At Mittens' question, Blueschist and Strewn exchange a glance, and Tuff answers carefully. "There are those who persistently take an interest in Mr. Strewn's undertakings and knowledge. That is why we engage in the deception of hiring soldiers clothed as footmen.
"There was some years ago an attempt to kidnap the master..." this statement elicits a response from Strewn as he reads, "Pshah."
"And," continues Bluechist, regarding Strewn sternly, "the Master's current mission on the Continent, if known to certain...Imperials...would attract considerable attention. In due time we will all know more. For the moment, if anyone--anyone--should ask, and focus on me as I say this: the Master is visiting the Continent to hear Kieu-Lan Trinh in her performances here in Ishi Ammah, and her tour of the Rainbow Coast."
Mittens asks, "This is probably pointless a question, but does Mr. Strewn have any enemies we should be on the lookout for?" He eyes Dolkum curiously, wondering how capable their new companion is.
He adds, "I also don't really have anything to do in the meantime, so would you mind if I just stay here for a few hours and read?"
(OOC: you'll only have an hour or so, but you can all move pretty freely in the Villa, except for the study, and Strewn's quarters underground, to which he retreats presently.)
Without anything serious to do, Ednyss bumps Varielky's shoulder and asks, "Would you like to spar? I could use the practice." If she agrees, Ednyss turns to the brothers to ask if there are any place in or around the house that they might be able to spar for practice.

Varielky shrugs. "Sure," she says, "I could do that. Don't blame me if you lose a finger or two though." She was actually planning to ask Ednyss about the symbol she saw but decides to wait. Maybe by worshipping Takal Demesh - fighting and judging Ednyss, that is - some divine inspiration will come to her. She also wanted to try out the new tactics she developed while fighting in the arena. Some of them were surely going to surprise Ednyss.
(OOC: Just so I can decide on how many resources I can spend on Varielky unloading her anger on someone (sorry Ednyss, it would have been her first foe. With everything that happened the last two days... she needs it), will they have time to take a short rest after the sparring?)

Master Mittens, I appreciate your candor. I assure you everything that happens is in accord with the will of Idiwala, including the 2 of us joining together. I promise to leave your bells alone as long as the only necks you romance are those of our enemies. :) jk
Sparring sounds like a great idea. I am willing, too, if any one else is?
Noticing that there are two others willing to spar, Ednyss starts, "I certainly don't mind. Although if Benita will join us, then we can spar in pairs. Otherwise we will have to rotate. Benita?" Regardless Ednyss, starts on his way towards the terrace lawn as he walks, he pulls out his War Pick and shakes his head at its balance still impressed with the craftsmanship of Ingrid and her friend in the Core.
If Dolkum doesn't mind sitting out the first fight and Benita has declined to join them, Ednyss starts out sparring Varielky. If Benita has joined them, Ednyss offers to partner up with Dolkum, saying, "Dwarves against humans. Should prove an interesting fight." Whether he is sparring alone or with Dolkum, Ednyss gives a wry grin as he lowers himself into a ready stance.
(OOC: Not sure what we would roll to emulate sparring without actually hurting each other... Also depends on whether Benita joins us...)

