Is the suggestion spell, just a stronger version of command? In battle could I tell an enemy to drop their weapon, walk away, and lie down? Is this not how the spell works?
Command has to be a one word order, while Suggestion can be a couple of sentences.
Also, the durations are quite different. Command is one round, while Suggestion can be up to 8 hours. Additionally, Suggestion can have a trigger built into, allowing for a lot more variety in what can happen.
Command is more powerful but limited in scope. It does not count as a charm, which means fey ancestry and the likes do not protect against it. Once someone falls under the effects of command, they will use their turn doing exactly what you commanded them to, then promptly end their turn. Even if you and your companions are beating him to death, he will follow the command.
Suggestion is far more versatile in that you can set conditions/triggers that are "limited to a sentence or two". It is a charm and all the regular protections against charms works. If you suggest someone during combat with them, I would rule that it simply fail unless your suggestion is something that "sound reasonable" to them in the middle of battle, which means you won't be able to replicate the powerful effect of commanding someone to fall prone and end their turn using suggestion unless you get really clever with a lenient DM. The effect also immediately ends if you or your companions damage the suggested target.
Overall, suggestion is more for doing clever things outside of combat, jedi mind trick-esque, while command is forcing someone to obey you absolutely for a brief period of time.

Suggestion doesn't apply the charmed condition on its target. Being immune to the charmed condition protects against Suggestion only because the spell says so. Fey Ancestry doesn't apply, since the spell doesn't charm the target.
For the sake of clarity, there's nothing in the rules called "a charm" or "charm effect".
