Sorry if this was posted somewhere already, I couldn't find it when I searched.
I am the DM for a homebrew campaign using a combination of the gods of Theros and traditional greek gods. I want to use the piety points system in the MOoT as part of the campaign. I feel pretty comfortable making a list for devotee, disciple etc for the traditional greek gods that I need (Ex: Hades who isn't in MOoT). My question is, what is the easiest/simplest way to use this system in the game?
My plan was to have the list of what can make a character earn or lose piety for that patron and the list of the different piety traits based on the number of points they gain written in the notes section for their character as reference. For the actual points, do I just have them keep a running list in their notes like "hey you did some really in depth planning before trying to raid the den thieves so as a follower of Keranos, you get 1 piety point"? Then just have them make a note that has the point, the date, and the reason it was granted in a list with a total number of points at the top? (I record my sessions and relisten to them so that way if I caught an opportunity to give them a point on a relisten that I missed during play I would remember what I already awarded a point for)
And then when they reach the level of devotee, votary, disciple, or champion my plan was to attempt to make a home brew feat that would allow them the spell or stat boost awarded at that level (ex: Mogis's Votary feat would allow the character to cast blinding smite once per long rest using CON for spell casting). Also, if I make a feat, do I make 1 feat per deity with 4 options (devotee, votary, disciple, and champion) or a separate feat for each (Keranos devotee, Keranos votary, Keranos disciple, Keranos Champion)?
Is there a better way to do this? Is there already a way dnd beyond has worked this out to use w. character sheets? (no sense reinventing the wheel).
How you reward and track points is up to you (the DM).
There is not currently a system for granting the benefits of different ranks, so homebrew feats or items are probably easiest. It is something they are currently working on (an objective for this year, I think, but I've been wrong before).
