Ability Score lncrease. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1. Size. Half-orcs are somewhat larger and bulkier than humans, and they range from 5 to well over 6 feet tall. Your size is Medium. Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Darkvision. Thanks to your orc blood. you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim tight within 60 feet of you as if it were bright lght. and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Menacing. You gain proficieney in the Intimidation skill. Relentless Endurance. When you are reduced to 0 hit points but not killed outright. you can drop to 1 hit point instead. Vou can't use this feature again until you finish a long rest. Savage Attacks. When you score a criticaI hit with a melee weapon attack, you can roll one of the weapon's damage dice one additional time and add it lo the extra damage of lhe criticaI hit. Languages. You can speak read, and write Common and Orc.
So an half-orc with a custom lineage can choose all these following modifications (is it right ?) :
- One ability score of your choice increases by 2 instead "Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1."
- feat and variable instead "relentless endurance" and "savage attacks"
Or it's an error and all the half orc traits removed and replaced by custom lineage traits ?
Thanks for your future answer.
Notes: Please do not post non-srd rules in their entirety
It should be quite obvious from the first sentence of CL: "Instead of choosing one of the game's races for your character at 1st level, you can use the following traits to represent your character's lineage, giving you full control over how your character's origin shaped them" (Emphasis mine".
If you play a ruleswise half-orc you aren't playing a custom lineage and thus get none of the benefits or features of custom lineage. You are either a half-orc using the half-orc's features or you are a custom lineage using those features. No mixing and matching.
Custom lineage is not a variant rule for existing races. You treat it as its own race and it gets only it's listed traits, then you can name and describe it however you want.
Customizing Your Origin and Custom Lineage are two completely separate things and do not overlap.
Customizing your origin is where you pick a race from a sourcebook and can then move around ability score modifiers, swap out proficiencies and languages.
Custom Lineage is its own race and gains no benefit from any sourcebook race. And only gets
CUSTOM LINEAGE
Instead of choosing one of the game’s races for your character at 1st level, you can use the following traits to represent your character’s lineage, giving you full control over how your character’s origin shaped them:
Creature Type. You are a humanoid. You determine your appearance and whether you resemble any of your kin.
Size. You are Small or Medium (your choice).
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Ability Score Increase. One ability score of your choice increases by 2.
Feat. You gain one feat of your choice for which you qualify.
Variable Trait. You gain one of the following options of your choice: (a) darkvision with a range of 60 feet or (b) proficiency in one skill of your choice.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language that you and your DM agree is appropriate for your character.
Per Jeremy Crawford Custom Lineage does not allow you to use any racial feats as you are not one of those races.
Unless there is something from WotC to the contrary, Custom Lineage is no more human than any other race. It does not specify a race. As I see it, you can still be a [enter race here] and just have different mechanical traits than the typical example. It is effectively a universal subrace/ethnicity that applies to all races, just like "wood" or "aquatic" is a subrace/ethnicity of elf, Custom Lineage just adds another option. Example, I have a character that is the twin of my wife's character. She selected Eladrin and the associated traits. I selected Custom Lineage, but I am still a Eladrin. There is no race known as "Custom Lineage."

Your homebrew is fine and doesn't really affect gameplay, but it is homebrew. Custom Lineages are not subraces and aren't related to the other races. The people in this thread referred to them as "Variant humans with darkvision" a year ago because they function, mechanically, like humans with darkvision - there is nothing really special about them besides getting a Feat, like the variant human. You aren't an Eladrin for any purposes that matter, you're a race known as Custom Lineage.
"Your race is considered to be a Custom Lineage for any game feature that requires a certain race, such as elf or dwarf."
How we use Custom Lineage in our game circle is that mechanically speaking they aren't considered any specific race for prerequisits purposes to qualify as such, but story wise in game they can trace their lineage to one of the known races.
I am as much an Eladrin as a 3rd generation Britain still considers themselves Indian. My character looks like an Eladrin, comes from an Eladrin culture, has Eladrin parents and a twin Eladrin sister. For all intents and purposed other than starting mechanical benefits, he is an Eladrin. There is no such "race" as custom lineage. It is nothing more than a gaming convenience to allow players to have non-standard racial traits, especially for the older races that didn't originally benefit from variable trait packages or alternate subraces. For example, saying that all goliath have a +2 to Strength is no different than saying that all male characters should get a +2 to Strength because they are stronger than their female counterparts, and NO ONE is suggesting that we do that. Custom Lineage is really just a stop-gap until we get more dynamic/customizable racial build rules in the next evolution of D&D. It represents the normal variations that would manifest in any race.

Except that a "Custom Lineage" is NOT eligible for specific racial feats that require a human, half orc, elf or gnome for example. A custom lineage is NONE of the above. So a Custom Lineage that looks like an Eladrin, grew up as an Eladrin, thinks like an Eladrin is not, RAW, able to take Elven Accuracy as a feat. It is one of the downsides to the Custom Lineage race - they are mechanically NOT a member of the race that they are most closely related to.
I usually use Custom Lineage for characters who might be a mutant (a gnome starting with the telekinetic feat but they have 30' of movement and can move things with their mind and although they are a gnome narratively, they are not a gnome mechanically), or ones who comes from unusual parentage or might have been created in a lab.
A DM can always change the rule and allow a Custom Lineage character to be eligible for racial feats but RAW, a Custom Lineage, is a distinct racial group for whatever reason. It could be a single specimen or a an unusual race with many members.

Everything you said is basically true in just about every aspect of the game Except if you want something that has a race requirement of being an elf. Unlike your sister, who would qualify, you do not.
And it is more than just a convenience to have alternative stats. You could be the son or daughter of a dwarven father and gnomish mother. Or Goliath mother and kobold father. Or you could be a descendant of a planar being and as an infant dropped off on your game world from another plane. Or a cyborg that somehow got transported to your world. It leaves creativity open to players with DM permission to be something that might not be in the rules.
Hello, I have a question about custom lineage.
[REDACTED]
For example, with an half-orc :

Basically, custom lineage is "Human Variant that can get Darkvision instead of a skill."
I think of it as "We gave away Darkvision to everyone except Human, lets give it to them."
