ooc: If you don't mind, I'm going to take a bit of license and say the Serpent's Tongue is ready in the morning so Aelar can attend the training with his friends and get familiar with his new weapon. Can you give me the stats for it? Also, is it DEX or STR based-I'm hoping DEX) :). If you don't have any, here is what I suggest, based on some research: 1D8+X Damage (standard flail damage); if he hits, he can use a bonus action to make an attack with the 2nd head to do another 1D8 damage.
Aelar is up early, slipping out of the room he shared with Leon. He grabs a hearty breakfast of eggs, some bread smeared with honey and a kind warm fruit compote. He also grabs a skin of water. He wants to hurry over to the dwarves to get his weapon. He hopes it's ready so he can do the training with the others.
To his great relief, when he shows up at the forge, Brother Gelor has the Serpent's Tongue ready for him. He is speechless at the shining metal of the chain links, the darker metal of the 2 spiked chains, the clearly well-worked hardwood shaft. Though clearly of strong workmanship, the weapon is simple, without carving or ornamentation and Aelar finds he prefers it that way. Thanking the dwarves, and especially Brother Gelnor profusely, he heads back out to the inn just in time to go with them to Sir Geoffrey's. When he left the dwarves, he put the Serpent's Tongue in a bag to hide it from inquiring eyes, so none of his friends sees it right away.
As he'd expected, based on the time spent in the dream-vision, there is first warming up exercises, stretches and the like. When it is time to begin the weapons training, Aelar opens the bag and removes the brand new two-headed flail. "This is a Serpent's Tongue. The dwarves made it for me. They have one but it's an heirloom and they refused to even let me train with it. So Brother Gelnor convinced them to make me a new one. What do you think?"
He then launches into a series of basic exercises with the weapon, quickly demonstrating considerable proficiency with the exotic weapon. However, he soon puts it up in favor a simple spear. "I'm already skilled with that, from the dream-vision. I just wanted to get a feel for its balance and weight since each weapon is different. This is a chance to learn something new, and I don't want to waste that chance."

((The serpent's tongue flail can be wielded two ways, but it does 1D6 mixed blunt/piercing damage either way; two-handed, with the lead hand gripping both chains at the 'choke point' it can deliver quick strikes at a close 5 foot melee range and counts as a finesse weapon. When holding the handle alone in one hand, however, the long chains extend its reach to 10 feet, making it strike more like a whip and solely reliant on STR instead, so it's definitely a unique weapon as it's kind of the inverse of the usual versatile rule.
If an enemy gets inside the 10 foot range, Aelar will either have to switch to the 2-handed finesse short-range style or use some movement and back up before attacking again from range.
And of course, as stated before. on a natural roll of 18-20, an opponent without an exotic weapon proficiency must make a perception save against your attack roll or become surprised and take disadvantage for all attacks after on that turn. This can only happen once a battle.))

As Kallista arrives to the store, Grimbuld looks surprised at her.
"You know, I wouldn't have blamed you if you had missed work this morning." he says, looking at the way the rain beats against the storefront windows.
"I hardly think we're going to get any customers until the weather lets up." he says, and then heads to the back room.
Grimbuld is entirely dry... it's very likely that he lives in the upper floor of the building. He returns holding a ragged looking towel.
"Here, dry yourself off. You look half-drowned." he says.
"Well, let's put the quiet time to good use. Come along, I'll show you how to prepare some medicinal tea leaves today. I have a feeling we're going to have some runny noses and wheezing coughs come through our door in a couple of days from the poor bastards who have to work out in that mess."

ooc: So it does less damage than a regular flail but it can allow the wielder to attack from outside standard melee range, and will once per battle (per enemy?) sometimes give an enemy disadvantage on its next attack that turn, if it hasn't already attacked that turn? And 2-handed it's a DEX weapon and 1-handed its a STR weapon?

