That seems to be pretty normal around here! There's never a lack for players when a DM is kind enough to make an offer to the general public, particularly for RP-heavy threads, since those are the type that appear to lend themselves to pbp most comfortably. Those offers happen pretty regularly, though, so if you don't make it in one, just keep trying until you find a DM who likes your application enough to make it happen. :-)
Ander was the second son of the younger sister of a minor lord, with little hope of inheriting title or land. Still, he was able to train as a knight, serving his uncle with lance and sword. Ander resented his wealthier cousins at times, but shoved those feelings down, certain his loyalty and skill would win him respect. To an extent, he was right, as he took on more and more responsibility. He led the campaign to clear the local high road of bandits, and when his lord was called to war, it was Ander who led the local company. They never saw more than skirmishes, but they fought gallantly enough, they did their duty, and surely Ander would receive some recognition from his uncle, some respect, as his military stand in. When he returned, though, he got scarcely more than a nod, a few token words, before the lord and his sons went back to their usual habit, ignoring him as they spent their days hunting, drinking, and courting the approval (and daughters) of bigger fish in the area. Ander placed great stock in honor, and loyalty. Leaving his family had long seemed unthinkable, but now? He'd seen a good deal more of the world, and his uncle was barely a dot on the map, in terms of importance. He'd been snubbed for years by men who'd never seen battle outside of tournaments and drunken brawls at feasts. It was time for Ander to make his own way in the world, and the new continent seemed just the place to do it. So he strapped on his weapons, and simply rode away in the night, heading for the nearest port. Whatever danger and adventure may lie ahead in this new world, Ander stands ready to meet it, and carve out a name for himself in lands unsullied by the titles and politics of the old world.

Thank you, to all who submitted applications. Unfortunately, as it always is, it can't support the number that applied. A group pm will be going out to those who have been selected, later today.
For those of you who weren't selected, hopefully we'll find ourselves in another one together, sometime in the future.
Austin is a bounty hunter who has tracked her latest quarry to these lands.
She is a warrior who uses a quarterstaff and wields some small magic abilities.
Notes:
I'd want to work with you on the 2 levels of warlock and what that would mean for the character. What that bond with the patron would entail and that sort of thing. I am planning on taking fighter, then some levels of sorcerer (divine blood) down the road. This will be mostly a fighter build though. She is what I would consider a tank character.
Also, I would hope to use the quarterstaff as an arcane focus, as a 'staff' can be used as one and a quarterstaff is another type of 'staff'. Not a deal breaker by any means though, just would make things easier.
One final item is that I would be using the Polearm Master feat, gained right off as variant human, plus the Warcaster feat, not gotten until I reach level 6, to give her an opportunity attack, with a spell, when someone enters her reach. Rules As Written allows this, but I wanted to note it right off in my application, so that you could take it into account when deciding on if this character is a fit for your game.
Name: Brandon Gladwell Race | Class: Variant Human(Alert) Beast Master Ranger Background: City Watch/ Investigator Alignment: Chaotic Good Backstory:
Brandon is a man of the law, but he practices in an environment far different than his urban counterparts. Through thick forests and ruinous swamps, his tracks his quarries with the help of his trusty hound, Bertha. Highwaymen and criminals may seek shelter in the immense woodlands, but Brandon is responsible for finding them and bringing justice to those who flee from it. He relishes the hunt, sneaking through deep undergrowth or feeling the wind in his back as he runs to catch another lawbreaker.
But alas, those days have come to the end. The forests are being cut down, replaced by farms and settlements. Brandon found himself transferred to a position within the city watch. He hated it, the cramped buildings and foul alleys, the bustling crowds of people everywhere. Fed up with his job, he turned in his badge and sought solace in a new land, the lost continent of Theviranne. He heard of ruined civilizations in unexplored wilderness, places where people have not stepped foot in thousands of years. He and Bertha could make a new home in a place like that.

Kiera Marr is a young scion of one of the oldest noble houses, the House of Gyrleone, well known for its service to Silvercrest as griffon breeders, trainers, and riders. Many of the members of the House have served in the griffon cavalry that are a familiar sight in the skies over the city of Silvercrest. Kiera however, has spent much of her youth brawling in local taverns and festhalls, spending what pittance she gets as a stipend from the House as a descendant of her great-grandmother, Kerryn Marr, a black sheep who married out of the family name to a lesser house.
The rift that separated the House Marr from House Gyrleone was "healed" when it was revealed that Lord Huld Gyrleone had been slain and his brain consumed by a greater doppelganger. His place as patriarch was assumed by the shapeshifter and much of what he had done since that time was to the detriment of the House. The death of the doppelganger left House Gyrleone devoid of a line of succession since Lord Huld had sired no children before his death. Magistrates from Silvercrest were sent to Teskyr, where Kiera and her parents and siblings lived, after it was determined that the descendants of Kerryn were to be awarded ownership of the land and holdings left behind by Lord Huld.
Kiera's father, Viktor Marr, son of Alura Marr (grandmother) and Talos Ilmara (grandfather), has assumed leadership of the house and taken the Gyrleone name as his own. Kiera has remained defiant and favors the name of her grandmother, preferring to avoid recognition as a Gyrleone as she travels across the sea to the kingdom of Cathaan.

