Krom nods "Yes, that's what I meant Xerophon, each step of this ritual is like a key. We need to find the eight keys, eight messages." The dwarf turns towards the dragonborn "What about asking to learn the message required for the third step?"

"I will do it. " says Vellynne. "The opportunity to use such an artifact is one I do not wish to pass up. So much could be learned from such an object. It is items like this that I have come to this place to find."
Vellynne steps up to the ball and places her hands onto the Crystal surface. She looks intently in and all of the eyes suddenly turn to her.
"Show me the missing words that were on the wall." She speaks as she looks in to the crystal ball.
As she asks her body goes rigid and he face dips closer to the surface.

Rhogar bristled at Vellynne seeming initial sidestepping the issue of the crystal's usage. But having played a part in the confusion about 'keys', the dragonborn could only grimace and suddenly find interest in studying a nearby wall for a time... until Vellynne stepped up to the ball. His idle interest quickly turns into wide-eyed surprise, and before he knew it, he was rushing to the wizard's side ready to catch her if she looked about to fall with one hand while the other readied the staff to smash into the crystal ball!
But with the others likely closer at hand and seeing to Vellynne, Rhogar's gaze one way or another turned to the crystal ball, searching for any signs of a new and disturbingly familiar eye joining the mass within it.
"What a monstrous device. Effective, perhaps, but-..." He trails off there glaring at the thing, before turning to Vellynne looking both sympathetic and guilty. "M-master Krom. I don't suppose you have a yet a miracle prepared for-..."He leaves the question hanging there, but looked hopeful to the cleric of the party,.

Krom looks at Chill and Rhogar and shakes his head "I'm sorry, but that kind of miracle is way far beyond my capabilities. I cannot restore what has been taken by that monstrous artifact." says the dwarf in an apologetic tone.
"But maybe, within this city, we might find an arcane item capable of such feat." adds, with an hint of optimism.

Rhogar looks inside the crystal ball and he does indeed see a familiar eyeball floating inside.
"Does it require an eye every time someone uses this thing or what?" Xerophon asks with horror at what just happened.
Krom and Kazri are able to patch up Vellynne enough that she is no longer bleeding.
"Thank you. But I cannot go on with you any further. If you could lead me back to the dryad in the glade I could sit with her. I am more of a hindernace than a help at this time. There at least I will be safest. More safe than waiting anywhere in this city."
Vellynne sounds bitter and angry but also resolved.
Rhogar's expression turns grim at the news from Krom. In listening to Vellynne, he's again struck briefly with guilt. But seeing her resolved -- bitter and angry, but accepting of her circumstances rather than lashing out at others, he couldn't help admiring the woman a little. "Indeed, Mr. Xerophon. And this I believe we can most certainly do, Ms. Vellynne. And while there, we might as well as call it a day anyhow and further discuss how we might proceed."He quickly holds up his hands in a gesture of surrender. "Obviously, we have a guarantee way of narrowing down the location of the rest of the information we may seek, if nothing else. But, I imagine a such a 'shortcut' will be a last resort going forward. And who knows. Perhaps the primal magic of the Dryad might be an alternate solution to Ms. Vellynne's current, uh... predicament.. *ahem*.. So, uh... shall we?"He gestures back in the direction of the door.
Krom nods as he finishes to patch up Vellyne "Yes, let's head back to the Dryad's groove. We all need resting." The dwarf gestures at the crystal ball with his hammer "Those Netherese wizards were indeed crazy, I should smash that thing with my hammer." says angrily as the group leaves the room.
(Not sure if it’s worth to ask the Professor if there is anything that can be done about her eyes.)
”Very well then. Perhaps Gorrah can make you company as well.” Kazri asks Oli to slowly guide Vellynne. “If we gain access to the tower. Would you like us to fetch you?”

