The cat-familiar slinks around the wall of the room, sniffing and pawing at items that catch its curiosity. Thirteen stays at the top of the rope, seemingly debating a way forward.
Seeing Lucius look around the room, Max squares his shoulders and takes a look at the north door to see if it is locked, and if not, he would open it ever so carefully.
Max checks the north door and, finding it unlocked, pushes it gently open...
An upside-down table sits in the middle of the room beyond, and books are scattered around it. Clinging to the bowed outer wall is an upside-down fireplace. Along that same wall is a window with nothing but hard-packed earth beyond it.
A door stands in the west wall to Max's left, another in the south wall. The door south is pushed ajar, a mass of earth and ice blocking the way through.
Not seeing anything of much use in the room, Max goes back to Carric and Virjor to say, "Not much there but another door, and it is blocked off. I am going to try this one." Max moves back into the original room and sees if the door to the east will open and if he can peek inside.
Whilst looking around the room Virjor hears Thirteen's joke, blanches in surprise and barks in laughter. "Well played Sir! You are deft with the word as well as the sword it would seem!"
Lucius hisses at the warforged from the safety of the other side of the room while Virjor pops his head in the room looking for magical evidence that may provide an answer as to why the room has an active Silent spell cast upon it.
Virjor does not see any obvious source of the silence; it may have been imbued into the walls as an enchantment to allow visitors to this room to be assured of peace during their studies.
Still no sign of the wizard that you seek, and the ways forward form here are the hole in the floor of the room with the cages, or the door east of that hole.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Hmm, the doors don't seem to be getting us anywhere" wonders Max aloud. "I think I'll take a look at the hole in the floor to see if that leads anywhere."
Max takes a look: Perception 21
If things seem good, he would gather up his rope to head down.
Max is able to poke his head down the hole into the room below. This chamber appears to have been a wizard’s laboratory, as evidenced by the upside-down storage cupboards and empty shelves fastened to the walls, the shattered glass and alchemical equipment strewn across the floor, and the arcane symbols painted on what is now the ceiling. In the middle of this space, opposite the hole through which Max observes, a five-foot-wide passageway is punched through the floor and leads to another level beyond. Near the hole, a partially collapsed wall exposes a room that lies beyond.
Seeing no sign of danger, Max ropes down and stands among the debris. Looking around him, the rogue sees a small brass key and a sealed scroll case made of a dark blue glass-like material.
Carric waits just for a brief moment and, when assured that Max is doing OK, he slips through the hole, tumbles agily to the floor below, and joins the halfling. As Max investigates what he's found, Carric stands guard, alert for any sudden sounds or movements.
Max smiles and does a "thumbs up" gesture to Carric in appreciation of the backup. He picks up the key, but before trying the nearby door, he shouts to Virjor and the others, "Coast looks clear down here! Also, I found a scroll case if you want to take a look, Virjor!"
Carric and Thirteen join Max down the hole to the third level. Nobody hears anything of note until Max shouts up to Virjor. Suddenly a scraping noise from the north room alerts you to movement, and as you prepare to defend yourselves, the door opens...
On the other side of the open door are two standing figures. One is an undead warrior in studded leather armor, its dead-gray flesh drawn tightly over its bones and its face locked in a terrible scowl. The other is an attractive young man in cold weather clothing. His face, beneath a frayed witch’s hat, displays studious eyes and a warm smile. “Welcome to the lost spire of Netheril,” he says. “My name is Dzaan.”
Max's eyes go wide with surprise, but hoping the scholar could be a potential ally, he extends his small hand and says, "Hiya! My name is Max Springfoot, and these are my friends, Carric and Thirteen. We help find lost things for people. We also have a wizard, who is really helping us on our current exploration of this upside-down spire. Ummm, did you lose this spell case? If so, I just found it for you!" Max grins.
Dzann looks pleased as Max makes his introductions.
"Well now, it's lovely to meet you! A wizard you say? Well then, there is something that you simply must see - follow me!"
He skips over the doorway and into your room. As he does, he gestures vaguely at his undead companion "Oh this is Krintass, he's with me but doesn't really speak"
Dzann prepares to hop down the hole to the next level, he notices the offered spell scroll: "Oh, not mine. Finders keepers I guess, enjoy!"
And with that, he drops down the hole to the floor below. Krintass follows him, more deliberate in his movement. As the undead creature moves past, you are almost certain that you hear a sigh.
After recovering from Thirteen's slap on his slender back Virjor excitedly follows Max's voice. "A spell scroll you say?! That is tremendous news, good fellow!"
He drops down to join the others in time to catch the end of Dzaan & Max's interaction, relieved the young halfling didn't hand over he scroll. He eyes the warrior Krintass and tries to subtly cast Mage Armor on himself, muttering the command and moving his hand behind his back to do so.
Sleight of Hand: 15
That done, he and Lucius follow the others down the hole.
Max gives a thumbs up to Virjor and then hands him the spell case. He then smiles at the thought of finding another room with more items in need of finding for their owners and follows Virjor down the hole.

(Ready to move on?)

Thirteen, stays at the entrance to the tunnel for a while, taking in his surroundings and wondering how such a vast building could end upside down.
Then, on hearing Max opening doors, without him there to try smash them down first, the warforged shimmies down the rope quickly to try and catch up.
He sees the door to the east. "Has no-one tried this one yet?" And checks for anything suspicious before opening.
Perception - 12
Thirteen and Max check the east door but hear nothing. Sure that it is safe, the large barbarian pushes the door open and steps inside.
This room contains the shattered remains of a desk and some chairs. You quickly discover that all sound is muted here.
Thirteen points to where a human's ears would be and shrugs at Max before walking out of the room.
Once out of the room Thirteen shouts to the others, "We've found a great place to put Virjor for a few hours!!"
Whilst looking around the room Virjor hears Thirteen's joke, blanches in surprise and barks in laughter. "Well played Sir! You are deft with the word as well as the sword it would seem!"

Thirteen follows Max down the hole after slapping Virjor on the back and attempting a laugh that comes out more like a coughing fit.
He swings his torch towards the door. Looking for anything out of the ordinary. Any markings etc.
