I am sure they would like to go home." Rhayna says to no one in particular. She turns to Vizeran, slightly embarrassed by her previous reaction. "Viseran, is Kleve able to teleport the Modrons to Mechanus? I do not want to make empty promises, even if it is to a machine. If not Mechanus, would Kleve be able to teleport all of us, including them, out of the Labyrinth once our mission here is completed?" She waits for a reply and tries to determine how truthfully the Drow mage is. (Rhayna Insight: 15)

Pax's glance isn't lost on Vizeran, but the drow is too proud to respond (or perhaps he is simply keeping his promise to not say anything condescending). With the tridrone leading the way and the two silent, compliant monodrones right behind it, the group move off through the tunnels. The Labyrinth is well-named, with the tunnels twisting tortuously and branching indiscriminately, opening into cavern after identical-looking cavern with multiple exits, each of which appears much like the other. And yet the tridrone walks on and on, seemingly confident in which tunnel to take to progress forward, despite the counter-intuitive nature of some of the decisions. The apparently arbitrary choices even tax Kaylyn and Sekkar's navigation senses, but gradually they sense that the group is making steady progress toward the south.
In response to Rhayna's query, Vizeran is clearly unwilling to waste Kleve's plane shifting ability on the modrons, and is also reluctant to send his bodyguard to Mechanus for an extended period, or to go there himself. It simply isn't a priority, he claims. He begrudgingly agrees that they can accommodate them when they leave the Labyrinth, but says that Kleve can only transport eight others in additional to himself, and that one of the monodrones would have to be left behind. With this disappointing response, Rhayna talks some more with the tridrone while the language spell lasts, and learns a few more interesting facts about the monodrones and their time in the Labyrinth. The name of Cosine-5978-Beta-12 refers to the three modrons as a sigle unit, and not to the tridrone alone, who has no individual designation. In fact the tridrone doesn't appear to have any concept of individuality at all, although with the monodrones reduced to little more than mindless followers, the tridrone is essentially functioning for all of them together. Rhayna spots several patches of fungus, but the few that are large enough to use her special ability on are too far apart to actually use it. She does however pass through several areas of faerzress, and every time she does she gets the impression of a familiar but faint voice in her head, just like outside Gravenhollow but perhaps a little more insistent.
Kaylyn spends the most effort on tracks and other signs of passage. The first few hours of travel yields little, but as they move further south, more and more telltale signs appear: the occasional patches of demon ichor splattered on the floor, walls and sometimes even the ceiling; deep claw marks scratched on the walls; and the periodic whiff of a foul stench of putrid flesh or sulphur; all hinting at the passing of demons, probably only hours old. Among all these are signs of mortal creatures: smears of blood and patches of shed fur, the smell and stain of urine, and the occasional patches of droppings, all suggesting the presence of packs of roving gnolls.
Sekkar moves like a ghost through the tunnels, giving even the native drow mage the occasional start as he appears out of nowhere to whisper a report. The fast-moving ranger is the first to spot one of the components of which they seek: in the dust near the edge of a side tunnel, in a large indentation in the soft ground below a trickle of water, a small toadstool with orange and red stripes on its beige cap. A quick investigation of the fungus and its location confirms that it is indeed a timmask, and it sprouts from what appears to be the footprint of a large cloven-hoofed demon. With this perfect example now fresh in mind, the others are more alert for other examples, and Rhayna spots one more while Kirin proudly finds the next three!
(Five out of thirteen timmask mushrooms found!)
Pax spends the entire journey keenly alert for danger. The first segment of travel is okay, but after a few hours, she can't shake the growing feeling that the group are being followed. Despite Kaylyn's assurances of the age of the tracks, and Sekkar's trustworthy attunement to the terrain, Pax continues to hear things that the others simply do not: the faint screech of a far-off demon or cackle of a gnoll echoing down the tunnels, the shuffle of feet or the snort of exhaled breath further back behind the group, and just the general sense that danger is looming. It feels as though unseen enemies are circling, trying to outflank the group. A few more hours of this uncertainty is almost more than Pax can take, and as the group enter yet another cavern she is just about to call for a stop when she senses unmistakable noise from multiple directions, and even light from a tunnel exit ahead.
From the tunnel behind Pax, a tall bull-headed creature emerges from the darkness, wielding a large axe and with a heavy collar around its neck. Attached to the collar are two heavy metal chains, the other end of which is each gripped by a lithe goat-headed demon. As if these demons weren't vile enough in appearance, their pustule-filled faces are surrounded by buzzing flies, and the stench that wafts along the tunnel is like the smell of a week-old rotting corpse.
Another minotaur appears from one of the tunnels opening into the cavern opposite, flanked by three more of the goat-headed bulezau demons. Six smaller but equally disgusting demons lumber out from behind these and into the cavern. But this time just one thick chain is attached to the minotaur's collar, which is so long that it disappears around the bend in the tunnel, from where the flicker of flame can be seen reflecting on the tunnel walls...
It's an ambush! But luckily no-one is surprised. Roll for Initiative!

Bounding and leaping off walls and over rocks they draw closer to the group, and yet they seem to hold back and pull up short before getting within attacking range. And then the smell hits! Clearly these putrid demons know the power of their sphacelous stench, and expect that it will be sufficiently repulsive to affect the defense of their prey. Just out of reach they swish their spiny tails and gnash their maggot-infested jaws...
