Peri guffaws loudly. "You want us to go sneak past an ancient dragon to face a wizard, and want one of us to wait here and hold your hand? Ha! You're beautiful, true enough, but no one is that pretty! Tell you what: how's about we escort you out of this pit and back to town, and I'll buy you a drink. We've got business back there anyway, and hearin' of an ancient dragon and a teleporting wizard's givin' me the heebie-jeebies!"
Halting at Kei’s words, Gerrard becomes suspicious at the stranger’s actions, saying, “We can escort you up and out of this place right now. Why would you want us to abandon you here and face uncertain dangers below?”
Dwal examines the room carefully, but sees little that's not already obvious. The books are in poor shape, but it's clear that someone has been extensively reading the moldy, worm-eaten pages recently. The texts are in Dwarvish - a lot of ancient history and magical arcana, by the looks of it.
She responds, through her tears, "This foul man is a menace to all. He must be stopped. We can't just leave. He'll find us!" She is upset and flustered and appears on the verge of panic.
"All right, calm down lass! We've already told you we'd get you..." Mid-sentence Peri's face goes blank for just a second, then he snaps back to himself. He glances around the room in confusion, and when his eyes again find the woman his face flushes a dark, angry purple. He leaps across the room, shoving his spear up under her throat. "Did you just try meddlin' with my mind?!?" he demands, furious. "Somethin' just tickled my brain, and if it wasn't you you'd better point 'em out real quick before I nail your pretty hide to the wall!"
The woman emits a small shriek, briefly terrified by Peri's hostile advance. She glances around wildly. "It's him! He's coming! We have to go!" She points at the door to the north where you entered. "Now!"
There are the remains of dozens of books here, but Dwal reaches for the one on the table from which the woman was reading. It's a pile of loose, moldy, crumbling pages. He sweeps them up, and upon examination they seem to be an old history of Khundrukar, a Dwarven outpost.
Dwal will make a mental note of that for later. He will listen for any footfalls coming in their direction.
Perception: 7
Dwal also makes a face, casting some doubt on this beautiful female's words. "If'n yer here as his prisoner, then how does he keep ye from running away?" he asks.
"The ghost – Arundil – he lets nothing in or out," she responds to Dwal. "How did you get past him?" She looks Dwal in the eye with a hint of suspicion.
"Do not fear, fair maiden. We will protect you! Let us retreat to the north as you suggest. I will protect you as my intrepid allies destroy the mage when he appears in this room to accost you!" calls out the noble, concerned about the lady's safety in this dangerous place. Gerrard holds out his hand to her, inviting her to join him in escaping to the north as she suggested. Assuming she comes with him, he will escort her out the room to the north and away from the imminent arrival of the hostile mage.

He is infuriated that someone has attempted to cloud his mind, but he can't tell whether it was this woman or the mage she claims is keeping her captive. The confusion is not making him less angry and when Gerrard offers to escort her from the room - leaving Peri and the others to battle this mage without him - he narrows his eyes in suspicion. "Aye, we can go. But we'll go as a group, all together, or we'll none of us go. No one is going off alone with this 'lady' until I know just who tampered with my head. Frankly," he says, momentarily taking his eyes off the woman to make eye contact with Gerrard, "I'm surprised a nobleman like yourself would suggest his companions stay and face danger while you abscond with the fair maiden. I wonder how such a plan entered your thoughts. Doesn't seem to fit with the man who stormed a pirate ship alongside folks he'd just met." He turns his focus back to the woman, lowering the spear from her throat a bare few inches. "We'll all go now; your mage can rot here in this forgotten hall for all I care. Go ahead and take Lord Feldren's arm; I'll be right here behind you." As Gerrard escorts her out Peri will keep his spear aimed at her back, watching her like a hawk.
The bard can't but smile at the unfolding scene. You couldn't script this type of drama. His brain trying to capture every moment to perhaps spin a tale of their adventure to some future crowd. It certainly had all the hallmarks of a grand story - it had drama and intrigue and a beautiful maiden. Maybe not treasure in a physical sense, but gold all the same.
He chuckles at Peri's paranoia, but the halflings feeling that something or someone had attempted to enter his mind was a cause for concern though. The deep held quite a few monstrosities that could affect your mental state. The thought of any one of those sent chills down his back. He follows close behind the spear wielder. Before leaving the room he casts an illusion. A lady sitting at the chair. It wouldn't fool anyone for long, but maybe they only needed that one extra moment.
The woman gives a frightened glance at Peri and his spear before averting her gaze. She slowly hobbles toward the door – there's something wrong with her foot – pausing to glance nervously around the room. She slowly makes her way through the door to the north, limping heavily, into the large chamber full of bodies.

Kei
With a quick wave of his hand and a soft murmur Kei sends a Message to Peri.
I do not trust this lady. She seems very interested in the ghost and in leaving. I think there is more afoot here. Let's see if I can't spring her trap.
Before anyone can answer Kei blurts out "We have trapped the ghost in the barracks. Never fear m'lady, the way is clear out of here"
”Come now, Master Fenwader, can you not see the lady is injured?” Says Gerrard as he gallantly ushers her out of the room and stands in front of her protectively. “I will protect her when the mage arrives, but we must strike quickly and decisively to the south after him immediately.”
Seeing Kei’s illusion, Gerrard smiles at him and says, “Excellent thinking, Master Kei. We can strike while the mage is distracted by the image.”
Peri backs off a bit, but is careful to position himself so that Gerrard is not blocking his line of attack toward the woman, should it be necessary. Leaving potential foes astride their escape, finding a woman where she had no reason to be, and that strange probe of his mind have got him jumpy as a cat in a kennel. Gerrard's words do nothing to placate him, but they do draw his attention to the woman's limp. He fixes his Eldritch Sight on her feet to see if there's an arcane cause of her affliction.
The woman pauses. "Trapped? How do you trap a ghost? They can travel through the ethereal!" She gasps, her eyes darting around nervously.
Peri cannot see anything arcane about her feet. She is wearing baggy, worn trousers and well-used ordinary leather slippers.
"There's another way." She pauses a moment. "A secret door. It leads to the pit. I saw the wizard enter bodily through it once. There." She points to a panel on the south wall, just west of the Library door. "There's not much time, though. If this one felt his presence," - she glances at Peri , her voice trembling - "he will probably be coming soon..."
"You surprise me, Master Kei, that you would try to deceive this beautiful maiden. Indeed, the ghost is destroyed, and the way out is clear, if you discount any wandering dark dwarves," remarks Gerrard, still hovering protectively near the lady. "But first we must deal with this mage--he must have been warned somehow of our trap for him, so the only path forward is to corner him in his lair," he reasons. Turning to the lady, he smiles and says, "Thank you for your information on the hidden path, we must strike without delay!" Gerrard goes over to the indicated secret door and opens it, inviting his allies to go through as he holds it open.
If Peri walks by on the way through the secret door...
For a fleeting moment, Gerrard looks intently at your forehead for some reason...Weird.

There is indeed a secret, sliding panel. Gerrard opens it.
Behind it is a long, dark, narrow corridor, which dead-ends some sixty feet to the south. A passage turns west about halfway down. It is empty, and musty.
"She's a beautiful female, surrounded by rooms and rooms of corpses." Dwal states. "There's no sign she has been eatin' anything and the only food around is corpses, an' ye wanna follow 'er about like a stray pup hungry fer a meal?" Dwal pauses for a moment and steps back a couple paces far from the woman.
