The party becomes aware of the sound of chewing. Nobody in the party can yet see what's making the noise, but they're aware that they're not alone in the woods. Whatever it is, it sounds pretty big and there's an unmistakable sound of crunching bone. Kina attempts to quiet the clatter of her cargo before whatever it is notices... 20
The chewing continues. Whatever is feasting, it must be too focused on its meal.
Aelar moves to place himself on the side of the group where the sounds come from. He doesn't ignore the rest of the woods but does keep a careful eye, ear, nose and everything else on that side of things, particularly the trees, and the other sounds of the forest. When large predators are about, especially when prowling, he'd read that the other animals will go silent.
Aelar notices quite quickly that he hears none of the usual forest noises around him, save for the distant calls of scavenging birds waiting for their turn. Grimbuld draws his bow and listens carefully, then motions with his head towards a clutch of tree cover that the group could use to get a better look at what they're dealing with, whether it would even be a good idea to engage the creature at all. If it was preoccupied with its meal, it may not bother the group... then again, if it was particularly hungry, it could very well end up stalking the party, following the scent of a much more substantial meal.

((Gimmie a sec, I'm drawing up some art for the campaign, since the creature is homebrew.))
((Also, Berker and Erich, if you're not sure what to look for to make a plan, you can just roll an investigation check with an applicable skill to see if the characters have anything specific they could use for a plan, or at least I can list off options that the characters happen to spot or even craft in time to make an attempt before the sun goes down.))

The creature is visible from the group's new vantage point, and feasting upon the corpse is a roughly 9 feet long and about five feet tall animal, with a long, whip-like tail. Its forelimbs seem poorly suited to walking. While it doesn't have any true teeth, the bone of its skull protrudes out and forms jagged cutting surfaces, and a prehensile tongue covered in fleshy spines guides food in to be swallowed. A large, semi-exposed hole can be seen nearby where fresh drag marks suggest that the creature lunged out of it to catch its meal, a human dressed poorly for a hunter. He had only the most basic, crude hide armor for protection. More likely a scavenger, out hunting for unfortunate victims of wildlife to loot from. He was armed only with a simple spear, grossly inadaquate against the beasts that prowl the countryside.
The creature has devoured about half of him, though his upper body is mostly intact. He likely bled to death far before the creature began eating him. So far, the creature hasn't noticed the party yet. There are 2 other simple wooden spears laying nearby and there's fresh tracks leading away from the scene that are obvious enough to not need a perception check.

Erich and Berker see that while the outpost is pretty tapped out of conventional weapons, they do have plenty of oil from the marine animals processed there. The strong smell coming from the oil suggests it could be flammable. If the creatures can be broken by blunt force trauma, perhaps they could also be burnt to a crisp, though there's always the possibility of losing control of a fire, it might not be a huge concern if they're able to find the right cave system and simply firebomb it. The creatures already don't like light, too. The main reason the guards at the outpost haven't used fire was due to the creatures' tendency to continue attacking, making setting fire to their own walls too great a risk.
Alternatively, the cannon could be unmounted from its stand and set up someplace else. While they don't have much gunpowder left, they could make the most of the shots they have by loading in alternative ammunition like chains that would rip bodies apart rather than simply blow through them.
Looking further at the processing area of the outpost, there are a number of huge blades that are normally used for sawing through tough carcasses that could be used in some kind of trap. The creatures will mindlessly march forward towards targets, they would probably just wander into something as simple as a deadfall, anything that wouldn't be perceived as an obstacle between them and their victim. There's also no shortage of ropes and pulleys around, as they're used to reposition the larger animals to be butchered.
Aelar cocks his head, burning the image of the creature in his mind. Then he tries to send the image to Raia. Any ideas on what that is? And what we should do about it?
Looking at Kallista and Mr. Grimbuld, the warlock points at the creature, then himself, then shrugs. Then he points at them and raises his eyebrows with a quizzical expression.
