Looking for a single player or small group to test a homebrew I'm developing. I'm a new DM, so feedback of all kinds is appreciated. The homebrew is a semi-modern world with arcano-tech (if you've seen Dimension 20's Fantasy High, similar vibe as far as a diverse world with crystals for communication, but more limited tech around transportation). Hoping to run 1st level characters through some rp exploration and a few encounters.
Anan was found by in a clearing, in the middle of the woods by a community of monks who shunned technology. They learned how to fight with their fists and lived by hunting and gathering. Their various arts was legendary yet they were barely sold. Anan learned how to fight and how to paint. Anan made legendary paintings yet he couldn't share them with the world. All of the other monks praised his arts yet forbade him from leaving and accepting technology.
"They will force you to use it!" cried his friend.
"They will charm you into using technology!" cried another friend.
Yet, he wanted the world to appreciate his artwork and so, he left. Anan escaped. A bittersweet victory. Now his family and friends are searching for him and he is on the run. He is also in the middle of painting his greatest piece yet, The Grasping Gem.
Assuming small group as opposed to the single player; I hold some interest~ So, would be a short runned pbp in your setting? I could be game for some short run exploration and combat~What aspect of your homebrew are you tryign to test though? LIke new magitech basically?
I could be into trying it out. Either a level 1 Artificer or Warlock. Since honestly level 1 characters tend to feel pretty similiar anyway. but those are classes I like.
This sounds like fun! I'm definitely interested. I would like to know more about the setting prior to making a character as well. I've been toying with the idea of making a Wizard, if that's possible, but I'm entirely flexible.
I have some experience in the table-top and virtual setting (FG), but this would be my first foray into PBP.
Thanks for the interest everyone! To answer the various questions I've gotten.
1. The main thing I'm trying to test is finding cracks in the world, if that makes sense. It's my first homebrew, and no matter how much advice you listen to, you'll always overlook some things. Especially since I'm a new DM, I'm adjusting to being behind the screen and to improvising within something that I created at the same time. In trying to stay the line between over-prepping and under-prepping, I'm hoping internet strangers will be easier to try this out for the first time, where I might get more self-conscious and flustered with friends.
2. I'm open to any races and classes at this point as long as you steer clear of truly deeply evil. I'm not restricting people to being saints and martyrs, I'm just not looking to DM a group that will set the orphanage on fire for this game. That said, ThalaiDawncaller... I'd want to chat with you briefly before I let you play an Aarakocra. I think we can make it work, but it's the only race I have any second thoughts about at this point.
3. Since this is kind of a play-test scenario rather than me trying to set up a super long term campaign, I'm open to people exploring and interacting with the world in ways that might kinda break it. Please don't specifically try to break it, lol. But if the foundation isn't solid then a shorter play through should help reveal that.
4. I'm also new to PbP, so I'll be patient with anyone else learning this system, cuz I am too!
Details on the world: Long ago there was a decade of hard rain, and the sea level rose. Many ships that were traveling across the sea lost their bearing, unable to guide themselves by their normal means of charting off the sun and the stars due to cloud cover that stretched across the entire sky. Ships that landed on the coast mostly chose not to risk getting lost again on the way home. Lost sailors from many different lands instead decided to settle here and make a home. They enjoyed the mild (if often overcast) weather, and resources were plentiful. They called area Tall Sea after the way the sound and the lakes would spill over and flood during the years of hard rain. Toward the end of the decade of rain there was a landslide at the mouth of the sound that mostly closed the sound into an inland sea.
Various races from across the world have settled here in Tall Sea, and many formed small towns and villages within their own communities. In the early days this served as a form of safety, since many were unfamiliar or distrusting of other races from other parts of the world. Many generations later have it is more of a metropolitan gathering of villages (think Little Italy being a half day's walk from Chinatown. It's not segregated, but definitely flavored by who settled each village and town originally). Since there was no competition for resources, and same-race communities were limited to the size of a ship or two, friendly relations developed between the races and most old malices melted away as generations were raised far away from where their ancestors formed them.
A relatively mild climate here means most travel is by foot, or horse. Safety and collaboration have allowed for some more advance tech and arcanotech to develop, including crystals that allow for communication (think flip phone, texts and calls, but on a limited network. No internet). Your group has lived in the far Southern reaches of Tall Sea, and has never had reason to travel north to the most metropolitan area until now. You each have your own reasons for leaving home, but more than anything you're looking to discover the world beyond your hometown and you're ready to set out on adventure!
Backstory: Gil and her mate Nipperkin Brownbowl have been living in Tall Sea since birth, Nip is a dreyer for his father's brewery and Gil is an amateur entertainer. She has sought a more glamorous life for the better part of 3 years now and has started to have a falling out with me Nip. She is determined to get out of town and see the world and we'll go to great lengths to do so.

I could join, I'm a long time player and DM and I like helping make homebrew
I'm a big fan of bards and a music/chess club style character could be fun.
I'd love to join! I'd probably want to learn more about the world before creating a character, but I'm really intrigued!
I do both party and individual character commissions. PM me for info.
