"Wait here for a few minutes, if you would, and breath easy, no one will find us" says Jahren, giving a quick glance from Jezun to Ezhia, although the skilled monk seems to be doing a great job keeping an eye on their prisoner.
Jahren takes 15 or 20 minutes to walk through walls to other offices in this building while looking at papers left out and anything else of interest while also sticking his head inside drawers, cabinets, etc., especially safes. Although it is unlikely that he finds anything worthwhile his spell lasts a long time and he figures he'll learn what he can.
After that Jahren will walk through the exterior walls and try to find a somewhat concealed place outside to leave Chen, Jezun and Ezhia when he drops his spell while he remains inside Bolis's office for a more proper search. This could be an alleyway, behind some crates and barrels, an adjacent empty building, or even the roof if there is a ladder down.
Looking down below, Jahren finds shipping manifests, invoices, and other accounting for a trading company, but nothing particularly unexpected. Jezun and he both poke heads through cabinets, into drawers, shelves, and so on looking for anything untoward but the inability to move things makes the search painfully difficult. Chen looks at the iron stove in the room, not feeling its heat, while keeping an eye on Ezhia. Inside he notes the orange glow of embers and lots of burnt paper, but nothing still legible.
Indeed this place is empty of people however. Sighing to himself he calls the others to follow him out of the building. There is a back alley that runs past the building that is largely deserted so he leaves Ezhia, Jezun, and Chen there, warning them the spell will be dropped and returns to the office. Once there, he drops his spell.
In the alley, Ezhia, Jezun, and Chen become "solid" once more. Ezhia looks around, clearly impressed by the magic...and scrapes his foot on the paving stones as if reminding himself he's solid.
Meanwhile, back in the office, Jahren begins his search in earnest. Though immediately realizes that at least one cabinet in the desk, and one cabinet in the main filing cabinet are locked. (Roll Stealth and Investigation for me please. Roll two checks if you want to pick the locks.)
---------------------------
Toc looks around once more, a bit wistfully, then nods to Mirica, Fianna, and Lacy to join hands. He taps his staff on the soft grass and the world around them shifts and scrambles...as he does so, little bolts of lightning, purple and twisting seem to reach out around them crystals around them and with a seemingly more powerful "WHUMP" the four find themselves standing in the foyer of a large log and stone building. Everyone roll a wisdom save. Fianna, you have advantage to your save. DC is 15. Toc: 18. Lacy: 21

For the briefest moment when you appear....your mind feels disconnected as you glance around at the strangers around you, unsure how you arrived to be here. Mirica looks a little stunned for a moment. Unsure of what's happening, there's a brief moment of confusion, but then the memories suddenly come flooding back and you remember the crystal forest and the Displacer Beasts. You all glance around, a bit stunned for a moment, before Toc eventually clears his throat. "That was a little strange." He glances outside in the bright light beyond a large open doorway. Looking around you see that what you thought was a foyer is actually just a covered room with three walls...but no doors or other exits beyond the one open wall, split by huge log pillars. He motions for you to follow and you all emerge out a fantastic view. You are standing one a wide wooden walkway built across the tops of the trees. In the directions stretch the bright green canopy of the forest, while the other features a drop off like a cliff and the twinkling waters of Lake Sember shining in the sun. A few elves move to and fro here. Below the canopy you can see tree homes, walkways, and stairs wind through the forest of massive dark trees that dwarf the buildings. Far far below, the forest floor is cast in shadow and thin mists crawl through the thin underbrush. Magical, multicolor gems shine with line in the darkness of the forest below, lighting the way in shades of purple, blue, and green. What looks like cave openings show walkways that continue from tree and head straight into the ground, amidst the miriad of fine elven structures that blend tree, wood, and stone and look ancient.
Two elven guards stand to either side of the building you've emerged from. One sees Toc and nods his head smartly, those his eyes glance suspiciously to the others.
Toc looks to Mirica and Fianna. "You are welcome to stay on this level of Semberholme. It will not take me long to find Lacy a place to stay." He turns to Lacy, "Lacy, you are a guest, you should consider this your home, under my protection." He looks back at Mirica and Fianna, "Also...I need to speak briefly with someone while I'm here. But then we should be on our way."
