Rogram pulls himself free of the sticky substance, while Smoke and Yevele prepare for an incursion that does not yet come. Karib calls back to them from the far end of the cavern.
For Karib:
Your words don't quite seem to have the intended effect on the creatures. Rather than surrender, they scramble to draw their swords while one grabs a makeshift ladder and props it up against the ledge to climb up toward you.
As the ladder settles into place, flames leap up around its base and Karib moves toward the top of the ladder. He crouches down and stands back from the edge hoping to gain a little cover while he waits to block the path of any who reach the top. As he waits, his staff once more assume a more menacing aspect.
(( Anything flammable the fire (presumably the ladder) is ignited and anyone in it needs to make a 14 DEX save or take 8 damage (rolled in log) ))
Yevele will continue moving to the left, but, will move up closer to the edge to see if she can see anyone. When she sees the flames created by Karib, the monk will look closely in that area for foes. If she sees anyone, she'll shoot them with her bow.
OOC: Pressed for time but I want to get this moving again now that I'm back so I'll just summarize then once Rogram has acted upon what he sees and Smoke has taken his turn I'll further describe, resolve, and advance. I've also rolled a longbow attack for Yevele on her sheet.
There is a shallow pit at the east end of the ledge where four kobolds are setting up a ladder to approach and attack (three kobolds after Karib has caught it and the ladder on fire). They're visible to Rogram, Karib, and Yevele at the edge of the ledge.
Smoke moves forward as the others are as well taking out a 2nd dagger in his other hand and trying to get close enough to get in range of those spotted by Karib.
He moves as swiftly as he can to throw his daggers at the kobolds and attempts to move backwards afterwards to keep himself away from harm.
Movement: To get in range of 20ft from the kobolds and then back if he can (Using Feline Agilty to double movement Action: Dagger throw (in rolls thread) Bonus action: Offhand dagger throw (Inspiration still on Rogram from last turn)
OOC: Mechanically, the bottom of the pit would be 10 feet below the ledge.
The nearest kobold erupts into flame, along with the base of the ladder it holds, and its companion shrink back against the wall, lobbing their rudimentary bombs up toward the party. All are able to dodge the sticky substance this time, knowing what's coming, and the meager flames do little more than singe Karib and Yevele in the front.
Round 2 Order: Kobolds Players <=====
Placement: Three kobolds are 10 feet below the party in the shallow pit.
Health: Smoke is badly wounded. Karib is lightly wounded. Rogram is lightly wounded. Yevele is lightly wounded.
Yevele will shoot one of the kobolds with an arrow and misses
OOC the roll is on my character sheet, and is a miss with an 8. Also, in moving to the left, I was trying to have Yevele move away from the ladder. If the squares are a 5' on a side, I would have her be standing about 20 feet away from the ladder.
Seeing the ladder ablaze, Karib grunts in satisfaction then moves forward far enough to see the other kobolds. He then re-summons his fire, hoping to catch two or more of them in the blaze, before moving back and crouching down to reduce the risk of reprisals.
(( DC 14 Dex save or take 8, 1 and 1 damage (depending on the total number affected, rolled in log) ))
Smoke will try to keep his distance as best he can and call out to the kobolds.
We are greater in number, give up now before be put in a slumber!
He then tries to move close to the wall once more in hopes of finding some cover there.
Movement: only to get to nearest wall (range of 50ft or so from kobolds) Action: Vicious Mockerydc 14 wis vs one of the kobolds for 3 dmg (see diceroll thread).
Within the pit, one kobold falls into Karib's created flame, roasted quickly to death, while another is painfully affected by Smoke's verbal magic. It screeches and falls dead to the ground in front of its only remaining companion. Yevele's arrow misses the creature, but it drops to the ground in surrender, trembling as it backs against the wall with its hands in the air.
OOC: Each character has received 25 XP for defeating the kobolds.
The fire surrounding the kobold is quenched as it falls, leaving only the smell of burned hair and flesh. "I warned the little buggers. Sometimes..." Karib shakes his head and looks away, uttering a prayer to Gond that he see their souls to wherever it is they need to go.
Having now advanced further than before, he picks up a small stone which starts to emit light, then tosses it into the distant areas of the pit, watching what it reveals as it goes and where it lands. He then thrown stones in other directions, hoping to get a sense of the size and occupants of the pit.
"Only evil can come of those eggs," he says slowly, his brows furrowing a little.
(( Stone can go 60' and do damage, so guessing maybe further if just tossed for range, and emits light for 20' then dim for 20' ))
The stones tossed by Karib light individual sections of the cavern, before going dark as light is cast on other stones. The full extent of the area below is not quite fully revealed by the temporary light, but the back wall appears to be between 40-60 feet away from the base of the steps.
In response to Rogram, the kobold meekly points toward the ceiling in the direction of the pit, preceded barely by the disconcerting grinding of stone. The cavern rumbles slightly as an entire stalactite shifts from its position on the ceiling, slowly approaching the party.
Incredibly, the stalactite opens a large, stony eye and a gnashing mouth. It speaks, a horrifyingly grating sound, barely intelligible beyond what sounds like shifting and falling stone. "CeaSe tHis ligHt," it grates. From a half dozen nubs protruding from its form, the creature extends long tendrils, each extruding to well over 30 feet in length.
"YoU aRe noT liKe tHe othErS," the creature postulates aloud.
As the voice echoes through the cavern, Karib looks around trying to find the source. His eyes eventually settle in the peculiar creature clinging to the roof.
"You are correct, sir. We are not like the others. Were you their prisoner, or perhaps something else?" His mind is racing, trying to recall details of any such creature.
The creature laughs again, the sound of the grating stone rattling your eardrums painfully. "I aM no pRisonEr," it states, its tendrils waving in multiple directions, covering nearly the entire distance of the cavern.
For Karib:
This is a roper, a creature you've only ever heard tales of in horror stories of the Underdark. Known to feast on whatever they can catch and seize, it is stunning that this one is capable of any intelligence, let alone speech. In tales that you've heard, ropers tend to strike by surprise, using their appearance as stalagmites or stalactites to blend in until unwary creatures come close enough for them to be grabbed by roper's tentacles and drawn in for the kill.
Karib involutarily steps back a short distance. He glances a little nervously at the others, then addresses the Roper. "I see, well, then perhaps we can come to some sort of agreement? We have no desire for more fighting."
After the battle Smoke will collect his daggers, and with the creature speaking to them will attempt to stay a bit in the back.
His eyes will roam the ceiling for other stalactites potentially moving.
Smoke will make a mental note of it disliking the light as he waits its answer to Karib. Meanwhile Smoke bends through his knees a bit making himself smaller as he sees the large tendrils strech out.
