Germain, who took no active part in anything simply checked on a disturbance, remains by his employers side, and does his best to look suspiciously at both the guards and Ulric and the others. If one of the attacking guards passes close by, he'll whisper to him, "What was all that about, a case of mistaken identity? Could be something more sinister, do you have reason to suspect that man?"
The man Germain speaks to frowns at him, but shrugs. "He is pretending to be someone he is not. We know Uwe, and that is not him. I'd watch yourself around him."
The next day sees the caravan moving along once more. The four men who were involved with the confrontation with Ulric the previous night are spotted among those traveling with the caravan, but they stay clear of Ulric and Taviel.
Early the next day another group of adventurers joins the caravan. They were camped on the road from the previous night, and seemed happy to take up with such a large group to travel with. Judging by their boasting, they have bested some of the most ferocious monsters and foes Faerûn has to offer. They look prosperous and they’re full of exciting tales.
The adventurers seem quite friendly with Oyn Evenmor, hanging around his wagon and near Ulric. The merchant seems quite impressed with the group of adventurers, listening to their stories with clear amazement. The next day Ulric finds himself unemployed, as the merchant tells him he has decided to hire on this more experienced group of adventurers instead.
Toc points to Ulric, sending a message, "It's ok bud, it happens to the best of us. Not me of course, I've never been fired, but I'm sure it's happens to other people a lot."
Toc grins playfully at Ulric and continues on his way.

Hearing the stories from the new band of adventurers Naroth would like to see just how accurate their stories are or if they seem to have some other motivation. As something doe snot seem right almost as if they have targeted Ulric's employer.
Taviel was listening too, of course - it was embarrassing a bit but she still loved a good fairytale now and then, not believing a word, obviously (real heroes do not need to boast). But she did recommend her employer to take Ulric, and be cautious of the newcomers. The fool that fired the man was about to find himself in trouble, she just did not want the troubles to spread over her charges.
Germain would try and spend more time with the would-be assailants from the other night. When the other adventurer's show up and take Ulric's job, he'll join them again, "Seems like karma's catching up to him."
As his employer informs him of his dismissal Ulric quietly pulls him aside, "In my experience, skilled warriors do not boast of their feats in this way. Thank you for allowing me to protect you this far. Be cautious with that lot. Safe travels."
Ulric waves his thanks and heads toward the back of the caravan with the other stragglers and hangers on. His earnings thus far expected to be enough to see him the rest of the way.
After two days and nights of rain, lightning, and strange whistling sounds on the wind, you awaken to see that the surrounding countryside is blanketed with fungus. It grows everywhere, including on the road. When anyone steps on a mushroom (it’s nearly impossible not to), it emits a puff of black spores and a moan of pain.
Nature check if you wish to try to identify.
The merchants are terrified of the things and refuse to drive through them, fearing that they may be poisonous or worse. Besides that, the sounds spook the animals and make them impossible to control.
The mushrooms are growing so fast on the rain-soaked ground that a person can almost see them getting bigger. They were the size of champagne corks when first noticed; within an hour, they grow six inches tall, and a foot tall an hour later. Their growth slows down after that, but by then, most people in the caravan are certain that all is doomed.
The group that took over for Ulric are quite certain the end of the world has come. They cower behind their wagon, refusing orders to aid in helping figure out how to get past the mushrooms. After a while of this Oyn Evenmor fires them, amazed at how they had tricked him. He comes to Ulric and offers him his job back, offering to double Ulric's pay.

Out of curiosity (and in order to let off steam in that hard stressful situation) Taviel chose a patch of fungus on the bother with the normal ground (if there is some) and afar from the people, and then checked those shrooms for fire-resistance (with Create Bonfire)

Naroith has no use for fungus and is on edge as the last place he had to deal with fungus there was also a rather nasty creature that almost ate his face off. He will constantly move back and forth near his wagon keeping an eye on the surroundings to see if anything tries to approach. He will also try and keep track of the whereabouts of the recently fired "adventuring group".
You recognize these as a type of mushroom that has a mildly toxic spore it lets off. It is not overly dangerous, but the toxic spore causes those nearby, and who hear the sounds of the spores to break down, almost as if the sounds of pain cause them pain and remorse. it is just a reaction to the toxic spores though. Your hawk would see the mushrooms spread for a distance, but, with a bit of work, the way could be swept clean and the caravan allowed to move forward. it would take 6 man-hours of work, 1 person can do it in six hours, or 3 could do it in 2 hours.
Germain You notice that the mushrooms seem to be simply growing out of the ground in this area. There does not seem to be a specific source for them.
Taviel As your bondfire blossoms among the mushrooms, they let out a sieries of shrieks of pain that fill your ears. Give me a DC 10 Constitution save.
Naroth You are too distracted by the mushrooms, and the memories of them, that you can't even keep track of the newly fired adventurers.
Ulric Once back in your position as bodyguard, you move forward to help examine the mushrooms.

"They are... alive?" Taviel was truly surprised. So much so, that stopped the fire. "Scream horribly too - earsplitting! Not sure we can pass this way."
Taviel was paid for guarding, not sweeping. But would gladly send her "squad" to help with heavy lifting.
Toc shakes his head, "No....they're not alive...it's just the spores they give off...it makes you think that they're suffering. It's just the spores. Let's start clearing the way."