---------------------------
As silent as a wraith, Jahren slips through the room, opening drawers and flipping over papers. His detect magic sees that both of the locked items are not only physically locked, but glow with abjuration magic. As he tries to pick them, he's unable to unlock the desk, but the cabinet lock clicks back with a quiet noise, but still refuses to open. He takes a quick peek in the ashes, and, using the prodder to push aside some ash spots a bit of partially burned paper that, clumped together, has escaped destruction. He pulls it apart and reads a few fragments. "...his....assets....take up to.....asury to pay for.....in touch with.... tethered net for any.... -S" Another fragment reads "…..#52….sufficient for…..the manager…..before dark. …...from both….. -S". Flipping through the book on the desk, he finds a general ledger, he sees lines and lines of money going in or out of the account. The last five entries seem small an uninteresting, but the one before does show a withdrawl of 2000 gold for "general expenses". Note, #52 was the address of the warehouse on Worcester Lane.
In one of the filing cabinets he finds a bunch of paper work regarding a "Stefan's Shipping", and in another he finds "Far Sea Trading" paperwork. The deed for the warehouse at #52 Worcester Lane is filed in the Stefan's Shipping property folder.
Otherwise he doesn't find any information that seems to connect any dots.
If Toc was afraid that Mirica would stubbornly wander off and cause some troubles within the city, he could safely ignore that worry - she was not going to and said as much. "Do you want us to wait for you right here or meet somewhere else?"The question was sincere, she meant it. The was no time to walk in the Feywild, but if they were going to wait, she could as well see what was allowed to be seen in an elven city. "The city looks quite interesting but if you do not allow visitors can observe it from here."
Aware of the prejudice against non-humans, Chen offers to remain hidden in the alley and guard Ezhia if Jezun wants to look around for clues or threats...

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
The dispel magic does the trick. Jahren pulls open the lower drawer. Within he sees a number of items. The first is a wooden chest about a foot wide and deep. Carefully flipping that open he sees a small drawer of precious gems, and two sections full of platinum and gold coins. (Gold: 452, Platinum: 524, Gems: 15 worth a combined 8550 gold) Also in the drawer is a loaded hand crossbow, and a number of papers. They appear to be deeds to a handful of properties in the city, though they all seem small. Houses and a few shops. There is also the deed to two ships. One of them is a ship called the Winter Cloud, the other the Straight Shot. There are also several legal documents here....agreements between Sythe Trading and .... the city for management of the precious gem trade .... for rights to berths...and agreements between other trading companies...one with Thiscan House Exchange...for exclusive division of furs for Thiscan, and Lumber for Sythe. Which....is a bit odd given you've seen manifests for furs in some ships. Hmm, otherwise, none of these papers seem to point at all to any of the dealings with the dragon. Beneath it all he finds a black book. Opening it up...he finds what clearly is some sort of note book, with details of arrangements and fees, , but....its all categorized under the headings of childrens stories, and instead of normal names, all the names are those of ones from the story in question. Though clearly it contains things around town. The latest one in the book is called "Pete's Wolf"...and involves "the wolf" who is hiring men through someone named 'axeman', and apparently involves some 'bait'. Jahren's eyes wander to the story on the previous page called "Reluctant Dragon" has a curious value on the side bar. -16500 axe. Jahren taps his finger on that..hmm....why is that familiar. It's a lot of information, but will be missed if Jahren takes it, and there's simply too much to read in the time he has before people start showing up for work in a couple hours.

Toc nods to Mirica, "You may explore anywhere up above the tree line. Thank you for being considerate." He walks away, heading down a stairway with Lacy. The woodwork that keeps the platform above the trees is lovely, spun about letting some branches flow through and offer some shady areas, while it uses others as part of it's structure. The platform leads all the way to the edge of the tree line. Over two hundred feet below the waters of Lake Sember sparkle amidst the trees that reach out from the shore like jealous husbands, trying to hide the water from the sky. Elven fishing boats dot the lake, but you also see aquatic elves swimming through the water. However, as you look closer, it seems to you that there are places that are deserted. And there are vast areas of the forest around the lake filled with a strange mist...where no elves go. As well, there is a strange shimmer in the sky. Not a mythal...but magic of some sort occasionally shows itself over this place. It's almost an hour before Toc finally returns. "Good news. Coronal Ilsevele is going to send an elven delegation to Hillsfar. She's aware of the dragon activity and so they'll use care, but she is open to an alliance with the First Lord of Yestrel, if indeed he is open to one with the elves. This could be good for the whole region." He glances around, "But for now, we return to Hillsfar ourselves. Are you ready to go?"