((Just reminding that Hyre walked with Kallista to her workplace to meet Grimbuld. Should I treat it as if he just didn't notice Hyre? I doubt that's the case, considering how perceptive you described him, and with the rain I can't reason that Hyre entered a bit after Kallista either because he'll have no reason to stay outside.))

((Yep, that's right. Two-handed, the user can shorten the chain by holding it by the choke point, allowing for fast, finessed strikes, but using the chain at full length makes it a STR weapon to be used with one hand since the chain would be quite heavy and require great swinging movements to gain momentum for the strikes, like a seriously weighted whip.))

Kallista nods and follows him, but does say. "Um, Sir. I know we wouldnt be able to do it today... but do you think it would be possible to show me how to use a real bow? Please," she adds quickly, "I... I'd really like too."

((I was waiting for Kallista to introduce Hyre and Barna, so yes, we'll go with that, with them entering after Kallista.))
Grimbuld raises a brow to Kallista, looking surprised and inquisitive.
"Now there's a surprise. For what reason?" he asks, slowly turning to face her and peering at her to ascertain her reasons.
"You don't seem the type to want to rush back out into danger again. Did something happen? Are you in some sort of trouble, Kallista?" he asks, before he hears the bone chime over the door sound the arrival of company.
Grimbuld looks curiously over to see Hyre and Barna enter.
"Hmmm." he grumbles, eyeing the two.
"Something tells me Sister Daar doesn't need more healing salves. All right, out with it.... what's this all about?" he asks gruffly, folding his arms.

"I'm not in trouble Sir," Kallista says, starting to explain. "When we escaped Hon... a dragon named Raia helped us. I guess Aeler can mentally comunicate with her, and she's doing her best to recover but now she's starving and can't defend herself. Aeler wants to go help her, but we can't let him go alone... and none of us know how to fight really well. I'm not looking to be an expert overnight Sir... I just want to be able to use one without having to rely on magic."
She looks to Hyre and Barna and takes a deep breath before continuing. "I know you're still recovering Sir, but we could use your help getting there too. We don't know anything about travelling through the woods. And... Sir Geoffrey..." she winces, hoping she didnt just ruin everything, "said that you were the only person who could get us all there and back safely."

ooc: I forgot about seeing Grimbuld so I'd like to modify my post. If possible, I'd like to modify my post as below.
Aelar is up early, slipping out of the room he shared with Leon. He grabs a hearty breakfast of eggs, some bread smeared with honey and a kind warm fruit compote. He also grabs a skin of water. When he left the dwarves, he put the Serpent's Tongue in a bag to hide it from inquiring eyes, so none of his friends sees it right away. However, he hasn't gone even halfway when he remembers he needs to speak with Grimbuld...he shouldn't just leave that to Kallista. Turning, he heads in that direction and is just in time to see Hyre and Barna go in. Taking a deep breath, he goes in behind them.
"Good morning, you two. Sorry I'm late. I had to see the dwarves to get that thing made for me," he says, patting the bag gently.
He listens as Kallista finishes then steps forward and bows slightly in respect. "I don't think we've met, Mr. Grimbuld. My name is Aelar Galanodel. I'm the one Raia is speaking with. I know roughly where she is, I can tell you what she's told me and she's only about a day away."
After the meeting with Grimbuld, Aelar hurries over to Sir Geoffrey to get some training time in. As he'd expected, based on the time spent in the dream-vision, there is first warming up exercises, stretches and the like. When it is time to begin the weapons training, Aelar opens the bag and removes the brand new two-headed flail. "This is a Serpent's Tongue. The dwarves made it for me. Hyre is surprised when Barna shows up at the saloon. He's a bit awkward with her, not sure what to think of how suddenly she left last night, but happy to see she came back. He was planning to ask Kallista for advice - being a girl and all - but when Barna joins, he decides to wait for another chance.
Hyre releases Barna's hand which he's been holding while walking and steps closer, next to Kallista. "Hello, sir. My name is Hyre. A pleasure to meet you. I'm sorry to interrupt you two, but I assume training with the bow will take time. I came here because I was told you're the best person to get advice from about how to raise..." He takes the pouch out from underneath his clothes where he hoped it would remain dry. He carefully takes out the no longer petrified egg and holds it so Grimbuld can see. "... the animal that is expected to hatch from this egg. It was completely stone until yesterday but I guess it should hatch soon."
Varielky
Grimbuld looks between the new arrivals, eyes flicking back and forth. He clenches his jaw a few times, then lets out a long sigh, arms tensing over his chest.
"Hmmm." he grumbles, glancing at Kallista again.
"So that explains your willingness to venture into the wilds. Desperation." he says, then nods shallowly.
"But, the willingness to do whatever it takes to survive is a necessary trait to have in the wilds. I'm not upset that you brought this to me, Kallista, I want you to know that. I respect your drive and determination." he states.
He walks a bit, pacing the store in silence as the rain beats down on the windows, glancing at the egg Hyre presents.
"Hmph. So that sonnfa***** is still alive..." he says, taking a closer look at the egg.
"A bullet hawk egg... that's quite a find." he comments, unable to hide his interest. "It's been decades since I've seen an egg up close. I'm not going to ask how you came upon it, but since you haven't sold it off, you must be serious about raising it." he leans closer.
"And it's peaking.... you have a few days at most before it shells"
He looks to Kallista, then Hyre, then Aelar, and finally Barna, all youths looking to him for help, all survivors of a tragic fate. He strokes his chin.
((Grimbuld's disposition))

