On second thought, Zubin uses the ring of animal influence to cast speak with animals before waking the sleeping ape. He speaks softly to her as he wakes her. "Hey, girl...hey, girl...how're you feeling? Any better?"
"You took some nasty wounds in that fight. I want to make sure you'll be okay," Zubin explains in a tone of concern. He holds out the apple. "Hungry?" He pauses for a moment to let the beast respond. "And I want to know why you attacked us. We really didn't want a fight."
Zubin shrugs and puts the apple back in his satchel. Looking at the half-eaten ape carcasses he notes, "It looks like the snakes killed quite a lot of your friends. I hope you all will be safer with the snakes dead." He uses that as a segue. "There are more apes up there, right?"
(Assuming an affirmative)
"We're going back inside for a little while. Do you think you can tell your friends not to attack us when we come back out? We don't want to hurt anyone else."
The giant ape shrugs and lumbers to its feet. It seems much better than when you bandaged it up, having had a long rest like the rest of you. "Me go." the beast says, glancing to the roof. He does not answer your question as he moves to the side of the chamber. As he tries to climb out the walls shift and shake, ready to fall down at any moment. Most of the stones bounce off of the giant ape's broad back, and he manages to jump up and grip the edge of the hole in the ceiling at last. More rocks tumble down, but the ape is able to force his way up and out, leaving a cloud of dust that makes you all cough down in the chamber.
(Now I think we are ready to go into the dungeon again...)
Here is the information from the large field-like chamber again. Remember you are coming into it from the North now...
As you approach a bend in the passage, you see a series of faint line drawings on the walls depicting people playing a game that uses a ball and has goals on either end of the playing field.
At the place where the corridor bends is a capstone that seemingly covers a hole in the floor. Etched into the top of the slab are several glyphs obscured by a layer of dust. This writing, in Olman, reads, “Dare not open this pit unless you be willing to meet the challenge of pelota.”
Five feet above the capstone in the southern wall is a hemispherical depression 1 foot in diameter.
A matching depression is in the Northern wall of the field-like area.
"Anyone up for a challenge? Looks like some sort of game, should be a wonderful start to our day." Sinsil says this with mock sincerity, but she knows she was a grump yesterday and that isn't good for party morale.
Zubin sighs as he watches the great ape depart. "Well, I guess that was a colossal waste of time. No pun intended," he adds. Turning back to the group, he asks, "Are we ready to go?"
“Remember guys that the poison haze seems to have left places that we have already opened. If we venture into this capstone area who knows what we will have to deal with again.”
"If this place is well built at all, there will be openings across the lower chambers to allow airflow. Less poison in the upper should allow some of it in the lower to escape. Hopefully."

"The winner of a challenge often receives a prize," Zubin notes. "If we wish to be thorough, we should attempt to attain the possible prize." He pauses. "In other words, I'm in."
You gather around the capstone. Shieldbiter and the new guy both start working to lift it...
Lifting the capstone requires the application of leverage and the combined effort of up to two characters with a total Strength of 25 or higher. Beneath the stone lid is a pit filled with the skeletal remains of the losers of a previous game of pelota in this area. Atop the bones rest several figurines and a plaque, all made of jade, and a glistening black ball 1 foot in diameter.
The jade plaque depicts two men, wearing padding on their arms and hips, with a large ball traveling between them. The figurines are carved in the image of a sun-god in a feathered robe. There are seven jade items in all, weighing 1 pound and worth 30 gp each.
Pelota Ball. The ball, made of rubber wound around a balsa core, is used in the game of pelota. It is the same size as the depression in the wall, which is one of the goals on this playing field.
Give me a handle animal check? Who has the ring of animal influeance?
I am ok with him having the ring, it does not require attunement. Go ahead and add it to your inventory and let's see what happens...

"Puny one speaks me?" The giant ape says in a deep tone. "What want?"

The giant ape looks at the tiny apple that would be the size of a marble to him and frowns. "No snakes." He says in answer.

Shieldbiter places the ball into the depression if no one objects.
When Shieldbiter picks up the ball, it suddenly jerks free of his grasp and rebounds off the south wall, then speeds 30 feet to the north and hovers.
