Tock says, "Hold on, I'll check it via other means first."
He proceeds to (possibly for the first time ever) cast Blink, wait for it to activate and try to see from the Ethereal Plane how Finnegan is doing and possibly pop into the trap with him to then scoop him up and wait to pop back out again.

I'm going down a rabbit hole here. I have an intuition of how this bizarre spell works but I am vetting it.
...
Okay, I think I have it.
Tock disappears for several seconds and then reappears right where he was. This happens two more times before he cancels the spell.
Tock:
Tock slips into the ethereal plane and walks through the obsidian to see Finnegan unconscious but alive. He is being compressed by the trap leaving almost no room for a companion to join him. The spell returns Tock to the material plane, roughly where he was when he cast the spell. Further examination from the ethereal plane reveals no space on any side of the gnome for Tock to join him in the confined space.
Dog asks Toc if he knows the trap blocks all magical effects. His cape allows him to cast dimension door which doesn’t require touch. He’s willing to try teleporting himself and Finnegan, standing 5 feet away, to a spot ten feet away, if it’s not certain to fail.
Tock says, "Didn't look like there was any space in there to do that. I had the same idea myself. But looks like he's safe for the moment. If nothing else then I can stone shape tomorrow to borrow in there and get him out. Might also be that he'll wake up in an hour or two and gets himself out of it."
He looks around the area. "Why was he tunneling sideways anyway if the chamber was already right there? Anything anyone can spot?"
"I don't need to get inside at all to try it, if I understand this cape well enough. I have to be within about five feet of him. I don't have to touch him at all. Might be worth trying,"Dog says, looking down into the trap, and then the opening to the chamber. "He's really safe in there? I'd rather get out of here, do we look inside so we could maybe transport the chair he was looking for and him, in or out of his box, away from here?"

The slabs of obsidian are definitely wider than 5 feet. These are huge changes of rock.

He was clearly tunneling down when the trap triggered. Tunneling sideways to get to him reveal more obsidian.
Stone shape was already suggested and won't work on the resistant obsidian trap.
On inspection, it does not appear to be air tight, though the seams of where the huge obsidian blocks join do not leave more than a parchment's width of air in.
"I do not care what happens to the gnome," Sturdyoak says. "His demise would be convenient to us. But I find your conversation tedious. Break the rock prison and be done with it."
Cracks and chunks fall away from the obsidian block. It is not much, but it is a start. At this rate, Dog estimates he could break through 6 feet of obsidian in 3-4 minutes.
Dog pounds away on the obsidian with thundering blows while everyone, including Tock, Martin, Ronis, and the goliath tribe simply watch. For 4 grueling minutes, Dog smashes his hammer against stone until he finally breaks through.
Finnegan is alive but unconscious, with numerous broken bones, including his skull, hands, limbs, and ribs. A silence falls over the hills after Dog's incessant hammering ends and the party are left without direction from the unconscious mage.

Tock sees no illusions or invisible items or creatures. Finnegan is definitely stable but unconscious.
Lowering himself into the ancient laboratory, Martin finds everything covered in dust and dirt. Generally the place is well-preserved, however. He immediately spots a trap aimed at the general workspace as well as another in one of the doorways. Avoiding them is easy enough once they are spotted, although he leaves them active for the moment.
It is a sizable space, composed of a small library with some desiccated old tomes, an alchemical room with a workbench littered with broken vials, a cellar long since empty of its stores, a small bedroom with rotted furniture, a privy that thankfully no longer stinks as it must have once smelled, a storage room filled with mechanical parts and more broken vials, a small kitchen, what looks like a study with more rotting furniture, and the primary room consisting of a large workspace filled with several hardy workbenches that have survived the centuries. The workspace has shelves stocked with parts and trinkets, half-finished plans, various tools for woodworking, metalworking, jewelry making, leather-working, alchemy, and more. The workbenches are inscribed with some runes, which seem to be more for convenience to the worker than any kind of danger to an interloper.
Martin manages to uncover the plans that Finnegan was looking for, neatly rolled up next to the primary workbench. He also finds:
Dog thanks Martin, with uncharacteristic brusqueness. He lets Tock handle his portion of the loot, but he asks that about 1,000-1,500 of his share be separated out so he can at last offer it to the goliaths. He carries Finnegan out of the hole, flying with his boots.
"We will depart now, and trouble you no more. Hopefully this little one has learned his lesson. These papers will hopefully help us in this larger fight. Do you wish me to bury this again?"
If so, he will use mold earth to cover the site. He readies the helm of teleportation, unless anyone else has anything to pause for.

(I'm glad I got to make this interesting for the GM :) )
Tock sighs and explains to others the situation - Finnegan seems safe and alive, but there is no space next to him to transport him out.
"Looks like we'll have to take this trap apart.."
Martin changes shape, becoming an enormous warhorse and kicking at the walls of the trap, trying to chip bits off

Tock casts spare the dying on him at first.
"Should I heal him or should we look around first and let him come to on his own time?"
He activates his gem of seeing and looks at eeeverything, including Finnegan.
"Let's look around a bit first and then heal him," Dog says.

Martin manages to uncover the plans that Finnegan was looking for, neatly rolled up next to the primary workbench. He also finds:
9000 GP in an untrapped chest.
Potion of fire giant strength
Potion of healing (superior)
Bag of beans
1 Bead of force
Scroll of protection (5th level Wizard spell)
Martin gathers the treasures, including the plans and returns to the others.
“We have what we came for. You two see if you can make heads or tails of the plans.”
Martin divides the money into 3,000 to each, and keeps the bag of beans. The rest, you all can divide amongst yourselves

( did Martin go through the whole observable complex or was it just the main room? The description mentioned traps at doorways )
Tock bags the rest of the stuff along with 4500 gold.
"I believe we are done here."