You make your way down the stairs and out of the tower. You walk back out of the city towards the ice bridge. You cross the bridge and head up the passage and a short time later you reach the dryads Grove of trees.
Working your way to the center you find the dryad and explain what isn going on. She is sympathetic to Vellynne's situation. You can tell though that she is pleased to have somebody stay with her.
When you choose to rest Vellynne is able to use her magic to cast Leomund’s Tiny Hut and provide a safe place for you to rest.
Krom spends part of his rest checking the group's equipment and executing, when necessary, minor repairs and adjustments. "Without a proper forge this is the best I can do, but it should be more than sufficient for completing task. " says the dwarf after finishing his work.
"I doubt that hostile creatures will dare to venture into this enchanted grove, but nevertheless let's keep our guard up." adds Krom while preparing his bedroll. "Tomorrow, hopefully, after paying a visit to that observatory, we should be able to learn one of the steps of the ritual."
In the morning, Kazri approaches Vellynne. "Ms. Harpell, I would like to apologize. If I had known the cost, I would have volunteer to touch the eye myself. I am not sure if there is anything that can be done to restore your vision. However, know that if there is, you can count on my aid if needed. Of course, provided we survive this mission first." She gently pats on Vellynne's shoulders.

When the group arrive at the grove, a content looking Gorrah hardly away from the Dryad's tree to acknowledge their presence. Only at the mental insistence from a concerned Rhogar does she fly over to convey-- in her own crude, but telepathic way -- the stories she shared with the Dryad of clearly exaggerated past adventures. Curiously enough, no matter the setting of the story or with any care for maintaining a consistent flow to the story at hand, she seems to veer in the direction of comparing the quality of random fruits with that of the Dryad's tree, and finding them wanting in retrospect. Whether or not she's actually has been given a chance to try any of the Dryad's fruits prior to the party's arrival is up in the air. Maybe...?
"Agreed, Master Krom. And as always, thank you. 'fraid I've gotten a fair bit rusty with weapon maintenance over the past, oh, how long has it been now? Month? Two? Hmph! Where does the time go."Rhogar chuckles as he hands over Rhozavixx, the handaxe both crafted and gifted by Krom in the past. The weapon has clearly not seen much use since then, but had been maintained all the same... as best as a non-dwarf/smith has been able to manage.
At Kazri's later lament, Rhogar looks thoughtful. "... Well, it would be an excessive use of its power, assuming we managed to control it any feasible capacity. But should we gain access to the mythallar, I bet that would have plenty of potent to reverse even the cruel cost of an artifact." He says offhandedly."Hn. Food for thought! Night everyone."With that, Rhogar slipped into his sleeping bag, dragging in a reticent inside with him for the evening (or at least, until it was their turn to take watch, as per Krom's word of caution).
Come the morning of the next day, and following the usual preparations out of the Dragonborn, Rhogar asks Vellynne plainly if she would like the added company of Gorrah, and as a possible means to reach out to the party should the sending stones not be available.

Xerophon also speaks up. "I will stay here as well. I am willing to walk back to the ice bridge with you and point out which buildings are which to aid you in your search. But there is nothing left in the city for me and I do not want to return."
"Do not lose hope yet, Vellynne. We will do all in our power to restore your sight." says Krom with firm conviction, placing a reassuring hand on Vellynne's shoulder.
The dwarf nods to Xerophon, appreciating the offer of help. "Your assistance is most welcomed, you have our thanks." Krom then gets up, collects his gear and turns to the rest of the group "Shall we go my friends? The observatory awaits."

Vellynne screams suddenly, a ghastly cry of horror and pain, and she releases her hands from the crystal ball and grabs her face.
"My eye! My eye!" She sobs, "It is gone, I cannot see!"
She removes her hands from her face. Where her one good eye, the other already lost and covered by an eye patch, an empty socket remains.
"I saw a vision, it showed me where the missing piece is, in a tower with a large telescope. Due north from here."
Xerophon speaks,
"That would be the observatory."
