DMs note: Would have hit either way, so I'll allow the 2nd roll.
(Fredrick steps back and lets an arrow fly right into the Boar's face! It's devastating and kills the Boar instantly. Only the Giant Boar is left and is badly hurt.)
Deciding that since it's far more interested in someone else, Erhorn backs up from the regular boar until he's clear of obstructions between himself and the Giant Boar. With a flick of his wrist and a murmured word he points at the Giant Boar and a bolt of sickly green light lances from the tip of his finger towards the Giant Boar. Anyone familiar with Warlocks would immediately recognise their go-to cantrip Eldritch Blast.
He doesn't immediately notice that the regular-sized boar is bacon-to-be, and has an arrow stuck in its face.
(to-hit is a D20, isn't it? Erhorn's character sheet says +4 to hit: 17. Damage: 10 Range: 120 feet)
DMs note: Hopefully Xan is only MIA because of the holiday weekend, so I'll roll for him.
(Xanlanann readies his daggers and tries to get out of the Giant Boar's line of sight long enough to catch it by surprise. He jumps and stabs at the beast with both blades!)
Attack: 18 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
Off-hand Attack: Attack: 21 Damage: 2
Sneak Attack Damage: 1
(Xan's attacks manage to finally take down the Giant Boar, who fights for his last breath, but ultimately succumbs to his numerous wounds. The party breathes a sigh of relief as they realize the battle is finally over.)
Erhorn looks at the boars, the bloodied ground, the sky, the treeline, and then back at the boars.
"Does bacon usually throw itself at people like this?" he asks, the white eyebrow on the unburned side of his face flexing upward. "The pigs back at the hermitage were pretty easygoing."
Frederick sighed, lowering his bow, the carnage at an end. "Maybe someone tried to eat this bacon before they killed it, angering it in the process." He mused, putting his bow away now, and walking towards the downed giant boar. Hunching down, he looked it over for a moment, before turning to his companions. "As much as I'd love to spend some time slicing up some boar meat for our travels, every second we spend not closing in on finding the girl could prove catastrophic." He considered what he had just said, some internal conflict setting in. Probably the ale, from earlier..."That said, does anyone need a rest, after this little encounter? We won't do any good by the girl if we walk into a trap already hurting."
"My miracles are spent, since the gods see it fit to limit them. However, if it necessary, I can go on without a rest for prayer." Walton said, placing his holy symbol back around his neck and placing his mace back at his side. It was a shame they couldn't have some boar, but this was no time to find; after all, a child had been kidnapped.
DMs note: I'm going to make a DM decision here and have you all rest for the night. It's just the most realistic option with it being dark and you having been traveling for hours.
(Though the mind is strong, the body is weak, and the party slowly comes to the realization that they best rest up for the trials ahead of them. Fredrick, having experience with such things, starts skinning the boars and carving out good cutlets. The party rests and enjoys their flame grilled meal of Boar meat. Taking turns on the watch and being generally helpful of one another, the night passes uneventfully.
In the morning, everyone awakens bright and early, refreshed and ready to continue their quest. They make their preparations for the day. You are all able to pick up the trail and continue following it without much trouble. The party keeps tracking the goblins for several hours, until they come very close to a clearing a little after noon. Fredrick once again shines, being a little more used to the terrain than the rest of you, scouts ahead a little and comes back to report what he sees.)
(You're all still far enough away from the Goblins where you don't really need to be too stealthy. From the edge of the forest to the Goblins is about 150 feet. From that upper forest to the Goblins it's about 70 feet. I'll say you can get to the edge of the forest unnoticed without having to roll stealth, but if you want to sneak past the edge you're going to have to roll for stealth. )
DMs note: Sorry for borrowing one of your characters, it's just the fastest way to get to the more interesting point of the story. You all are where the word "Party" is on the drawing.
Erhorn immediately peppers Frederick with questions as soon as he gets back from scouting. Not about the goblins, or the layout of the place where they're camped, but about the architecture. Whether it was wood or stone, the colour of the wood or stone, and whether it was built on any interesting ruins. He seems really, really invested in how the place looked, whether it was impressive or threatening, and how clean it was.
It's probably a foible of having a Great Old One as a patron, and nothing to worry about.
