@up2ng I don’t understand how you can subtract a die from a die roll in the case where no die is rolled at all.
Ray of Enfeeblement: "On a failed save, the target has Disadvantage on Strength-based D20 Tests for the duration. During that time, it also subtracts 1d8 from all its damage rolls."
Definition of Damage Roll: "A damage roll is a die roll, adjusted by any applicable modifiers, that deals damage to a target."
Meh, after reviewing the wording for the various rules that are sprinkled throughout the new PHB, I'm changing my mind about this. The terms Attack Roll and Damage Roll are not just terms for the general procedures that are used to resolve particular activities (such as making an attack) -- these particular procedures are actually only used when the outcome is uncertain. So, in 2024, although the term "Damage Roll" can refer to rolling more than one dice (contrary to the Glossary entry, which should be changed), it doesn't refer to resolving damage that involves rolling less than one die.
Carry on.
