Under raging storm clouds, a lone figure stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. The vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stares down a sheer cliff at the village below. A cold, bitter wind spins dead leaves about him, billowing his cape in the darkness.
Lightning splits the clouds overhead, casting stark white light across him. Strahd turns to the sky, revealing the angular muscles of his face and hands. He has a look of power — and of madness. His once handsome face is contorted by a tragedy darker than the night itself.
Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind’s howling increases as Strahd turns his gaze back to the village. Far below, yet not beyond his ken, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd’s face forms a twisted smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they have come — all according to his plan. He, the master of Ravenloft, will attend to them.
Another lightning flash rips through the darkness, its thunder echoing through the castle’s towers. But Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind — or perhaps a lone wolf — fills the midnight air. The master of Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited.
Overview
This is a Curse of Strahd PbP game. We are playing through an adjusted version of the Curse of Strahd adventure module - a WotC published adventure focusing on nonlinearity, exploration, atmosphere and a central, devious antagonist.
The game is already in motion, but we've come back to the recruitment pool to fill a couple newly vacant spots. You'll be creating a character at 5th level, to join our existing party:
Zenrian, the calculating Eladrin wild magic sorcerer who craves mastery over the magic of planar manipulation, so he can make his way home
Rhelms, the affable Triton Echo Knight, driven only by wanderlust and the sinking feeling that he never can go home again.
In-The-Dark-Alley, the serious Tabaxi Bloodhunter who has found no shortage of undead and evil creatures in the mists of Barovia to put down.
You are an ideal candidate for our game if:
You want to play a character trapped in a dark, terrifying cat and mouse game with a heinous predator.
You like a good backstory, character quirk and party dialogue better than high stats or min-maxed features.
You like to write. You like to write detailed and clever things and read other people's detailed and clever things.
How to Apply
PM me with the following:
Your discord username (this game will be played on Discord)
Your D&D Experience (beginners and veterans alike are welcome; we just like a heads up)
PbP availability (how regularly can you post/check in?)
A couple paragraphs of who your proposed character(s) is. Character sheet links not required
Your answer to the question: what was the most fun you've ever had playing D&D? (People who love similar parts of the game tend to make a happy group)
Once a cohesive group is put together, this LFG post will close and the game will resume on Discord.
Trigger/Content Warning
Curse of Strahd is a social interaction/role playing heavy DnD module, which deals thoroughly with themes of corruption, innocence and abuse. Mental illness, domestic and child abuse, and racism are established elements of the classic gothic horror fiction from which it draws inspiration, and are explored extensively throughout the module. Some of these issues are being edited or adjusted in our game in order to address the module's deficiencies. A lot of sensitive material remains.
If you have triggers and sensitivities but still want to play, please feel free to dialogue with the DM about where your boundaries are so I can look for how to craft a scary, horrifying and thrilling but not-traumatic experience for you as a player.
A brief (non exhaustive) trigger list:
child abuse, murder, kidnapping, gaslighting, racism, sexism, torture, mind control, cannibalism, sexual assault, mental illness, animal cruelty, body horror, incest, suicide, drug addiction, and alcoholism.
Module Adjustment Notes
Every DM changes their modules. Here are some of mine:
Edits have been made to the module to address shortcomings in the original, namely:
Harmful stereotyping of Romani peoples.
Normalization and overuse of violence against women and children.
Harmful language and depictions of interracial people.
If you're curious as to "why" some suggested reading, about CoS shortcomings that are informing our adaptation (warning - extensive spoilers abound)