Grimbuld sets his jaw, and then once again folds his arms.
"I suppose you don't have the money to pay me properly as a guide." he says.
"Not that I'm so unscrupulous to take money from children, but I have nothing to gain by helping you, either, especially if I'm to keep you all out of trouble. I propose a trade." he states.
"Kallista has proven herself to be a reliable assistant, if the rest of you are even half as competent as she is, you can prove useful to me out in the wilderness. It won't be without risk, but Geoff and I should be sufficient to protect you. I want some billhook crane feathers. They fetch a high price and if we have help, they should be easy enough to trap and harvest without much trouble. The meat is also a delicacy. Smoked, it can be sold as a cure for joint aches and other maladies because of its high nutritional value. They're not as dangerous as trolls, obviously, but they could still hurt you pretty badly if you're not careful." he states.
"Those are my terms. Help me harvest 3 or 4 billhooks, I'll agree to guide you, teach you how to shoot, and I'll even throw in some of my old equipment for rearing that bullet hawk."
((I'm running on very little sleep so if I forgot to address something, give me a poke, I'm a little hazy.))
DM, professional illustrator and comic artist, suffering from severe spinal stenosis, married, middle aged, and nerdy.
"I am serious about it. Maybe it's because of the way I acquired it," he briefly glances over to Barna and Aelar, "but the thought of selling it didn't really cross my mind, even though we were in great need of money. Although, at the time, I didn't know it was more than a hard rock either."
Hyre considers Grimbuld's offer. Yesterday, he opposed the idea of going out of the walls fiercely. Today, this presumably smaller risk can help them decrease the risk of dying when they leave for Raia. If he hadn't already accepted going out the other day, he'd probably oppose this too. The reward seemed very good, however, getting both a guide, training for Kallista and equipment for himself. He's still conflicted because he doesn't want any of them to get hurt, but what tips the scales, in the end, is the fact Kallista just mentioned both Hon and Raia. She trusts him a lot. 'Worst case scenario,' he thinks, 'I'll just take a hit for one of them. They're all inexpendable for the expedition we're about to take. I'm probably just going to be extra weight anyway.'
Hyre nods to the others to show that he's fine with the deal but doesn't say anything. He's waiting for someone else to respond, or maybe one of the others will have an objection.
(Edit: Auto correct changed so much of this post and I only noticed it now...)
Varielky
Aelar nods eagerly. "It's a deal, Mr. Grimbuld." His childlike eagerness overriding the training he'd received from his mother and cousin. He then proceeds to tell the ranger, for he could be nothing else, what he knows of Raia's location, her description and that it's about a day away.
"Where can we get the food and especially water she needs, Mr. Grimbuld. And we'll need backpacks, right? She says human food will do fine, so I'm guessing there's no need to drag goats or cows with us." He says with a grin.
Tandor the White, Human Life Cleric
Grimbuld turns to face his company.
"No rations besides water. Carrying city-prepared food in the wilds is like waving a flag about for every predator downwind of us. We hunt what we eat, we eat all we hunt and keep moving. As for this 'dragon' friend of yours, we'll find something for her too. If you all manage to prove yourselves competent, we may be able to net ourselves--all of us--a tidy profit if we can harvest six or seven billhooks. That will be more than enough to stave off starvation, and properly prepared, it is possible to disguise the smell of food, if you know the right herbs to use." he states.
He advances on the kids.
"Understand this: I can only protect you if you do exactly as I say. No faffing about. We travel when I say, where I say, how I say. Disobey me, and I have no problems turning around and leaving you to fend for yourselves." he states firmly.
He looks then to Hyre's egg, and inspects it more closely.
"I'll get the supplies for you now, then we can go meet with Geoffrey. I suppose it's foolish to hold onto such and old grudge... and it's useless to keep my shop open in this weather." he states, looking to Kallista.
"We'll consider this on-the-job training, I suppose."
Grimbuld goes up to the second floor and the creaking of a cellar door can be heard as he goes up into his home, reappearing later with a cage, a falconer's hood, heavy gloves, and a primitive syringe made out of a hollowed out horn, handing them over to Hyre, the various objects all packed into the cage for ease of carrying. There's also a treated leather curtain for the cage that will keep the rain out as he carries it.
"Come on, then, let's go see the old bastard."
DM, professional illustrator and comic artist, suffering from severe spinal stenosis, married, middle aged, and nerdy.
Hyre looks curiously at the items in the cage but doesn't ask about them. When he gets to train the hawk, someone will probably explain how to use them already. "Thanks," is all he says. He didn't have a problem with obeying others in general but the way Grimbuld phrased it made him slightly suspicious. What is he planning to ask of them? He keeps his thoughts to himself, however.
When they're at Geoffrey's house, Hyre decides to train himself a different way than wielding weapons. He won't master it in a day and if a situation comes where he must use a weapon, it's probably too late anyhow. Instead, he chooses to read about the wilderness and bestiary. Avoiding danger or knowing exactly how to deal with it seemed like a better idea. The same way Grimbuld knew not to bring food from the city. He needed to learn these stuff for when the adults are not able to come with them. The others seemed capable enough fighting.
(Not sure if Lazlo's performance applies since they probably got there later, so I'll roll the advantage's second roll in separate so you can ignore it if it's not relevant.)

