I'm new here and this is my first time playing this class. I feel like I've gotten a decent grasp so far, I'm just not sure about the unarmed strikes/attack. My character is level 3 and anytime I attack I've only been making 1 unarmed strike and then 1 bonus action unarmed strike for a total of two attacks. A few places I've seen on reddit or elsewhere, mention that a blood hunter gets 2 attacks (unarmed strikes), and then a bonus action (1 additional unarmed strike). So I'm just not sure what is correct. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
I’m unfamiliar with that classes features, but a second attack is usually gained with the attack action at level 5 when the extra attack feature is unlocked on most martial characters. There are a few melee oriented subclasses of primary casters that unlock the feature at level 6.
Blood Hunter gets extra attack at 5th level, the bonus action hybrid form grants you a unarmed strike from the blood hunters claw attacks using that action so its separate from the extra attack and a feature from the Hybrid Form itself. So you are correct, however you gain your extra attack at 5th level.
I take it you are an Order of the Lycan Blood Hunter. At level 3 using your Action to take the Attack Action to make one Unarmed Strike followed by using your Bonus Action to make a second Unarmed Strike is correct. The reason you see online people talking about making two attacks with their Attack Action is because at 5th level Blood Hunters gain the feature Extra Attack. This allows you to make an additional attack as part of the Attack Action. The attacks can be made with the same weapon or a different weapon or be used to make Shove or Grapple attempts.
What our Blood Hunter frequently does is wield a longsword in one hand. When he takes the attack action, he gets two attacks. He makes an attack with his longsword and an unarmed attack with his claw, which lets him follow up with a bonus action attack with his claw. I hope that helps explain the interaction between the two features.
Awesome, thank you for the help. I have another question if you don't mind as well. In bloodlust, do I only attack enemies or are friendlies at risk as well?
Friendlies are at risk as well. You target whoever the nearest creature is, regardless of if it is a friend or for. You do however get to choose whether or not to use your Extra Attack feature. Also after you attack you get to do whatever you want with your bonus action.
So if you do attack a friendly you can choose to take a single swing at them with whatever you think will do the least damage. But if it is an enemy you can go all out on them.
