It's the wee hours of the morning when all hell breaks loose.
Peri and Kei wake to noise - their cabin door opening. In the doorway stand hideous fish-faced humanoids. Peri recognizes them immediately: Sea Devils, Sahuagin. Dwarven shouts and cries can now be heard in the hold. The sahuagin hold spears. One lunges at Peri.
Dwal, Gerrard, and Oceanus are less lucky. It isn't until a volley of spears plunge into your sleeping sea elf companion that you awaken.
There's a bloodbath going on nearby in the main hold: Sahuagin #6 spear attack vs sailor: 20 Piercing damage: 6 Sahuagin #6 bite attack vs sailor: 13 Piercing damage: 6
Sahuagin #7 spear attack vs sailor: 12 Piercing damage: 7 Sahuagin #7 bite attack vs sailor: 12 Piercing damage: 5
Sahuagin #8 spear attack vs sailor: 23 Piercing damage: 17 Sahuagin #8 bite attack vs sailor: 22 Piercing damage: 7
Sahuagin #9 spear attack vs sailor: 15 Piercing damage: 12 Sahuagin #9 bite attack vs sailor: 20 Piercing damage: 5
Sahuagin Baron trident attack vs sailor: 19 Piercing damage: 24 Sahuagin Baron bite attack vs sailor: 22 Piercing damage: 14
Roll initiative, everyone! (Usually I do, but let's try how it goes if you do...) Kei at -2 penalty for seasickness.
(Also: unless you can convince me you sleep in your light armor, you are armorless. Adjust your AC accordingly! Shield okay.)
(Huh - that's weird - I got a manipulated dice banner, and I didn't even edit the post! That was my first posting. How could I manipulate it if I didn't even edit it?)
Mayhem ensues. Everyone is waking and scrambling for weapons and shields. Oceanus is seriously injured but not down.
There are many dead dwarves, killed in their sleep in the hold, which is filled with rampaging sahuagin.
(OCC: went to equipment and turned off armor & shield Dwal's AC is 14) Initiative: 22
Dwal hears the screams and for a moment he is back in the Longhouse the night the Orcs came raiding. Dwal snaps out of it and grabs his staff and battle-axe. As he goes out to battle his deep baritone voice echoes through the ship as he sings a Fiercehammer Battle song.
Come now Moradin Strike the hammer blows Rage of the fire To battle, our clan goes Let the foes tremble in fear As our Rage resounds Moradins Hammer guide our fate To war, Fiercehammer is bound!
(OCC not much. took a couple of minutes to figure out :P)
Sleeping in armor is for commoners. Gerrard is sleeping in his frilly silk pajamas after a long day of tedium, learning nautical terms and processes, and fruitlessly trying to pen a love letter.
Shocked awake by the screams, Gerrard is horrified as the sweet greeting from his beloved redhead is replaced by death and screaming, and her beautiful face is replaced by shadowy fish-type attackers!
Peri is sound asleep, easily able to ignore the intermittent retching noises coming from Kei; he's not the first aspiring sailor to learn the rolling of the open sea doesn't agree with him. But when the fish-faced assassins burst through the door he pops to fully awake, his first thought being the need to man his battle station, then realizing as a passenger he has no battle station. He hops up on his bunk, clad only in his skivvies, and grabs the spear beside his bunk. (Initiative: 22)
(Let's wait until Kei weighs in, but you're all facing a real bottleneck. Gerrard and Kei are blocked in, but can fight with ranged weapons. Dwal can't even see his opponents right now, let alone fight them, unless he and Gerrard agree to change places mid-round - I think that's allowable RAW without penalty? Let me know if any other RAW rules apply here.)
He wasn't exactly asleep when the battle broke out. More in a daze, similar to a hangover, slipping in and out of a state of awareness. The sound of screaming dwarves and walking fish people soon break his stupor.
Standing in just his pantaloons and a shirt covered in bodily fluid he reaches for his pouch of magic ingredients and grabs the first thing that comes to hand. A small iron nail. He looks the Sahuagin standing in their door square in its ugly eyes and cast Hold Person (Wis Save 15).
(If it fails it's save, he shouts to Peri) "Get out that door and see what's going on!"
Dwal manages to peek around the corner far enough to launch a mote of mystic fire at one of the sea devils, but he has a lousy vantage point, and it misses. He does, however, provide Oceanus a bit of relief from his deep spear wounds.
Peri may act next.
(Gerrard acts before Oceanus; you can ready an attack action contingent upon Oceanus disengaging and swapping places with you, but you can't ready both a move-and-attack, correct?)
OOC: Gerrard can just delay his turn until Oceanus acts, which he may do...Metagaming, we know Oceanus goes before the bad guys—Gerrard doesn’t know that, though...
Never mind, I just looked it up—“Delay” is gone in 5th edition, so it looks like Gerrard will have a decision to make.

Peri:
From his perch atop his bunk Peri thrusts his spear at the intruder in the doorway: 25 for 7 damage.
He follows this with a flying knee to its face 20 for 4 damage. If the creature goes down he will move out of the cabin and aft, toward the pair attacking the other cabin. If it's still up he will burn a Ki point to do Flurry of Blows (21 for 6 damage). If that kills it he will move to the aforementioned space; otherwise he will stand to the side of the door to give Kei a clear line of sight to the creature.
All three blows hit: the spear across its scaled chest, a flying knee, and an intense pummeling to the head. It is staggering - nearly out - but somehow still standing. Another looms closely over its shoulder.
Rolling out of bed and heading towards the door in the dimness, Gerrard tries to take advantage of the enemy's focus on Oceanus and slip by him into the main hold.
Bonus action tumble through enemy square: Opposed acrobatics roll: 9
If he is unsuccessful:
The sahuagin warrior blocks his path, and Gerrard is forced to retreat back to his original spot. Cursing, the young noble quickly flings two throwing knives from his kit at the interloper.
Action:
Knife 1: Attack: 17 Damage: 6
Knife 2: Attack: 24 Damage: 7
If he is successful:
Slipping past the distracted warrior, Gerrard draws his blades, bathing the hold with soft moonlight. Striking first at the wounded foe, he follows up with the one blocking his door if the first one goes down. Settling back into a defensive stance, he prepares to defend himself with his blades.
Elegant Rapier Attack 1: Attack: 20 Damage: 6
Elegant Rapier Attack 2: Attack: 16 Damage: 7
Reaction planned to parry the first attack that hits him, unless the big dude engages--then prioritize the baron's attacks to parry.

The Sahuagin tries to block Gerrard's attempt to tumble past him: Dex: 1
Gerrard succeeds, but finds himself now engaged with three of the fish-faced monsters. He can also now see the scope of their battle. He catches the gaze of the big, pale one with the trident.
The first blade goes clear through the wounded sahuagin engaged with Peri - it collapses to the deck - the second blade wounds the one that had blocked Gerrard's doorway and is engaged with Oceanus.
Kei is up next; the looming fishman blocking his doorway now gone, he is now able to leave the room and engage with the others.
