(JT thinks the safest plan is to clear the rest of the house first to be sure we have a clear line of retreat in case we have to bail. Peri, however, is itching to see what's behind "The Forbidden Door". Just let him know before you do it so he's not rooting through someone's mattress when the zombie horde attacks! ;) )
The door appears normal. The word “DANGER” is scrawled on that door in the Common tongue using chalk. It has a wooden bar across it, held in brackets on the frame and the door itself. You can see that it is damaged and bent, as if something has tried to push the door open from the other side.
Dwal squints at Sanbalet's notes, but he can't quite work it out. It seems to be some sort of signaling code, but he's having trouble deciphering the handwriting. Others may try.
You may all certainly take a short rest if you like. However, Seth and Farley may depart in the meantime. But Butter's going nowhere without your help (besides, he looks like he really needs that nap.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Dwal puts on the glasses, which have a subtle fish-scale pattern on the frames and are made of an unfamiliar material.
They work marvelously well for the job. (Rolling again for Investigation, this time with advantage:20 )
Known as "Eyes of Minute Seeing", while wearing these spectacles you can see much better than normal out to a range of one foot. You have advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) checks that rely on sight while searching an area or studying an object within that range.
(A note on identifying magic items in 5e: You can focus on one item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with it, to learn its properties and use. Alternately, you can sometimes experiment with it (like in this case), or there's always the Identify spell.)
Sanbalet's notes outline a signaling system. It utilizes the bullseye lantern (currently under the table) to communicate messages with an approaching ship by combining long and short flashes made with its shutter:
Long–short–short–short: “Is it safe?” (The ship initiates the exchange with this signal.)
Short–long–short–long: “Everything safe.” (The smugglers respond with this signal.)
Long–long–long: “Ready to unload; come to the ship.” (The ship confirms a reply with this signal.)
The arrangement calls for someone aboard the ship to flash the first signal. The shore party replies by flashing the second signal, after which the third signal flashes from the ship.

(Are these house rules or actual content from 5e? I had never heard of the focusing during short rest. I like it either way)
Qivys
"Well I'll be a halflings uncle - sorry Peri - I had forgotten about those peculiar glasses. Well done lads" he congratulates Dwal on reading the text, and Peri for recalling that the glasses were in the pack.
"Let's see about this fish scale armour then"he finds a stool that Peri hasn't destroyed with his violent searching of the room, and sits with the magical scale mail across his lap. "Let's take that rest while Butter sleeps off a little of that brandy. Then we can open that door"indicating towards the Danger door.
(He will "focus on one item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with it, to learn its properties and use." ;) )
"Aye, no one ever needs spectacles until they try them. Nothing to be ashamed of. Besides, they make you look dignified. Erudite even. You just go ahead and keep them; my eyes are still young and keen so they're of no use to me. If you're not usin' that pipe, though, I wouldn't mind tryin' it."
Seeing his kin and Peri bickering makes him laugh. "How long did you say you'd known each other?"He says with tongue in cheek. His mood certainly lightening in the company of these two.
Peri will take cover behind the east bed. "Go on and open it then. I'll be back here polishin' me buttons. Care to join me Miss?" he asks Missy. We'll let the dwarves have the honor of being out front."
(I don't think there's a time crunch in the game. If you asked us to hold on for a minute before opening the door I think the dwarves would be willing to wait.)
(I was kind of hoping we'd have a Short Rest. That way I get Guiding Bolt to recharge AND I might find out if this armour is swanky fish emblazoned perfection or just fish guts stuck on normal scale mail)
(Anyone else really want to open the Danger door? I'm itching to get Qiv to just bust it open and see what cometh)
Dwal
Investigation: 11
(I'll poke that Bear with ya Qiv...lets open that door!!! :P)
but we need to take a rest to regain spell slots and the like...

Peri:
Peri sees Dwal squinting at the notes and offers him the glasses that were in the pack Qivys had given him. "D'you think these might help?"
Dwal
Dwal looks at Peri "You Rascal Halfling" he raises his voice 'my vision is just fine."
Dwal takes the glasses and puts them on then looks at the note again.

Dwal
Dwal's eyes widen with amazement. 'These DO help." he exclaims and relays what he has found.

Dwal
Dwal grimaces at Peri's words, taking a swipe at Peri with no real intent to hit him.
"Damned fur foot...Respect your elders." he exclaims.
Dwal puts the glasses in a pocket none the less.
(OCC: great RP moment)
Qivys
Seeing his kin and Peri bickering makes him laugh. "How long did you say you'd known each other?" He says with tongue in cheek. His mood certainly lightening in the company of these two.
Dwal
"Me, know a Halfling?" Dwal exclaims. "I never sent me eyes on him till yesterday." he states.
"You know halflings." he continues. "all buttons and bother." Dwal says with a faint crooked smile.
"Since I can't regain spells till after a good nights rest, let's be about this locked door." Dwal says with a smile.
Peri:
Peri will take cover behind the east bed. "Go on and open it then. I'll be back here polishin' me buttons. Care to join me Miss?" he asks Missy. We'll let the dwarves have the honor of being out front."
(would it be possible for Missy to have tried to grab whatever the magic source is before coming back in time for this?)

OCC: Not opposed to a short rest either.
(Yep - DMG, p. 136 - "Identifying a Magic Item." I try to stick to RAW whenever possible, so do challenge me if you think I'm not.)
