“He’s actually a fey creature, on this plane of existence he has the form of an owl. I’m still trying to find the right name for him though.” Explains Signis, sucking his bitten finger as he hefts his pack. “I’m sorry about your friend- did you lose them recently?”
"No, we didn't lose her like that,"Serwa says. "She's with some other escorting a local criminal to face trial in a larger city. Far as I know, Tomora is still breathing, it'll be a while before Kelemvor claims her."
Signis sticks close to the paladin as they walk along, with his owl familiar sweeping through the forest in wide circles around the party. "Do you think it will really come down to fighting?" He whispers. "I know a few tricks, but I've only really been involved in one fight, and that was when they jumped us on the way into town. It's different when you know it's coming."
"I dunno. Last time the goblin's second in command was eager enough to cut a deal to save his skin. I don't know how he'll try to talk this one away, but I wouldn't be surprised if he does,"Serwa says. "Given that he's broken his word once, or at least it looks that way, I don't know what he can say that will buy him another chance, but we'll see. We'll probably end up killing a bunch of them, though, so it's probably best to get in the head-space now. Aster's also ex-military, and a medic, he might be able to provide some advice on the mindset needed.
Tactics wise, if you're not comfortable wading into a melee yourself, there's still ways to be useful. If you have spells, use 'em, if you're decent with a bow or crossbow, shoot it, maybe even just distracting an enemy to Help someone else land a hit. There's always a way to do something. Just don't die. I really don't want to have to start that parchment over with the tally marks."
After responding to Signis, Serwa looks ahead for Alkyn - and finds nothing. "That guy's a hell of a scout. Glad he's on our side."
((I have to log off for the day, having some home issues and it may be hectic over the next few days, so if posts slow that will be why. When things break they all break at once. Apologies in advance for any delays.))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Xianon Lathalas
Quiet through breakfast, Xianon finally breaks his silence as the team gets on the road. "Tomora," the little elf explains with a puckish grin, "decided it was safer to escort a ruthless crime lord through goblin-infested woods than to stay with me and Serwa here." He shifts his pack slightly on his back and begins using his walking stick. "I'm sure it had nothing to do with our fearless leader's tally sheet, though," he assures the newcomers. "More likely it was the fact that I couldn't find soap until this morning."
As the company moves further from civilization and further into the woods, he quiets down and keeps alert for any sign of unwanted company. He also keeps one eye out for Alkyn.
The journey to the goblin lair will take about a full day, and there are more than goblins infesting these woods. I will need a d20 roll and a d12 roll from Serwa, no modifiers. I also need a perception check for Alkyn.
Let's have our scout make those rolls in Serwa's absence; there's no use in waiting for her if we end up not finding anything, anyway. One d20 and one d12, no modifiers.
((Just as a brief update, the various home repairs are ongoing which has been extremely hectic, took time away from work and now I am playing catch up on work things while the home remains a construction zone. Still not sure on my ETA of when I'll have time to return to regular posting, but the game is not forgotten, just extremely busy and stressed at the moment. Again, apologies. I don't want to slow progress of the game for everyone involved, so feel free to do whatever is needed for the story - bot my character, create a scenario where they are pulled away temporarily, whatever you feel is best to progress the game. I am hopeful all this will pass and things will return to normal.))
Iz, you certainly don't need to apologize, but thanks for keeping us updated.
The party spots tracks, and not something found in a city. It's more of a trail, a long line of flattened grass and broken brush bloodied by something heavy. The path weaving between the trees, and tufts of animal skin can be found in briars dotting the trail. Based on the direction of the flattened grass, whatever made it is moving in the same general direction as the party.
Alkyn will try to help Sinsil, pointing out the way he was planning to go and anything else he noticed. "Looks big" he says (helpfully). "Were there more than one?"
He waits as Sinsil examines the scene, and speaks in hushed tones, "City man myself. Not much knowledge of the wilds, except what you need to know when running for your life from goblins, that is."
He smiles weakly, then focuses his attention on assisting Sinsil. he is clearly curious about Sinsil's methods.
Signis will send the owl up to gain an aerial view of the scene, then investigate for footprints, examine the scraps of fur remaining and look for any tooth or claw marks. (Not sure if DM wants a nature or investigation check, so will roll later).
Go ahead and give a survival check, Stuntbunger, with advantage from Alkyn's help. And Stuntbungler, please add your character to the campaign here. The sudden name change from Signis to Sinsil has me a little disconcerted.
Shading his eyes from the westering sun, the wood elf frowns skeptically at the trail left by the...slugs. But as he went straight from the city to the monastery, he shrugs and yields to those with more knowledge of these things than he. "The goblin cave is in that direction, too. Odd. It's wet, though. Maybe..." he shrugs again. "Anyway, we're almost there. You two haven't had a decent rest since your last goblin adventure," he says to Alkyn and Signis, "so if you'd like to pitch camp and wait for morning, I'm game."
(( How is Alkyn holding up? He would vote for pushing on if he could, and crash afterwards; if continuing would result in exhaustion, he would vote for getting away from the slug trails and campibg ))
Alkyn tilts his head to one side and frowns, "Slugs, you say? If there's one thing I know about slugs....at least the small ones...is that they leave a slime trail."
He scuffs the ground with his boot looking for any sign of slime, before shrugging and looking back at Signis, "And you are an arcanist, right? Have you ever...actually...you know...traveled the wilds before?"
He holds up his hands placatingly, "I ask, just for information. You are the ...err...expert here."
To Xianon he says, "If it were a human...establishment...I would vote for pressing on -- the hours before dawn are the best time for surprise. But with Goblins, I am unsure."
(( Does he have any idea about their sleeping habits? ))

Alkyn laughs out loud as Serwa's comment about the parchment, then responds to her remark about Xianon, "I shall scout as well...lead on."
With that he does his best to blend into the forest as they move back along the cart track.
Stealth: 22
He surprises even himself. Do I really need to impress these people? He wonders.
Once he is down to "business", Alkyn's well-worn habits kick in and his fatigue falls away. Or perhaps it's the "brown drink".

Sinsil would want to closely examine the tracks to try to learn more about this creature.

(oops, Sinsil is the wizard in the campaign I DM for. Fixed it!)
Survival- 14
"I'm pretty certain this is actually a swarm of tiny creatures, such as slugs. We are completely safe" Says Signis confidently.
