as well as a ladder going up to another trapdoor in the ceiling. Suddenly Pax's mind is stabbed with pangs of sorrow and grief... Two voices in her mind... One of the mage from her old platoon: You'll have to do better, Paxsenarrion. Your efforts are just not good enough! Another of her own deceased mother: How could you let this happen, daughter? This is all your fault! And a wash of guilt and inadequacy washes over her...
The two rolls in the spoiler above are attack rolls. If they hit, then Pax takes 19 plus 17 psychic damage. Let me know how that works in with your wards. If the attacks don't hit, then Pax doesn't take the damage but still experiences the emotional effects. Either way, it doesn't take long for Pax to realise that she is being attacked. Two shadowy presences are in the room on either side of her, feeding on her deepest fears and doubts. Roll for initiative! (just Pax for now)

Meanwhile, as Pax climbs the tower Rhayna approaches the base, reaches out and touches the cold metal, and casts her spell. Immediately she learns how the artifact works, and that there are two command words: "mimsy" to open the door at the base as well as the trapdoor on the roof, and "brillig" to transform the tower into a one-inch metal cube. Just as she concludes the spell, she hears a muffled gasp from the second floor...
Remembering her visions from Gravenhollow, she recognized the metal structure from one of them. After find the command words, she says out loud. “Mimsy.”

The mental assault comes swiftly and unexpectedly, surprising Pax with it force. She grunts as the black shadows around her buffer her from most of the damage. Still though, some of the damage seeps into her mind and she shakes her head, suddenly stepping into a battle pose, shield up, and she already begins pulling at the magical weave for the energy to fight.

The door opens and Rhayna, Sekkar and Kaylyn can see inside. The only thing visible in the lower level (which is empty of any kind of furnishings) is a rag-clothed skeleton laying on the floor in one corner. Pax's plight wasn't immediately obvious to Sekkar, as she is out of his sight on the higher level of the tower, however once Sekkar enters the door he soon hears the sound of a scuffle from upstairs, and makes his way quickly to the ladder. The skeleton doesn't move so Sekkar begins to climb, doing his best while juggling his sword and shield...

The two shadowy fiends slowly circle around Pax, and again assault her mind, feeding off her deepest fears...
Kaylyn moves up with Rhayan and Pax and watches as Pax climbs the walls and slips into an open window. Using her Detect Magic she stands by as Rhayna learns the magic of the tower and a moment later opens the front door.
"Very nice Rhayna." She looks within to see what can be seen, her ability to detect magic heightening her senses.

Pax weaves about, briefly considering flight. But hearing her allies moving below and with the creatures lashing out at her but unable to hit she decided to hang in there. Her arcane powered vision allows her to see the shadowy things moving about despite the darkness. “Two dark shadowy things up here trying to kill me!” she says loudly.
She holds out her hand and holy light briefly lights up the room as she casts Sacred Flame at one.
