So I understand that RAW says that "any creature", but what if someone wanted to play a grappler spell caster that grabs them, and then casts HOH on themselves. Is there a way to avoid the damage on the caster to make this a viable niche tech?
In general, tearing a rift through the fabric of reality into the dark vacuum of space is going to affect everyone and everything in range of it, whether or not they were the one who caused it to happen. You may want to look into a different Warlock spell that affects "creatures within X feet of you" instead of "within X feet of a point you target within range."

Like temery2383 mentions you would need to look for other means of acquiring the relevant damage resistances it immunities.
Hunger of Hadar targets a point in space and affects all creatures within 20ft of the targeted point. Being the caster or allied with the caster affords you no special protection from the spells effect.
If you want to force a creature to stay in the effect then the simplest combo is have an ally cast Entangle and then follow it up with Hunger of Hadar.
You can always cast the spell at a point 20 feet away and hold the grappled creature at the edge of the effect. This also works with create bonfire and cloud of daggers at lower levels.

Immunity to cold and acid. Otherwise it'll still hit them if they're in it.