((Given that Lazlo would have only performed once everyone was at Geoffrey's, the advantage applies))
((So that is 2/3 successes to survival now for you Hyre, and 2/3 for INT. Also, because you chose to train your mind, you now have 30/50 class points towards wizard, but also 10 points towards druid AND ranger for his chosen studies. Druid might be a good fit for him considering he may have himself a loyal animal companion very soon.))
((Lazlo also gets 10/50 points towards fighter for his training, Aelar also got 10 points towards rogue for all the sneaking around he did at the library, and Leon just needs 10 more points for fighter. If Kallista chooses to train in archery, she'll earn 10 more points to ranger and fighter.))
Leon similarly, when he goes to work in the morning, finds that Duncan doesn't need him that day; because of the foul weather, the forge can't get going hot enough, so the only thing he can do is sharpen the weapons already made, and he doesn't need an assistant for that, so he's able to train with the group as well.
Grimbuld wears a simple hood and cloak on the way to Geoffrey's place, rather than his usual arachnine attire. At first, their reunion is tense, but given the amount of time that's passed and their mutual grieving for the loss of Diana, they maintain a civil, if not slightly distant, company with each other. They agree, at least, to train the kids properly. Geoffrey seems surprised when Grimbuld reveals that the group will be working for him while they're in the wilderness, but Grimbuld assures him that the risk is not great.
"Unless they're absolutely useless, the worst that they'll get is some scars from the experience, and they'll at least learn something." Grimbuld comments.
While Geoffrey drills strength and coordination, Grimbuld teaches archery and basic wilderness survival. He introduces Hyre to his equipment, plus the foundations of earning a bird's trust and loyalty. He shows Hyre the proper way to feed the hatchling, mashing up meat and placing it in the horn, then blowing it gently into the bird's mouth through the thin end. He also reveals that Hyre is going to be going without much sleep for the first two weeks, needing to feed the bird every three hours or so.
Grimbuld is strict and blunt, but he shows respect for Hyre's keen interest in learning. Barna too, chooses to learn with Hyre, continuing her reading, though she begins to absorb herself more in the religious texts in Geoffrey's collection.
DM, professional illustrator and comic artist, suffering from severe spinal stenosis, married, middle aged, and nerdy.
While Lazlo trained, he couldn't stop thinking about the relationship between Sir Geoffrey and Hana. A traveling salesmen once came to Hon selling wooden puzzle cubes. Four sides were each decorated with the seasons of the planet, along with one side dedicated to the afterlife and one for the land of the dead. The cube would be scrambled- the images shifted as you twisted and turned it, and the goal was to manipulate it to get each scene back into its proper place. As hard as he tried (after accidently pocketing one), Lazlo couldn't figure out how to get the cube back together. He imagined the relationship among these elderly townsfolk as a puzzle- one he couldn't hope to put back together. If it DID fit together- well that would be really great, in his mind. He thought about Sir Geoffrey, the lonely Knight. Obviously, he and Hana were a perfect fit- both having lost someone dear to them. They should hook up! His mind raced with the possibiities... Should he ask for help? Maybe? His spirits rose with the thought of a happy ending for the pair. Distracted by his thoughts, he leaves an opening for Leon to sweep his feet out from under him with his practice sword. He should probably concentrate on what he was doing!

