Rogram feels both at peace and also in great turmoil. The light beckons, and yet he can feel resistance as he moves toward it. Is that a silhouette? Is it his mother?
The half-dwarf gasps, and his eyelids fly open. Karib's magic echoes in his mind, but the words are fading quickly. Rogram sits up, his arms grasping for anything he can wrap his thick fingers around. He blinks, finally recognizing the faces of The Pole and Leda. His mind screams at him to get up, and so he obeys. He takes in a deep breath and looks around at remains of the battlefield. All targets are too far away, so he looks back at Leda again and notes her wounds. He speaks his own words of healing to her and urges her to return to the fight.
OOC: Leda actually hasn't taken any damage yet. Redirected the healing word to the merchant, who is in the worst visible shape.
With Rogram's wounds healed enough by Karib for the bard to awaken, Leda and The Pole add their spears to the fight. The remaining pair of hobgoblins fight with a fury, trading blow for blow despite their lack of numbers. A guard drives a spear through the leg of one, only to take a vicious slash into the shoulder that he keeps only because the links of his chain shirt provide enough protection to stop the blade from tearing clean through. Merric is cut by the other as it parries his sword. Even though Akira sends more arcane missiles into the back of a hobgoblin, they remain standing, indignant to the bitter end.
Health: Two hobgoblins remain. One hobgoblin is grievously wounded. One hobgoblin is wounded.
Akira is severely wounded. Rogram is severely wounded. Merric is wounded. Karib is lightly wounded. One guard is grievously wounded. The merchant is lightly wounded.
Akira grits her teeth through the pain she feels and slows her breath, exhales, then raises her hands in the direction of one of the hobgoblins, unsure of which is in worse shape and sends forth Fire Bolt

Assured that the young half-dwarf will live long enough to run headlong into danger another day, Karib growls and strides towards the remaining threats.
He focuses his anger on the most wounded of the remaining of the hobgoblins, the thought of offering mercy far from his mind as he commands Gond's hammer to do the same.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Reeling from the pain of battle, Rogram has a rare moment of clarity and drops his axe to exchange it for a javelin. He heaves it at the nearest hobgoblin.
Merric grimaces as the hobgoblin parries his blade and delivers a return slice across Merric’s arm. Ignoring the pain, Merric drives the blade of his shortsword forward, trying to pierce the hobgoblin’s armor.
With so many opponents bearing down upon them, the hobgoblins stand little chance. A guard thrusts a spear through the front of one, and Karib's hammer bashes the skull of the other from behind. The grunting and clanging of combat gives way to labored breathing and panting, the exertion of all combatants quite evident.
After everyone has had a moment to catch their breath, the merchant sheaths his rapier and introduces himself. "Lamont Weathersby. To whom do we owe the honor of our rescue?"
OOC: Each character has earned 130 XP for driving off the hobgoblins.
Akira, having labored the rest of the way to the group, introduces herself.

