As you pondered what to do after being rebuffed, you noticed a group of three humans whispering among themselves. They occasionally looked and pointed in your general direction before rising and leaving the bar without a word.
Let me know what you would like to do next... Continue asking the patrons for Yargin? Something else? "End" your week?
Radgar:
Thanks you're all set for this week! More to come soon!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Fargrim looks at the people leaving the bar and back to the Barkeep. "You'd better hope they're going to get help for you. I'm going to find out what I need to know from you before they get back though." Fargrim swings the hammer to smash the barkeeps hands in the glass he's polishing.
Scene 4: Feeling the edge, Kaisaras slowly began to recognize that his father wasn't in the best mood. Grounding himself, he looked back at his father before speaking up, "As you know, I have been pursuing leads onto your case, so to clear your name. I had received words from a contact about a potential lead that paid off. Gaedren Lamm, the one responsible for your framing and murder of the fisherman (among other things), was at an abandoned warehouse for a short time, so I went in to detain and prevent his escape. He perished, but I managed to collect enough evidence to bring it back to the guards. As for my slow return, I was underground at the time of the King's passing, and upon hearing of it, saw fit to do what I could to curb the chaos within the city....part of that, drew the attention of the Queen, who thanked me for service to the city." He'd then hold out the chest he'd been granted by the Queen herself, now holding only his share of the gold.
Whack! A direct hit on the bartender's hands. He's not going to be able to properly use those for a long while. Recoiling in shock and pain, the man man cried out as he stumbled to the ground behind the bar. Though the bar wasn't particularly "vibrant" beforehand, it was dead silent now and you could feel the eyes of the remaining patrons staring at you with interest. "What did you do to my hands!?!?!" he cried out in pain as he held his mangled hands close to his body. "I'll get you back for this!! I swear it on all the bloody Gods!!" In his shock and pain, he seemingly did hear or remember your original question.
Kaisaras:
Lucian gave Kaisaras another measured after hearing his son's story; letting the silence linger for an almost awkward amount of time. Eventually stepping forward, he sighed as he grabbed the chest and placed it on a nearby surface. "I thought I told you to ignore those baseless allegations Kai. Trying to fight them just gives them undo credence." Pausing for a moment as he seemed to soften slightly, he added, "That being said, I guess I'm not too hard of a man to say well done; you've clearly been busy. Though Kaisaras, you need to be more careful! You could've been killed! And you cannot just go out enacting vigilante justice whenever you please; we're Ironwards, not Blackjack. Besides..." a faint smile spreading across his face as he placed a hand on his son's shoulder, "... you say you want to be more involved with the Brigade, but that would actually require you to be around when needed! Luckily your sister was here in your stead this time around. Now come, we have much to do if the city is going to right itself and recover..."
Blackjack is arguably one of the most famous entities within Korvosa. To some, an avenging angel, to other the true protector of the Korvosan people, and to a few who draw their ire - the corrupt politicians, cruel nobles, and greedy merchants of the city - the bane of their existence. Since the city's founding over 200 years ago, whenever there was a person in need of saving or justice to be served, Blackjack is always reputed by the populace to have been involved in some fashion. If only there was any proof that they actually existed!
Kurstin:
You're all set for the week thanks!!
As a note, based on your rolls, catching up on your schoolwork has been a bit of a challenge your first week; you've missed a lot of lectures/ practicums lately!!!
To the bar Fargrim said, ”Alright everyone, back to your drinks. I don’t want to hear any of you get up or you’ll be asking the missus to help you wipe your arse like this guy here.”
To the barkeep, “Now, as for you, I’m going to ask you again to tell me where I can find Yargin and if you don’t tell me, I’m going to hurt you a lot more. So, what’ll it be?”
Scene 4: Kaisaras let his head drop, nodding at his father's words. He did wish to be here, to help...and thanks to his little venture, he had a few ideas on how to do it. Smiling at hearing how his sister was taking some action, Kai chuckled and raised his head, "Good to hear that Arcadia is finding herself." He'd then follow after his father, his various ideas and new perspectives ready to help shape the family.
The first action he'd take to is recommending the gathering of alchemists and doctors for a type of guild, both to create a supply for the Steel Brigade, but also to share with the guard. Secondly, he'd inquire on behalf of Field Marshal Cressida Kroft, working with the guard to both increases the Brigade's numbers, and collaborate to bring the city back to order. Finally, he'd push to gather the collaboration of the more minor families in both endeavors, force them to fulfill their responsibilities as nobility.
Danse: a copy of yours in case you missed it on the previous page:)
You're mostly set for week 1. Your performances were quire successful and you've earned 5 Gold, 7 Silver & 5 Copper for the week! It seems you've started to make a name for yourself!
If you're staying in taverns/ inns for the week, it'll be:
Cheap: 1 Silver per night
Decent: 5 Silver per night
"Nice": 2 Gold per night
Let me know if you're interested in finding a more permanent home for Danse over the Downtime period and we can work that out in the upcoming weeks
Fargrim:
Make (2) Intimidation checks for me (the second one with advantage)
Kaisaras:
Roll me (2) Persuasion rolls and then you should be all set for this first week! (More to come)
Danse concluded the week with his regular, plastic smile - and a few more coins to weigh down his pockets when running around the streets in pursuit of a place to set up shop. Electing to walk the middle ground between luxury and poverty, he finds a mediocre (Decent) tavern to find a relatively safe bed to sleep in.
