I'm starting a new campaign in January with a group of two old friends and three friends of theirs. I decided to start at level 3 and stick to the 2024 rules as much as possible. We did a Session Zero and I gave everyone a week to come up with character ideas. Because they're starting at level 3, I told everyone that they could pick a Common or Uncommon Magic Item to start with.
Lo and behold, the Barbarian picks an Adamantine Weapon. This was a new one to me but it's in the 2024 DMG as an Uncommon item that ALWAYS crits. According to the Crafting rules, one of these can be made (with the proper skills and spells) for 200 gp in ten days. The suggested value of Uncommon items is 400 gp.
Um...did ANYONE playtest this? "Whenever this weapon or piece of ammunition hits an object, the hit is a Critical Hit."
Is this a weapon designed to wreck objects only or are enemies considered to be 'objects' now?
I want to thank you all for sparing me a panic attack before my game even starts. I'm made a valiant effort to read through everything in the 2024 rules but it's a bit overwhelming to try and disseminate between the old and the new.

Hope you bring this up to the barbarian player. They may have been thinking the same thing and might have picked something different if they knew it is only objects. Don’t need to start off the campaign with a player salty because they are stuck starting off with a weapon that isn’t doing what they thought it did.
Our campaign starts on Jan 7th and I mentioned this to the whole party last night. The Barb player in question shrugged and asked that I suggest something else. Again, thanks to everyone who chimed in.

Since you let them pick whatever uncommon they'd like ... Winged Boots can often be a great choice from a player perspective if not a DMs point of view but in this case since you gave them free reign with no restrictions it might be a good choice to suggest (and odds are good someone else might have picked them already).
Winged Boots avoid difficult terrain, help deal with flying opponents, bypass pits, traps and other terrain challenges, enable easier and safer exploration since climbing and athletics checks are no longer an issue ... etc
In comparison, a +1 weapon might seem lackluster in my opinion :)
P.S. Since the player was interested in you suggesting something else ... does he want to switch because he also thought that it would automatically crit against creatures?

yes, along with 7 years of the rule being in game so its been tested by probably a few million people when you add up all those games...that rule is in XGE, its not new for 2024.

Only objects, no creatures.
There was a recent debate here about the same topic: Adamantine and Silver Weapons, 2024 - Rules & Game Mechanics
Yea the word "object" is clearly defined in the rules so no auto-critting v creatures.