“I will take responsibility for what I have done. [...] If must fall, I will rise each time a better man.” ― Brandon Sanderson, Oathbringer.
Name: Vannilian Nightbow (Yes, he gave himself the last name)
Race, class: Half-elf, Rogue (Scout)
Background: Urchin
Alignment: Neutral (his character arc will be toward Lawful Neutral as he adopts more of the ranger code)
Grew up on the streets of Waterdeep. Every now and then I would be visited by an elf (father, this fact is unknown to me) who would bring me some food and teach me about nature and medicine. At first we would just go to the park and practice naming plants and small animals but over the years we would leave the city for extended periods. He taught me to survive in the wild as I had learned to survive the city streets. I recently have started to have aspirations of being a ranger some day. My elf mentor says I have skill with a bow and learn quickly when he instructs me in nature and survival. With conflict between myself and the guild getting worse I think it is time for me to leave this place and try to chase my dream of being a ranger. I have heard of a new land called Theviranne which might meet all my criteria for survival- far from the guild (check), err yeah, that's about finishes my list. I leave a note for Ms. Benni at the orphanage to let her know I'll send money when I can.
(I see this character as more of a ranger but who still slips into old habits of stealing and lying more than he should. He is hoping to find a ranger somewhere on his journey to learn more from (possibly he could find his father in Therivanne, maybe his father told him he was going and never made it back).
Name: Morgan Stoutbrew Race | Class: Dwarf Ranger (Fey Wanderer) Background: Outlander Alignment: Chaotic Good Backstory: Morgan Stoutbrew was an odd dwarf who preferred the open skies of the world above ground to the mountain kingdom he called home. Prone to bouts of wanderlust in his youth, he'd routinely venture forth on long treks into the wilderness alone - often for months at a time - before returning to his home and family. Returning from one of his trips, he accidentally stumbled across a weakened border between the Material Plane and the Feywilds; his curiosity peaked, he decided to extend his trip and explore all that the realm had to offer. During his journey, he came across a group of people who had become trapped there and helped safely guide them back to the Material Plane, deciding at the end to leave the Wilds with them and return to his people. When he arrived back though, he instantly felt out of place and knew that his calling - at least for the moment - lay at the border he had discovered; aiding lost souls find their way home, defending the Fey from any that would try to harm them or their realm and wait for the boundary between realms to heal and close. After a time under his watch, the boundary was safely shut and his wanderlust returned once more as he felt he had accomplished all that he was going to be able to in his homeland. Yearning for a new adventure and a new purpose, Morgan decides to head toward the reclaimed continent of Theviranne hoping to find his next calling in the unexplored lands.
Background: (Summary here. Can expand if there is opportunity for PC arch integration on a more granular scale)
Captured after his tribe ambushed, Storm was forced to be a workhorse for the military of the nearby city due to his size and brute strength. Slavery, in a manner of speaking, kept him angry and hungry; however, he did receive training with all manner of weaponry. Years and years of this lead to resentment. One day, while moving tons and tons of war materials, a band of officers came around the corner. "This dumb brute will work perfectly. Come Ooff. We have an assignment for you"
They allowed Storm to collect my gear and his weapons of choice and sent him to the nearby harbor for the journey to the lost continent of Theviranne. His mission was to explore and document my findings. "You are not to return until the entire continent mapped and annotation with cities, landscapes, political structures, and all other manner of information."
One night on the boat ride over, Storm received a dream. A massive thunderstorm approached from all sides around the boat. As he look around, Storm was the only being present. All he remembered from the dream is a single word: "BECOME!"
When he awoke, his vision was blinded by bright lights that (to him) were runes or glyphs he had never seen before. Confused and intrigued, he now has a second mission. Figure out these runes and what they mean to him.
However, with its borders now wide open and accepting (at least more accepting than its peoples), trade and tourism is now booming and becoming common place, with potential of spread to the rest of the continent. Siwa was by no means not interested in her family trade, fine fabrics and patterns was and would always be enticing, but there was something about magic that was "even cooler than moms broidery collection". Siwa worked in her parents store every day, but although they sometimes worked for people with deep pockets she would never earn enough to afford tutelage. Then she met Mortimer... Mortimer, a half-elf con man found the young girl wandering the streets with a delivery one day and offered to teach her his ways with the promise of piles of gold. Siwa, young and impressionable as she was, agreed to the deal. With days working for her parents and evenings and weekends helping Mortimer to swindle tourists on the streets of with both gambling schemes and selling "relics of the ruins on the lost continents".
Eventually she earned enough money and went to study wizardry. When she reached the second year of her tutelage she was to choose a school of magic. She was set, ready to pick something pretty, like illusion, or abjuration, protecting her family would be nice... but by some unknown mistake, perhaps destiny, perhaps her own confusion and excitement at the moment she ended up with.. necromancy. In a class full of more serious wizards the bubbly and sassy girl stuck out like a sore thumb. She eventually learned to love necromancy, for reasons she can't really explain herself and continued her studies for as long as the money held.
Now she is on the edge of being broke and had to drop out of school for a bit to earn some more money, but where? After making pocket change with her parents for a while, she remembered how much people paid for the fake relics back when she worked with Mortimer. Real ones had would fetch a bigger sum, right?
