Tock stands up and says, "So there is no way for you to reconsider your plan? Even after hearing where we come from and why we are doing what we are doing?"
The time on the spell ticks down and Sturdyoak's eyes tighten as he realizes what has happened.

"Hmmm..." the goliath leader says after a short pause. "You chose to parley."
Sturdyoak stands and his group stands quickly with him. Their hands land on their weapon hilts by instinct but none are drawn. The air is tense for 5 seconds, thick with potential for violence. Then Sturdyoak nods.
"Very well," he says. "We will watch while you dig. Then we will escort you from our lands."

Tock breathes out for about a minute straight. Then recalls that deception is always an option and tries to assess the situation from that angle (insight check for seeing if that was a lie: 24 )
“Would you like to watch him dig without being seen? We can do that for you and perhaps one other. Then you would know exactly what he was doing when he thinks he’s unobserved. Might learn more. And he might grumble less, and we’d get out of your lands faster.”Dog says.
Deoending on the response and how Sturdyoak is acting, Dog may try to make conversation about their lands, their people, and the possibility of Dog learning more. He would also offer to spar a bit, nonlethally, if it seems they might be interested.
He seems to be very much sincere. In fact, thus far, Tock detects no duplicity in anything he has said thus far. Sturdyoak appears to be putting everything on the surface.
Sturdyoak pointedly ignores Dog's overtures to connect but he does respond to his offer for subterfuge. "We will stand watch openly. The mage will know we are watching at all times."
Once the party allows it, the goliaths will follow them to the top of the dig site and set up around the perimeter, facing in on the mage digging in the dirt by himself. Finnegan looks up, scowls, but returns to digging, first with trepidation and then with confidence as he finds they do not intervene.
How will everyone in the party situate themselves at this point?
Tock will back off towards their campsite or wherever they have set down their packs or similar. He will keep an eye on things, but otherwise be out of sight.

Finnegan continues his excavations for many hours with the goliaths patiently watching over him. They make no move to interfere and Finnegan quickly learns to ignore their presence. It is dark when the accident happens. A rumbling thunder under their feet signify that something has gone wrong. Calls to Finnegan go unanswered, which could be due to the mage's personality, except looking into his short tunnel reveals that it is filled with rubble. A collapse has occurred but one that appears all too neat in the way that large, obsidian slabs lay criss-cross over the hole descending into the buried laboratory.
Tock tries to estimate how much rubble would be on top of Finnegan.. as in how far down he had tunneled at that time and how much of that hole is filled now.
He will also cast Sending to Finnegan, saying "Are you OK? What happened?"
Tock receives no response as he approaches the dog site again from the camp. The amount of rock and earth on top of Finnegan is anywhere between less than a foot and 20 feet. Nobody really knows how deep Finnegan was when the incident happened.

The obsidian stones appear to be resistant to the spell but molding the earth around the area of the collapse proves fruitful. In fact, it is so fruitful that, after only a minute and four castings of his spell, Martin appears to have carved a path into the laboratory. Peering in, he does not see Finnegan or any sign of collapse inside, suggesting the collapse is entirely contained under the obsidian stones but above the roof of the chamber below. This is a roughly twenty foot space.
Digging sideways towards Finnegan's tunnel reveals the mage is entirely encased in a magic-resistant obsidian box.
“Um. He’s trapped in a magic proof box. One might even say: a booby-trap. Might not be a ton of air in there. Think you can give those stones a big wallop?” Martin says to Dog

(Was he not so subtly re-iterating that they will stick to the offer/plan that they will do the digging?)
Yup
Tock stands up and says, "So there is no way for you to reconsider your plan? Even after hearing where we come from and why we are doing what we are doing?"
"We could reconsider," Sturdyoak says with a gentle smile, "and so could you. That is the nature of disagreements, I suppose."

Dog would help Martin with his mold earth castings, and when they see Finnegan he grumbles about an old fool, and asks if they can heal him.