Next week, he renews his performances - this time leaning more on the magical side of affairs as he blends mundane magical tricks with subtle illusions. Rather than his initial approach of wandering around the streets in hope of finding someone related to Yargin, he sets up his performances in an identical location each week in an attempt to draw someone of that line of work towards him rather than the other way around.
(Would I need another Performance check? The gold has been added and marked off on my sheet for 1 week of Decent quarters.)
The patrons in the bar stared at you with a variety of looks but did nothing more, eventually returning to the drinks or leaving the bar shortly after.
"I have no idea who this bloody Yargin is!! I'd tell you if I did alright! Now just get out of here and leave me in peace you bastard!!" the bartender whimpered out, continuing to cradle his mangled hands. It was easy to see that the man had nothing to hide and would've told Fargrim whatever he knew if he knew it.
Eventually leaving the bar, Fargrim was intercepted by the three patrons, two men and a woman, who had left shortly after Fargrim had arrived. "You looking for Yargin? We might know where he is. Rumor has it a guy by that name has recently holed himself up tight somewhere in Bridgefort (ooc: in the Old Korvosa District). We were talking it over, and if you're willing to help us out with something, we'd be willing to tell you what we know. What do you say...?"
Kaisaras:
Thanks you're all set for the week!
Radgar:
You already rolled previously, but since you have no idea what the rolls are for, I'll let you decide which set to keep (evil DM smile XD)
Fargrim eyes the trio suspiciously, "Why don't you tell me what you need and then I'll let you know if I can help? I'm not looking to play games though. I just want to find this guy and get it over with."
So something I like to do in my games is create custom magic items for all of the PCs that are flavorful and unique to each individual character. Recently, in one of the games that I currently play it, the DM did something similar but with a twist: the players got to create their own magic items (with DM approval of course). I thought it was a really fun change of pace from I've seen/ done in the past so I've decided to steal borrow it and bring it into this game as well. I've copied the spiel they gave to us about the idea below:
One of the many things that I like about 5e is the independence from magic items with regards to power levels. The game is set up so PCs don’t need magic items to tackle challenging encounters. And although there are some number crunching involved in providing challenging encounters, it’s got a lot of art to it. The end result is that I don’t need to give every high-level guard a magic weapon to be a threat; the stats already take this into account. But I digress; back to magic items.
Although magic items are not needed, they are lots of fun and full of flavor for any campaign and this one is no exception. However, freed from the necessity of providing you with lots of magic items (the old Christmas tree conundrum), we can have magic items that are unique, have meaning, and add flavor to the story we are telling.
Throughout this campaign, you will be awarded two major (permanent) magic items (I will add other minor (expendable) items). The major items to be ‘gained’ will start out as ‘uncommon major items’ and will eventually be one ‘major legendary item’ and one ‘major very rare’ item. These items will grow as you grow in power so for example, ‘+1 longsword’ (a major uncommon item) may grow into a ‘holy avenger’ (a major legendary item).
Please refer to the tables linked on the Campaign Info tab (Xanathar's Magic Item Tables) to get an idea of the power level of these items. This is important because I want you to totally design these items. I expect the items to have a particular history and look/feel to them. I don’t want to hear ‘+1 longsword’; I want to an implacable blade, with its particular look and history behind it. You may add quirks to the items.
In summary, I’ll need two items (one from uncommon to legendary and one from uncommon to very rare) and their version as they scale up (i.e., +1 longsword to Sunblade to Sword of Sharpness to Holy Avenger). Feel free to customize and reskin everything with regards to the item; I’m only looking for a similar power level.
I should be able to place these items to be found as treasure in the campaign where it makes most sense. Beware that you may have to take the ‘super cool weapon’ from an enemy’s cold grasp.
There's no rush to have any of these items fully designed but I do plan on trying to drop at least one of the items for each of you before we hit the middle of Chapter 2 of the Campaign (which is still a bit of a ways off); so no hurry with this but the sooner the better so I can start thinking where these items are. Please PM me directly with your options so we surprise the other players with the items. BTW, I don’t need the full-fledged items right away so it’s OK to suggest an item for approval and then flesh out its details later. As a note, since we have a Forge Cleric and an Artificer, a very viable option is to have one of them make you something as well!!
Let me know if you have any questions and hope you all are enjoying the campaign so far!!
The first week back at University was more challenging than Kurstin had anticipated. He had really let his studies fall behind while searching for Irma. He was physically and emotionally drained after his adventure with The Harrowers - the death of Brock weighed more on his mind and heart than the gruesome deaths of all of the other thugs and bandits combined. His parents were practically sucking the life out of him, constantly wanting to know every detail of every little thing; worriedly waiting for his return from classes and his work; and, believe it or not, stuffing him with more food than he had eaten in the past month because he looked "peaky"...his mother's phrase for not being stuffed to the point of needing a bucket!
But all this he endured, because his research and practice at the 'Fishery were yielding some incredible results! His first amazing creation was to combine several runes for space, bubbles under water, and a concoction of tree sap and some cleaning fluids with a common over-the-shoulder bag, creating an unusually large holding space inside the bag without altering its outer proportions!
But his real pride came from the star-shaped, animated homunculus that not only had the ability to levitate and maneuver around him, but it even had a a small, working force cannon in it!! Truth be told, as he was perfecting the design Kurstin had several "fail fast" moments which likely led to some his parents' concerns and anguish. But how else do you make progress except to push the boundaries and find where they break? Besides...eyebrows grow back - right?