“The mark of a successful DM is when you have caused more player deaths with doors than dragons, demons, or devils.”
Mittens follows the group out onto the lawn area and picks a spot to plop down. He pulls open his spellbook and sets it on his lap as he reads over the words he's read a million times already. He despairs slightly at the meager contents of his book. Only seven spells were etched across seven pages. He vows to himself that one day, his book will be full even if it is then last thing he does.
He begins daydreaming a bit about his future when he remembers the boots he was given. He pulls them out of his bag and tries them on (attuning). He wiggled his toes a bit, feeling now well the shoes fit before turning his attention to the sparring ahead of him. Pooky hops up into his lap, and Mittens rubs him as he says absentmindedly, "Do you think I'll ever be a great wizard, Pooky?"
"First to land three hits wins? Or - if we're going for a pair fight - two hits and you count as down? No need to get too serious, especially if none of us has a dummy weapon or a stick to use instead. I'd suggest no weapons but my hand still hurts from the other day." Then, both to Benita to echo Ednyss' question and to all to get a response to her suggestion: "What do you say?" She walks over to the lawn with the others and takes her shield off her back, holding it in her left hand, but her right-hand takes her longsword still in its sheath. "It might be a bit unbalanced but at least I won't take your head off. It'll still hurt though."
Mittens responds, "No thanks. I'd rather watch. If I ever have to use a weapon, it's already too late to do anything useful." He watches the sparring from a distance and thinks of what spells he wants in the future.
He begins daydreaming a bit about his future when he remembers the boots he was given. He pulls them out of his bag and tries them on (attuning).
(OOC: Mittens will also have to "try out" the boots for those 2 hours to be able to fully control them during a melee. If he spends the next hour leaping around the terrace, he'll have them half-way attuned. We'll say he can use them up to 1/2 effectiveness. But while he's learning how to use them, he could find himself accidentally landing in the middle of a sparring match. The terrace isn't that big. If you want to take your chances, just roll four DEX saves vs. DC10. If you fail any of them, you might find yourself in harm's way.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Mittens looks down at the boots he's wearing. Actually, I'm going to try these bad boys out!he thinks to himself. He stands and tries a few small jumps to warm up before taking off into large leaps.
It is a crisp, sunny afternoon in late winter as Dwarves face off against humans in a sparring match on the Terrace of Villa Safi Meknes. Ednyss and Dolkum stand side by side, and across the small lawn, beside a statue of the first Dwarven envoy to Orraca, Igneous Slag, stand Varielky and Benita.
20 Benita / 19 Dolkum / 17 Varielky / 9 Ednyss / 1 (Mittens will "flyby," accidentally becoming an obstacle during odd-numbered rounds after everyone goes.)
Within spoilers, everyone please post round 1 actions, including both Plan A and Plan B. Plan B is in case, for example, the object of your Plan A attack “dies” before your initiative order. Roll potential attacks and damage. Also just in case, if you have a reaction attack which might be triggered, go ahead and roll that attack and damage too and include it in a spoiler.
Benita, Round 1:
Benita’s quick eye takes in the milieu but she’s distracted and her heart isn’t in it. She is readying an action. If anyone attacks her, she will engage and attack back. Attack 15 Damage 10. If Varielky is within 5', she add Sneak Attack damage to the blow if it hits: 3)
Dolkum grins, steps forwards 2 squares to I5 and yells out HEY TALL FOLK! LET'S BUMP IT!
Dolkum learned some years ago to be patient with this sort of thing, to wit a dwarf charging in with a full head of steam was more likely to be tossed somewhere else.
Ednyss approaches the nearest target. Assuming Varielky doesn't move, that's her... And Ednyss moves to G7 to engage her without engaging Benita. If Varielky or Benita has already moved closer to engage, then Ednyss attempts to position himself so that he is in melee range of only Varielky, but he will move to be in range of both if necessary. From there, he swings his new War Pick in a feint towards Varielky before spinning it in his hands and slamming her with the blunt end of the pick (Attack: 13 Damage: 7). After swinging he turns and calls to his partner, "Stop standing there and start sparring! This is sparring practice not taunting practice!"

Plan A: Varielky wants to test Ednyss but chooses to test the new one first. She runs towards him (since he goes first I won't specify a location, just within 5 ft. of him, if possible also in the range of Ednyss so she can easily reach him once she's done with the other dwarf) and swings her sword at him. Then, she tried to surprise him with a shield bash to knock him prone. Attack: 18 Damage: 12 Athletics for Bash: 16
Plan B: If by the time she reaches the dwarves Benita took Dolkum down, she'll attack Ednyss instead. Already knowing he is a good warrior, Varielky immediately tries one of her new tactics against him. She tries to disarm him of his weapon (Disarming Attack battle manoeuvre) and then push him away from it and kick it away so he can't reach it. Attack: 12 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll., on a hit: Ednyss has to make a DC 13 STR Saving Throw or drop is weapon. Shove Ednyss away with Athletics: 19 If she manages to make Ednyss drop his weapon, she'll use her free action to kick the war pick away.
For both plans: If someone attacks her and misses Varielky dodges and uses their recovery time to land one more attack. Using the Riposte battle manoeuvre. Attack: 6 Damage: 14
