"I wasn't at the farms. I went into the town," one man answers Smoke. The woman and another man similarly shake their heads, but the other man answers, "My group hit one farmstead, sir. We killed the ones what put up a fight, yeah. That's what we was told, though, the ones what fight don't make good workers."
When Rogram makes mention of the kobolds' deceit, the raiders shoot looks of disgust over toward the creatures. "That sounds about right. Don't worry, we keep them at a distance," the woman responds.
The kobolds quiet as soon as Thia yells, and she gets an answer of "Uhh...We take loot, we give to hoard? We kill and stab?" from the kobold that she singled out, but the others quickly jump in with their own shouts of agreement or disagreement, quickly becoming a chaotic jumble of voices once more. The creatures are just as disorganized with their responses to her deception - some agreeing wholeheartedly before arguing with others that shout back that the "dragon lady" specifically told them to leave the humans alone.
For Thrax:
You do not detect any sign of dishonesty from the woman in what she has said so far.
Rogram scowls as he walks up to another cacophony of jumbled Draconic. He's itching to stick his blade into one of the raiders, but he takes a deep breath and rolls his shoulders instead. He looks at Thia. "Did you ask them how far away the army is?"
OOC: DM, so how many humans and kobolds are there? I know Yevele is standing between the weapons and the humans, but would she be blocking their view of the weapons?
"Not much point," Thia responds to Rogram. "I doubt you'd get a consistent answer from these idiots if you asked them how many of them were sat here now. Probably a better question to ask the humans." Gods it is tempting to stick a short sword into one of these mangy dogs. Rogram's anger must be rubbing off on me.
Smoke grits his teeth behind the cloth as he hears the raiders response.
Gathering himself again he responds as calmly as he can Yes, we need followers as workers. Speaking of which our forces also need to be kept in line or disposed of.
My master does not tolerate weakness any more than insubordination. He points to the human that mentioned having killed farmers. You will take back control. Since you seem to know the kobolds might attack you this calls for immediate action. Kill two of the kobolds. That will show them who is in command.
He waits only a second before adding Well? Go on.
Then looks to the other humans playing it off as a normal everyday request. The rearguard you mentioned, have you seen them? They should have stumbled upon this camp. Perhaps we should speak to them next.
He turns his attention to Thrax with the last remark in seek of approval and to give less options for the human to talk back about the killrequest.
OOC: From #796, there are four humans and eight kobolds:
When you arrive, four humans sit around the fire where the remains of a cooked dinner continue to smolder. Their weapons, scimitars, rest nearby against a boulder. Fifty yards away, where the low area turns into gradual hill, eight kobolds look to be tearing into dinner themselves.
As for the weapons, Yevele is basically 5 feet from the raiders and their weapons, directly between them, and she's not blocking their view of them entirely.
At the request to kill two of the kobolds, the raiders share furtive glances between one another. "No, we're still a mile behind them, I'd expect," one man answers of the rearguard, before the woman cuts him off. "Wait. Who did you say you were again?" she asks.
OOC: I'm going to assume that at about 50 yards, neither Rogram nor Thia heard that question.
Rogram is becoming impatient. From what he can tell, their plan to seed an argument between the humans and the kobolds doesn't seem to be working. He wished he knew more about kobold culture so that he might exploit that knowledge in some way. "We should just keep moving," he says quietly to Thia.
Smoke straightens his back a bit shocked at the womans response.
I did not give my name. They call me Smoke if you must know. He says arrogantly And my master as i mentioned is Thrax the Terrible. Do you not know your halfdragon superiors? You are part of this army are you not?
Smoke places his arms at his hips close to his rapier but not on it to avoid raising more suspicion but to be ready if needed. As you said yourself, we cannot use those that cannot follow orders. referring to the farmers that got killed for resisting and not making good workers. But i wonder who here has trouble with the orders.. the kobolds.. or you.
Thraxstands still as a statue as his eyes dart from one raider to the next. He maintains a stoic complexion, but his reptilian mind races to thoughts of violent combat. He loses himself in his own head as Smoke continues speaking, and considers several different tactics to eliminate each of the raiders. He perks up and focuses when he hears the raider comment on the position of the main army.
"ENOUGH!" he barks suddenly after letting Smokes ominous last words hang in the air. "We have wasted enough time with this one, many more units to inspect before the dawn. Make haste Smoke! Gather the others and march out. Thrax the Terrible waits for no man."
Yevele remains silent throughout this time, standing silently while looking at the ground. When Thrax orders to march out, she will remain standing between the humans and their scimitars until the other members of the party have passed beyond the humans. She will then slowly turn and walk away, taking a last glance at the humans when she is half way between the humans and the kobolds.
Thia slowly and subtly reaches her hand into a pouch at her side. She feels around for some rose petals she knows to be in there and when her fingers locate them she grasps them. Her mind focuses on the words needed to incant a Sleep enchantment and she makes sure she can visualize the location to drop it so as to catch as many of the kobolds in it as possible.
She mutters quietly to Rogram, in dwarvish, "If it all kicks off I am going to try and put these baby dragons to sleep." I guess I'm ready should this all go south.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Smoke Deception: 21 Thrax Deception: 2
"Look, if this is a test I'm not falling for it," the woman responds. "I'm not surviving the wrath of...Thrax the Terrible," she says with air quotes, "Only to get gutted by Cyanwrath because we fell for some shmuck trying to get us to disobey orders."
Two of the men look visibly nervous, their eyes darting between Smoke and the weapons lying against the rock nearby.
The remaining raider offers, "We're sorry, sir. It's just that we wasn't told much about reportin' to no one else, and well...we all saw Cyanwrath beat down that town's best defender. I don't want to end up on the sharp end of his spear, neither."
Thia turns to Rogram and says in dwarven. "I'm taking initiative on this one. Maybe we can get the drop on them. Let's see how many we can take out. Leave the sleeping ones and focus on killing the awake ones as fast as possible." Thia casts Sleep on the goblins.
OOC: Hoping for a surprise round but appreciate the humans at least maybe too alert for that...
Yevele will remain in her spot between the humans and the scimitars. But, if any of them try to get to their weapons she will hit them with her quarterstaff.
With a shout and an arcane gesture, Thia sends three of the kobolds into a magical slumber. Suddenly the remaning conscious kobolds are staring at their slumping companions, and the humans at the fire crane their necks as they witness the spell. They leap to their feet, but lack the speed of their unanticipated opponents.
Round 1 Order: Players <===== Thia has acted for this round. Rogram, Smoke, Thrax, and Yevele each still have their turns. Enemies
Placement: Rogram and Thia are 150 feet away, near eight kobolds. Three kobolds are asleep. Smoke, Thrax, Yevele, and the four raiders are all within movement range of one another.
Yevele will attack one of the raiders with her quarterstaff Attack: 18 Damage: 5
Following that attack, she will expend one ki point to unleash a flurry of blows on the raider (or an adjacent one, if the first one is dead): Attack: 9 Damage: 4 and Attack: 12 Damage: 5
After the attacks, Yevele will try and position herself so that she can use her reaction to attack any raider trying to get past her and get to their weapons. She will use the quarterstaff for the reaction attack.
