Why do plagues always miss the wicked and the heartless? Anyone ever feel like a fire could make better choices than an illness? I'm sorry. I don't think I meant that.
Deet shakes his head. Fire doesn't make better choices. He watches the watchman sadly as he walks away. I reckon a fire in a place like this would be bad, real bad, worse than I can imagine. So many people in such a small area, it's still hard to get my head around it.
He resumes his task of keeping the path clear for Cragmyre as he carries the elf back to their lodgings.
You all arrive back at the Boarding House just four doors up from the pub. Mrs Fletcher has left a small oil lantern lit on a hook next to the door. You judge it to be about an hour till the midnight toll. Mrs Fletcher would be sound asleep at this time. What do you want to do with the unconscious elf?
The coal chute looks locked but is in actual fact, not. Mrs Fletcher has obviously tried to give the impression that the padlock was locked by turning it on an angle. Everyone can fit down the chute except for Cragmyre. Everyone has a key for the front door (plus one for your room door) except of course for Tahta.
I haven't been told I'm a full guest so I'll let whoever in through the coal chute in order to unlock the front door but stay in the basement for the night...unless folks are staying up to talk...
This all seems a bit complicated, says Deet. Why don't we just bring everyone in through the front door, and you can both sleep in our rooms - I think mine might be a bit small, but you're welcome to try if you fit We'll leave a note for Widow Fletcher about the unexpected guests, and then we can explain in the morning. It can't be the first time this has ever happened after all. Deet enters the house and, having no paper in his pack, looks around to try to find some.
There is a chalk board in the kitchen for just such an occasion.
After scratching a quick note for Mrs Fletcher, you all make your way to your rooms. There is spare corner of the attic room where the Elf can be comfortable enough on a pile of old furs. A descent step up from where she was going to sleep. After an eventful night of song and smoke you all find yourselves drifting off to sleep quickly.
Arden, you are woken by the sounds of Mrs Fletcher walking up the stairs. Judging from the light peaking through the curtains you think it a little after sunrise. You hear her continue to the attic. You think nothing of it until perhaps ten minutes later as you are about to drift back off again, when there is a muffled scream that is abruptly cut off.
You are all awoken by what you think was a scream.
Sihegiall leaps out of bed, looking for a chair to jam under the door handle and looks out the window to see what kind of trouble she's in and how high off the ground the window is, hands glowing white, preparing to cram her gear in her pack and bolt.

((does Arden know what bassy means in this context? is it something Mark is missing?))
Tahta would explain if anyone asks. Bassy is a racial slur for elves and their more unpredictable nature after their plight: BAS = Back Up Slowly

I...errr...I leave it up to you lot...
Tahta inspects the coal chute to see if it's unlocked.
Klee give a queasy smile

Klee tuts at the crude chalk board, a little offended that no one asked the professional scribe to scribe the note.

Arden curses under his breath and rushes towards the scream.
