Toc begins his performance, as he advances towards the apprentice, moving in a direct line, but leaping and spinning in between the two of them as he approaches like a dancer putting on a show. Then, as he nears the other wizard a shadowy blade appears in his hand as he casts shadow blade and lashes out with the ghosty short sword.
"Show some loyalty!" Taviel was watching the duel as well and heard Germain's words. "That elf is with us since Baldur's Gates and the wizard just joined. The stranger did not own his place yet." She frowned (if not seriously) at the "fellow guard" and added "Ten golds on the elf."
Naroth is standing behind his employer looking about the area seeming to have little interest in the wizard duel.
What am I going to do, how am I going to find that totem once more. Then Naroth moves his eyes ever so slightly to the side staring at one of the cultists, I am going to have to find one of them alone and do some investigating on my own to find out just how much they know of my village. I will get to the bottom of this and I will get my revenge.
Germain Your employer grunts and nods to Toc. "He's going to kick the apprentice's butt, but when the master is involved, then I'd say differently."
Toc Moves with expert grace and practice, the shadowy blade forming in his hand. he has a moment to see the shock and surprise on the apprentice's face, as fire starts to surround one of the man's hands, but then the shadow blade drives home and the apprentice is slumping to the ground, unconscious.
"Very well done." The wizard says with a nod to Toc. "Dismiss your blade there and we will have our own contest..." he slips the ring from the apprentice's finger and slips it on his own instead.

Toc nods, backing away and tossing the blade away. It shimmers and vanishes into nothing.
When the wizard says to proceed, Toc advances again, still putting on a show, though he’s already tipped his hand so the wizard knows what’s coming. He attacks anyway, another shadowy blade appearing in his hand.... (not recasting, just concentration and BA to summon a new blade) .....

Germain shrugs, "I'm not much of a gambler myself." During the course of the duel, he watches the participants, but keeps an eye on the cultists in case they try to use the opportunity to try anything.
He obviously doesn’t bother and let’s the spell fall. Realizing he’s in a spell battle with a wizard much more powerful than him, and who is able to simply counter any spell he attempts, while being able to drop him with one more simple spell, Toc raises his empty hands. “I surrender. You obviously far outstrip my own talents.”
He slips the ring off and hands it to the wizard.
”Thank you for the good sport. I shall go now and lick my bruises. I hope your apprentice does not hold a grudge.”
(if the wizard is 9th level or higher and has 5th level spell slots for so many magic missiles, and he can counterspell, and the rules only permit spells, and Toc has no counterspell, its literally impossible for him to compete.)
Germain shrugs at the outcome, turning to his client, "You called it correctly. Magic has its limitations, but definitely provides an advantage in most situations."
"Wise of you." The wizard says as he accepts the ring back. "Come and sit with me though, I find that someone with wisdom, as well as magic, is often of more interest to me." He would bring Toc over to sit with him and his still-unconscious apprentice. "You have a good head on your shoulders, just need a bit of experience to get you further along." He looks Toc over, then pulls an old book out from inside his trunk. "This is my old spellbook." He explains, handing it over. "Your ability to realize when you were overmatched has impressed me greatly. Instead of the single spell you would have recieved if you had managed to best me, I will let you have this book of spells, you will just need to take time to copy them into your own book, and gain the experience needed for learning the more advanced ones."
This book contains all of the spells on the mage spell list.
Taviel shrugged, counted out 10gp and gave it to Germain's employer. "Looks like the caravan got one more strong wizard. The show was worth the price."
Toc sits next to the man, and with much surprise accepts the gift. He's silent for a few moments, "This is....a precious gift. I am afraid I have nothing that could hope to match its worth, to gift you in return." He casts message to the wizard (more than once so as-to complete the conversation silently), "Though, if you'll permit me, I should tell you that not everyone in this caravan is as they seem. They wagon there..."(he describes the cultists wagon) "...are being led by some very suspect individuals. We believe them to be part of a cult of dragons and we seek to understand their goals so that they may be countered. Only recently they stole a magical dragon mask. I tell you this, not to ask for assistance, but just so you are aware. As information and service is all I can offer you, I give you this information as a start. So, be wary, this caravan is perhaps not the safety in numbers during your travels that you were hoping it may be. You may call on me at any time for assistance, and if it's in my power to give, I will."

"Well, I think you have a story in there for the telling." The wizard says as his eyes flick about during the messages from Toc. He returns replies the same way. "You may call me Master Thorne." He glances to his unconscious apprentice. Speaking out loud he continues. "Poor Harvin will be sleepign that off for a bit." The two of you change topics, speaking of the world-at large more than dragons and cultists, the wizard clearly steerring the convesation away from such matters, though he has clearly taken note of the individuals and wagons Toc described to him.
Toc learns that the wizard, a Master Valen Thorne, is traveling with his apprentice towards Daggerford, which is many days further North along your route. He is a relic hunter, and has heard of an ancient blade, non-magical, that was recently discovered in an old ruin located in Delimbiyr Vale. He and his apprentice plan on traveling with the caravan only as far as Daggerford, then going their own way, likely after hiring some adventurers in daggerford, taking the Shining Road into the Vale.
The next few days pass by, with the caravan plodding its way Northward.
On the third day since the wizard duel something happens though...
As the caravan moves along a rocky stretch of the road, there is the sound of a loud crack. The wagon directly in front of Ulric suddenly lurches as one of its wheels breaks on a rock. As the wagon lurches several crates come tumbling out of it, one of these breaks open, revealing dozens of beautiful items of jewelry wrapped in wool for protection. Everyone would recognize this as one of the cult wagons they have been watching.
Toc is happy to have the conversation led away, Toc smiles and says he knows some folk who may be able to help, but it will depend on other matters. During the evening, he appraises the group, via message, of the conversation.
He spends a few hours each night copying a couple spells from the book, but quickly runs out of the right components for writing such things. (Copies 4 spell levels worth of spells into his book, with his 200 gold in coin, leaving him close to pennyless.)
From now on, he will tent with the rest of the caravan, being out of money for Inn's. He ensures he'a always within 30 feet of Master Valen Thorne and his apprentice from now on, so that he can help if necessary. When Harvin awakes Toc bows to him and says, "I feel I did not pursue our wizard battle in the conventional manner. I hope there were no ill feelings. My name is Toc, and it is nice to meet you."
A few days later, as the wagon breaks and treasure is spilled, Toc makes his way to within 30 feet of Thorne and Harvin...and waits impassively, looking disinterested in the treasure, but is on guard regardless.

Seeing the wagon in distress, Naroth goes to help clean it up laughing the entire way. In no way does Naroth give his best efforts and exclaims loudly about how much jewels and treasure are in the boxes. Asking the other guards how they acquired so much treasure.,
He will also try to se if he sees his totem in any of the boxes.

Taviel, obviously, did not try to fix the wheel or fix the wagon in any way, but gladly joined the spectators around (a guard has to know what is going on in the caravan) and watched the reaction of people around. They had a visit from assassins already, would be no less interesting to find the future thieve - someone had to pay more attention to the treasure, than others.
