Unfortunately, my character in my Drakkenheim game perished recently and I’m tasked with creating a new character. We’re still playing the 2014 rules. I’ve decided that I want to play a beastmaster Ranger playing a gnome or maybe a halfling and using the beast of the land.
I thought it would be really cool to have a mounted combatant and I really want to utilize the charge feature of the beast of the land. Because the beast of the land attack modifier runs off of your wisdom, I figured the best way to make an optimized character would be to take druidic warrior fighting style and shillelagh. My character will be level five and we get a free feat.
I plan to play a gnome and plan on taking crusher as my free feat. the idea is, at the start of combat, I will use my bonus action to cast shillelagh and mount my beast companion. I will then have the beast charge an opponent that is over 20 feet away and sacrifice one of my attacks for the beast to attack hopefully knocking the enemy prone. My next club attack will be at advantage as the enemy is prone and if it hits crusher will knock it 5 feet away and I use the rest of the beast speed to retreat.
If the enemy doesn’t follow, I repeat the next turn except with two attacks for me and one for the beast, rinse and repeat. If they do follow and are within 5 feet, I have the beast attack as a bonus action, and then I attack twice, hitting and knocking them away with the second feat so I can retreat with the beast’s 40 ft move speed and charge on my next turn if the enemy has 30ft of movement and can’t reach me or my beast.
Something you should take note of before you get any farther is that the "Beast of the Land" thing is part of the 2024 version of the Beast Master subclass. If your group is using the 2014 rules, they may expect you to use the 2014 version of that subclass (and the 2014 version of the Ranger class).