(Based on this, Hyre should now have full proficiency in Survival. Either way, while I did consider Druid or Ranger for a while when I learnt what the egg contains, both (especially Druid, since it seems we'll already have a Ranger and I don't like to duplicate others) require good Wis which... Hyre doesn't seem to be getting any time soon. Still an option though, I'm open-minded. There are ~5 classes I can see Hyre turn into and that will make sense with the story.)
Hyre takes Grimbuld's words and makes sure he'll be able to remember them well when he wakes up in the middle of the night, as Grimbuld told him it'll happen. He now realises that they have to get to Raia and back before the egg hatches. If it hatches on the way, it'll only be another thing to worry about.
When he's done learning all that he can, Hyre prepares to leave. "I promised to help Hana today," he explains, "maybe I could get some rest if I get there early. She said it'll be the busiest hours so I'll have to be fully awake. If I burn another meal like last time, I doubt even her kindness will allow Hana to let me stay in the kitchen." He takes all his stuff and fits them into the cage. Then, he covers it with the leather curtain to protect against the rain. Hyre departs and walks over to the Horseshoe.
Varielky
Before Hyre leaves, Aelar takes a moment to pull him aside. "Listen, my friend. I know you think this is a bad idea, and I respect that. Thank you for coming, though. I appreciate it."
Afterward, he says "I need to head over to farm and explain why I wasn't there this morning. It's only right," he finishes a little defensively.
When he gets to the farm, he seeks out his employers ((sorry...couldn't remember the names)). "I'm sorry I wasn't here this morning. Something important came up and I will be away for two, maybe three days. But after that, I'd really like to come back to work. Would that be OK?"
