Hey guys! I have a player that is a Warforged (game is in eberron) Warlock of the Fiend Pact of the Blade. He is level 11 and has the Improved Pact Blade invocation (UA) plus a Belt of Hill Giant Strength (I'm a good DM!) so his melee weapon attack is +11 to hit. His Charisma on the other hand is 14, so his to hit with Spell Attacks is +6.
So, here is the problem: the cantrip Booming Blade states that when you hit with a melee weapon attack you deal X amount of damage, but witch to hit bonus to use? His to hit with spell attacks or his to hit with melee weapon attack or, if when he hits with his melee weapon attack he then have to hit with his to hit with spell attack (this last option I think isn't right)?
I tend to think that, even though he is casting a spell, the Somatic aspect of it is hitting with a melee weapon attack so, I'm inclined to use his normal to hit with melee attack
(btw, and I thought that "to hit Armor Class 0" was had to write)
Booming blade, and greenflame blade, both tell you to make a melee attack with a weapon - they don't tell you to make a melee spell attack but deal your weapon damage.
That means you use whatever bonus you would use if you were making a melee attack with the weapon you are using without having cast a spell. So in your specific example, the character would use the +11 bonus on the attack roll.
Also, I don't know who manages this stuff yet or where to report it, but Booming Blade is NOT in the D&D Beyond Spell Compendium here. Maybe as this was in SCAG and not the PHB?
But the exact wording is:
"As part of the action used to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell's range, otherwise the spell fails."
So I agree, use the melee attackk bonus, not the spell

Yes, it was in the SCAG and isn't in the SRD so it's not supposed to be in the spell compendium here.
Sorry, didn't think in the rules discussion we were also restricted to SRD material, if it is against terms of conduct, please I will gladly remove (or ask to be removed) this thread.

Oh man, I just meant I wanted to report that the spell wasn't available, not report any conduct at all!
