"It'll take me a while to get this chain mail off, and it's heavy enough that I might not be able to swim through with it on. Maybe we should lure them out here."
@DM: Does swimming in heavy armor have any penalties?
I'd say that if you tried swimming on your own, yes. Pulled by rope, no.
Unless anyone attempts to persuade him otherwise, Sihnion will wrap the rope around a claw, then set off purposefully into the dark water. His intention is to surface the other side and roar in a wounded animal kind of way before retreating through the tunnel, assuming the creatures seem hostile. He’s also assuming that three tugs will have the same effect as before.
Can lizard Sihnion communicate with, or at least understand, the Apex and her brood?

Not unless you have an active spell or language that allows communication. (Druids get a bunch, but they aren't usable while wildshaped.)
As for luring, give me an Intimidation check, DC 15
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(sorry, things have been crazy the past few days, so I'll get a map up as soon as I can)
Sihnion's roar reverberates around the cave, to which the lizards guarding the Apex ready themselves, and they rush after the intruder with a ferocity of an animal backed to a wall.

You can dash, but swimming without a swimming speed doubles movement cost. You'll make it halfway down the tunnel + 5 feet for every 5 points on the total strength checks of everyone pulling the rope.
Ahkota feels the rope go slack, and meaning you are trying to return, and begins to pull STR: 6
The Lizards run towards the pool, with Lizard 1 descending into the water.
The Apex trudges towards the pool, keeping an eye on it.
Xandar following Ahkota's lead, also pulls on the rope. STR: 17
This pulls Sihnion an additional 20ft down the tunnel.
You've got to be kidding me, these are far from good. as for how...
I use Paint 3D to make the layout, then use the image as an excel background for the gridwork and numbers. Then I screenshot that in sections and overlay them, since the full maps aren't covered by the screen in excel format. This tends to cause some degredation in the backgrounds, which scales inversely to the number of parts I take the screenshots in.
I use the spraypaint feature to create a blush effect for backgrounds, then use the fill-in tool to give walls and such a more uneven surface, cutting off any huge pathing growths that may occur. Then I add more layers of blush using the same color I'm working on plus or minus degrees of brightness.
For buildings and building interiors I use the highlighted gridsection feature of excel to create neat solid lines to emphasize walls, cover, and doors.
As you saw during the early testing phase, I use images of thinks like wagons, horses, and other things, so long as I can find an good image to use, and I can't I alter others.
When creating maps, i find it easiest to save an image of the map without the grid, and one with the grid. if something occurs that would change the topography in a major way, I have the base map to modify, as opposed to drawing a new one up. The grid base map is used as the base for each new map I post, so I have a collection of every encounter, turn by turn. (useful for remembering how things played out).
The excel sheet is a custom layout I have saved that I can throw any image i want under, with tiles having a height of 40 and width of 8 (ratios are dumb in excel).
Sihnion raises a claw, as if signalling he could be the lure.

You mean beat the water with your tail?

While your down there see if you can talk to them, maybe find out why they're mad at us.

Sihnion the intimidating lizard: 3
Exploring his lizard form's abilities, Sihnion issues forth an almighty roar of such ferocity that he feels somewhat intimidated himself.
Tamoda gets ready with his hand axe and light hammer
Thasla raises her sword, anticipating a non-Sinhion lizard to pop up that she will attack.
Any sign of them Thasla?

Perhaps if we put a little blood in the water? Tamoda gets ready to cut his own forearm just enough to start it bleeding...