"Well, couldn't tell you much, Erhorn my man. Other than that I saw a tomb, made of carved white rock." Frederick said, coming back to the group. "Ornate doors, with a sort of carved square design. I couldn't discern much else from where I was standing."
Turning a tad more serious, Frederick addresses the whole party. "So then, how do you guys want to tackle this? I see only two, though who knows if there's more in hiding. I reckon we can handle it, all the same, unless any of you would rather not make a ruckus."
"Aye. My word is that we strike hard and fast, before those little vermin can even cry for help. If we can get over there..."
Walton suggests, pointing towards the upper forest, the area close to the lazy goblin.
"We can cut behind them and deny the goblins an escape route. I reckon that actually sneaking there will be the tough part; my armor's noisy as can be, so I may have to stay here."
(The party makes their way to the edge of the forest, still deciding what they want to do. About 100 feet ahead, you see 2 goblins guarding a stone entrance. The goblin on the right looks like a serious little fellow, an intense look on his face as his eyes periodically scan the perimeter on the south side.
The goblin on the left, however, does not seem to be taking his assignment too seriously. He seems to be amusing himself with a dirty goblin magazine, hooting and hollering as he unfolds the centerfold and tries to show it to his more serious compatriot, who is visibly annoyed at his antics.
The two guard goblins start having an animated discussion... in Goblin. )
Spoilers for Fredrick (the only one here who knows Goblin):
"Check out the *unclear* on her! Huh? Buddy?"
"Knock it off, Krang! We're supposed to be keeping watch while the boss does his ritual."
(Krang looks like he doesn't give a shit.)
"Dude, you're such a goody two shoes! We've been here for 3 days and haven't seen one single person! Nobody comes here!"
"It doesn't matter. Something happens and the boss will tear into both of us. So do your job."
(mimicking) "So do your job..."
(The rest of you all hear gibberish, but the serious one seems to be angry at the lazy one.)
"What the hell is taking so long, anyways?"
"It'll take as long as it takes. Boss said it might take as long as 24 hours, and they just got started last night."
"Then the kid gets it, right?"
"Yup. Needs to 'spill the blood of the innocent' to make the place all holy for the Goblin God."
"Well, that'll be fun, at least."
(The tension between the two goblins seems to be eased. The serious one almost cracks a smile. The lazy goblin goes back to his post, sits on a stump, gives a quick glance to the area he's supposed to be patrolling, then goes back to his magazine.)
DM's note: Ok, so, just so you're all aware of the situation, you're all about 100 feet away from the guard goblins. If you try to shoot them with arrows from where you are you would have disadvantage if you have a shortbow but if you have a longbow it's a normal roll. If you make it to the forest cover to the north you'd be about 60 feet away from the lazy one and about 80 ft away from the serious one. Also, if you want your damage to be non-lethal please let me know when you roll. Let me know if you have questions.
"Ooooh. Sounds perfect," mutters Erhorn in response to Frederick's description. He doesn't elaborate on what the tomb would be perfect for.
Instead he follows the group and pauses at the edge of the clearing with the rest of the party. He watches the goblins in silence for a while, and then:
"So. I can give someone a fit of the giggles, but not from here." he says, in a hushed tone. "On the other hand I can try to hit someone with Eldritch Blast, but they'll know exactly where it came from. It's not a subtle spell. Same with Fire Bolt." He smirks. "You lot can always rush in, bash everything in sight and get the girl's throat cut as soon as they get the alarm though. That'll impress everyone, I'm sure." He hesitates, clearly having put some ranks into Sarcasm with Tact as his dump stat. "We're sure they have the girl, right?"
"Yeah...Yeah, we're sure they have her." Frederick confirms, having heard what the two goblins had said, a worried expression on his face. "And I get the feeling we're going to have to work quickly." Frederick takes a moment to consider the best plan of action.
"I want the three of you to get closer to the enemy. To that forest cover over there, perhaps?" Frederick points it out. "I reckon I can hit them with my longbow from here. The firing of my first arrow will be my indication to you all initiate attack." He explains. "Also...If we can keep the one on the left alive, it would prove useful to extract information about what lies ahead. Only if it's feasible to keep him alive, though."
Frederick looks to each of his companions, as he pulls out his bow. "Does that sound agreeable to everyone?"