Rogram leans forward, putting his hands on his thighs and breathing through his teeth for a few moments. When he feels like the world has stopped spinning, he reaches down and picks up his axe, securing it to his back once again. He looks down at his arms and chest, taking note of the many wounds from the hobgoblin's weapon. He was lucky to be alive. He can't help but grin for a second before grunting once again as something twinges. He pulls himself forward to retrieve his javelin as well, overhearing the introductions. He decides to just listen, fearing his voice might give away just how badly he feels.
As the last hobgoblin falls, Karib lets out a long breath then closes his eyes offering his thanks to Gond. The radiant hammer seems to slowly vanish as he draws a breath and turns his attention to Rogram.
A few more deep breaths follow before the pulsing veins on his head recede and he finally walks over to the young half-dwarf.
Rogram smiles again, this time at the cleric. "I suppose I should thank you," he says, sounding a little resentful. "I could hear the echoes of your magic pulling me from Moradin's Forge." He looks away as if he's reliving some memory. Finally, he takes a deep breath, looks back at Karib, and reaches up to slap the human on the arm in a show of camaraderie.
Karib shakes his head, "No need for thanks, lad, just think on my words: Your father needs you to stay on this side of the Veil of Souls."
Then he smiles and glances around at the bodies of their slain enemies, "The plan was a good one, but it was not only the enemy who were taken by surprise." He flexes his shoulders and winces, "Sprinting in full armour...I'm amazed I made it."
Finally, he looks around at the others trying to assess who else might be in need of healing before looking up to the sun to assess the time of day, "I don't know about you lot, but I could do with a rest."
"Terrible spot you found yourself in. How did you find yourself in this predicament?”
Lamont looks back over his wagon and sighs. "Urshani hobgoblins. The bastards are good with a bow, I'll give them that. They took down our horses before we even saw them and stranded us. We had just enough time to fortify ourselves before they closed in and return their fire with crossbows ourselves. Once we started shooting back they seemed content to keep us under siege. I'm glad you all came along when you did. Come sundown, we were sure we'd all be dead without light to see our targets," he says.
"I don't know about you lot, but I could do with a rest."
"Yes, come with us," Leda tells Lamont and his guards. "You can introduce yourselves to the merchants leading our caravan and we'll see if we can get you moving again." On the way back to the wagons, Leda pulls Rogram aside. "You bought us the time we needed. You have useful abilities, and that was good work," she says, "But next time, fill the rest of us in on the details." The Pole grunts in agreement next to her.
Orvustia gasps at Akira's condition upon the group's return, and Tyjit asks, "Y'alright boss? These stubby little legs couldn't get me there in time to be of much help."
Arietta Innevar throws her arms around Rogram, peppering him with pecking kisses all over his face. "Are you alright? That was so brave, I can't believe--that was incredible! Are you hurt?"
Edhelri and Beyd pull Merric and Karib into the discussions with Lamont Weathersby and his crew. The merchants call for further break while any injured are attended to, and along with Lamont, make their way among the other travelers. "Does anyone have a horse they are willing to sell? I have enough money to pay market price," Lamont calls out.
Rogram gives Karib another nod, his face showing he understands and somewhat reluctantly agrees with him. He's slowly making his way back to the wagons, rolling his shoulders and dragging his heavy feet, when Leda approaches.
"You bought us the time we needed. You have useful abilities, and that was good work," she says, "But next time, fill the rest of us in on the details."
The half-dwarf looks at The Pole and back to Leda. A flurry of emotions fight for control, but his eyes finally calm, and he gives a curt nod. He has heard a similar sentiment from his Pa not a few times before. "I hear you," he says, sounding tired. "I forgot there's a chain of command. I'll grab your ear next time." The vision of the two of them kneeling over him when Karib's magic had pulled him back from the light comes to mind, and he smiles. "Thank you both for being there when I fell under the goblin's sword." He slaps The Pole's arm. "You're good comrades. I hope to return the favor should you need it."
As Leda and The Pole move away, Arietta Innevar appears and throws her arms around Rogram, peppering him with pecking kisses all over his face. "Are you alright? That was so brave, I can't believe--that was incredible! Are you hurt?"
The swordsman closes his eyes and grins in response. Suddenly, his injuries don't hurt quite as badly. "I'm fine, I'm fine," he assures her, a chuckle escaping. He takes her hands and eases her away so he can look into her face. "The skirmish is over. I'm still on my feet. It's nothing a good rest won't heal." Still holding her hands, he swings their arms out so he can get a good look at her. "Are you OK? Did you stay out of danger?"
As they get back, Akira pats Rogram on the shoulder and quietly says, “Your bravery is the making of legend. However legends need to live longer to be written about.”
Akira stops to telepathically reach out to her familiar to do a scan of the surrounding area. She then makes her way back to her wagon with the help of her dwarven guard and does a thorough check in with Nyerhite, Orvustia, and Tyjit.

Karib looks at Lamont and draws a breath. While he has a horse, he's not really sure it's in any condition to pull a wagon, nor is he comfortable sending it to a new owner who may be no better than the last.
He turns to Merric, speaking quiety, "Help me check the dead horses will you? What do you think...does it look like he kept his horses well, before the end?"
Bending down, he tries to assess if the animals were well-fed or wounded before the battle, or show any other signs of mistreatment.
Seeing the others are safe, Merric recovers his arrows and does a quick search of the hobgoblins for any useful equipment, including extra arrows of their own. He move to check on Rogram, but gives him space as Arietta arrives and leaves him to he capable care. Instead, he moves to help Karib inspect the dead horses before being drawn into the conversation with Weathersby. “I am glad we came by when we did. I am Merric Greenleaf, but you can call me Merry.”He gives the merchant a wide smile. “Where are you heading? And what did those hobgoblins hope to take from you?” He nods toward the wagon.
Arietta smiles and pushes Rogram's shoulder away playfully. "You know we weren't in any danger. Not with all their attention on your broad shoulders," she says.
While Akira checks in with Nyerhite, whose boisterous comments of "Akira my dear, that was magnificent!" can be heard from a fair distance, Karib and Merric examine the fallen horses. They do appear to have been struck down while in very good health, and there are no indications of undernourishment or mistreatment.
“Where are you heading? And what did those hobgoblins hope to take from you?”
"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Merry, and I'm indebted to your for your assistance. You have quite the aim with that bow; puts my men to shame, really," Lamont jokes. "We're on our way to Baldur's Gate. I imagine the hobgoblins weren't even aware of what they were ambushing, but we're carrying a load of leather for a tanner in the city."
OOC: Pausing here for the outcome of Karib and Merric's investigation.