Aaand another beautiful place they have to leave in a hurry. Mirica still liked Hillsfar as a city - magic is a great thing, but the solid reliable comfort of handmade buildings and stuff was more trustworthy and could be beautiful too, the only problem was, as usual, those who who create that "stuff", without some of them the city would be so much better... But there was an unfinished business. "I think we are ready."She prepared to another headspinning teleportation.
Fianna accompanied Merica but is quiet and sedate. She too appreciated the beauty of these places but she was also troubled and distracted. How much would be different is they had taken him out of the equation back then... Would anything have been different at all? In the end Fianna knew these were unanswerable questions and she generally adopted the attitude of worrying about the now and allowing such doubts and concerns to pass over her... But usually she did not feel as such an important cog in the machinery as she currently did.
"Yes... Let us return..." Fianna says softly. "Things are still in motion."
((As a player I forgot to mention... But did Fianna remember to use some of her rest in Mirica's Place to get to know the necklace and bracers they had taken off Ezhia?))
Toc nods, glancing around at the elven home. He's about to summon forth the magic when he pauses. "A little over 10 hours ago several men were murdered in my house, and the rest were locked in the basement, and then the red plumes showed up. Fianna or Mirica, would either of you mind scrying on the upstairs to see if it's safe? You won't be able to scry on the basement. If it's not safe, we'll need to choose a new location."
"Scrying is not an ability I currently am granted access to... But I feel confident on our chances against whatever numbers they may have in wait... But I understand you not wanting any larger of a ruckus at your home than necessary..."
"I can do it." Mirica would not mind to stay up here a bit longer - that platforms so far above the ground and closer to the sky were giving and amazing feeling of freedom! - but after the last unfortunate arriving the idea to get inside blind did not sit well with her either. Mast have being safety of the last few hours that made her forget to offer scrying herself.
(Wis save DC 18, scrying the spot at the top of the stairs to the basement? To get the view of the room and what can be checked about down there)
Toc reaches into his pocket, and a moment later there's a twist of reality and a chest appears at his feet. He bends down, and opens it up, passing the crystal ball to Mirica. Fianna and Toc wait, as Mirica walks to a stone bench and sits down. A few elves that were wondering around have stopped to watch the outsiders. She focus' on the crystal ball with her magic, sending her mind through the crystal and out...into the world. Her magical eye appears in the house at the top of the stairs. It's before noon and sunlight shines in through the front curtains illuminating the room. Burnt carpet and walls are especially dark and glaring in the light of day. The front door is closed....the door at the top of the stairs open. The house is quiet. In the window near the stairs a spider spins a delicate web, the rays of the sun glinting on its fine silk. The house appears empty..the basement, from this angle at least, which shows a good third of it, looks empty. Even the oil spilled across the floor seems to have been cleaned up somewhat, only oily stains on fabric remain.
She stands up, handing the crystal back to Toc. He glances to her, "You're welcome to use mine whenever you like of course, but I'm surprised you don't have your own. Maybe you're waiting for someone to give you a nice one as a present." He smiles and places it back in its silk cover and into his chest. A moment later the box vanishes. He turns to Fianna and Mirica, "Alright, let's go home." He glances about at the elves that have been unabashedly watching and says out loud in elven, "Farewell my kin, we travel the paths of magic."
He begins casting the simpler, but more time consuming spell of Teleportation Circle, slowing drawing a circle around them, inscribing the correct sigils...until eventually the chalk begins to glow blue with magic. Then all three are enveloped by magic that twists the world around them. They appear standing within the arcane circle on the floor, its lines glowing blue, though the light rapidly fades from them. The basement is quiet, dark, and empty of people. The golden light of day shines down from the open door at the top of the stairs. You've returned to Hillsfar.
